  • Methods for measuring surface roughness based on light reflectivity have advantages over methods based on light interference or diffraction, especially in in-situ, on-the-machine and in-process applications. However, measurement inconsistencies caused by changes in the specimen are still a drawback for field applications. In this study, we propose a new feedback-based algorithm to enhance the consistency against changes in the specimen. The algorithm is deduced from simulations based on light reflectance theory with typical modeled surfaces. The proposed method is similar to a digital controller and regulates the power of reflected light. Experiments varying heights and materials, verified the improvements in robustness of the method against measurement disturbances caused by specimen changes.

  • In the last few years, The Semantic Web has increased the interest in ontologies. Ontology is an essential component of the semantic web. Ontologies continue to change and evolve. We consider the management of versions in ontology. We study a set of changes based on domain changes, changes in conceptualization, metadata changes, and temporal dimension. In many cases, we want to be able to search in historical versions, query changes in versions, retrieve versions on the temporal dimension. In order to support an ontology query language that supports temporal operations, we consider temporal dimension includes transaction time and valid time. Ontology versioning brings about massive amount of versions to be stored and maintained. We present the storage policies that are storing all the versions, all the sequence of changed element, all the change sets, the aggregation of change sets periodically, and the aggregation of change sets using a criterion. We conduct a set of experiments to compare the performance of each storage policies. We present the experimental results for evaluating the performance of different storage policies from scheme 1 to scheme 5.

  • Copper pipes have been widely used as components of System Air-Conditioner due to high thermal conductivity. This system consists of 150 pipes, which are approximately 10m long in total. Dimensional changes occur during pipe processing such as expansion, reduction and bending. This processing induces changes in length of pipes and makes dimensional differences from original pipes. The summation of the differences of pipes components leads to make huge cumulative dimensional differences. The cumulative differences can cause serious problems such as crack, refrigerant leakage. However the differences have not been considered so far. To satisfy target quality of the system, it is essential to predict and calibrate the differences. In this paper, the changes in dimension were predicted using FEM and it was found that cumulative differences could cause indesirable stress during assembly process. As a result, dimensional differences or indesirable stress could be reduced using the proposed method.

  • Mechanical and thermal properties of composite sandwich wall panels are affected by changes in their external environment. Humidity and temperature changes induce stress on wall panels and their core connectors. Under the action of ambient temperature, temperature on the outer layer of the wall panel changes greatly, while that on the inner layer only changes slightly. As a result, stress concentration exists at the intersection of the connector and the wall blade. In this paper, temperature field and stress field distribution of UHPC-RW-RC (Ultra-High Performance Concrete - Rock Wool - Reinforced Concrete) wall panel under high temperature-sprinkling and heating-freezing conditions were investigated by using the general finite element software ABAQUS. Additionally, design of the connection between the wall panel and the main structure is proposed. Findings may serve as a scientific reference for design of high performance composite sandwich wall panels.

  • Automotive occupant packaging has been a part of main ergonomics interests, especially, in terms of driver's posture. Previous research on driver's posture has mainly focused on the initial optimal posture for driving sedans. However, customer preferences on cars are shifting from sedans to RV and automobile manufacturing companies seek to understand temporal changes in drivers' posture according to driving environment. So the main aim of this study was to develop a driver's posture measurement system during driving and investigate casual changes due to duration, car type, traffic flow. Four male drivers participated in the experiments during one week. It was shown that considerable changes in their postures were caused with respect to driving environment, which implies that not only static optimal postures but their dynamic changes should be taken into consideration for proper design and evaluation of interior packaging. The research is expected to help packaging designers understand human drivers so as to improve their comfort.

  • Polymers are the most commonly used di-electrics because of their reliability, availability, ease of fabrication and cost. The commercial and industrial demand for advanced polymeric materials which are capable of being used in harsh environment is need of the hour. The study of the effect of electron beam irradiation on polymeric materials is an area of rapidly increasing interest. This paper discusses the resultant beneficial effects of electron beam irradiation on the SiR-EPDM blend having 50:50 composition. The changes in mechanical and electrical properties of SiR-EPDM blend which are exposed to three different doses of electron beam radiation namely 5 Mrad, 15 Mrad and 25 Mrad are presented. The irradiated blends are analyzed for their electro-mechanical and physico chemical properties. The electrical changes induced by irradiation are investigated by arc resistance, surface resistivity and volume resistivity measurements as per ASTM standards. The mechanical changes are observed by the measurement of tensile strength and elongation at break. Physico chemical investigation has been done using the FTIR, in order to investigate the irradiation induced chemical changes.

  • In this paper, a vibration-based method using the change ratios of modal data and the experience-based learning algorithm is presented for quantifying the position, size, and interface layer of delamination in laminated composites. Three types of objective functions are examined and compared, including the ones using frequency changes only, mode shape changes only, and their combination. A fine three-dimensional FE model with constraint equations is utilized to extract modal data. A series of numerical experiments is carried out on an eight-layer quasi-isotropic symmetric (0/-45/45/90)s composited beam for investigating the influence of the objective function, the number of modal data, the noise level, and the optimization algorithms. Numerical results confirm that the frequency-and-mode-shape-changes-based technique yields excellent results in all the three delamination variables of the composites and the addition of mode shape information greatly improves the accuracy of interface layer prediction. Moreover, the EBL outperforms the other three state-of-the-art optimization algorithms for vibration-based delamination detection of composites. A laboratory test on six CFRP beams validates the frequency-and-mode-shape-changes-based technique and confirms again its superiority for delamination detection of composites.

  • In this study, the relationship between morphology and viscosity of the main culture broth of Cephalosporium acremonium M25 was investigated in a 2.5 L bioreactor. The differentiation of C. acremonium M25 showed a complex pattern during the main culture. The morphological changes of C. acremonium M25 were related to the rheological properties of the culture broth and it was well agreed with the power law model. As a result of rheology study, it was found that rheological properties of the main culture broths of C. acremonium M25 in bioreactor were closely related to morphological changes. Also, fractal dimension fairly predicted morphological and rheological changes in the main culture broth.

  • This paper presents a model-based image steganography method based on Watson's visual model. Model-based steganography assumes a model for cover image statistics. This approach, however, has some weaknesses, including perceptual detectability. We propose to use Watson's visual model to improve perceptual undetectability of model-based steganography. The proposed method prevents visually perceptible changes during embedding. First, the maximum acceptable change in each discrete cosine transform coefficient is extracted based on Watson's visual model. Then, a model is fitted to a low-precision histogram of such coefficients and the message bits are encoded to this model. Finally, the encoded message bits are embedded in those coefficients whose maximum possible changes are visually imperceptible. Experimental results show that changes resulting from the proposed method are perceptually undetectable, whereas model-based steganography retains perceptually detectable changes. This perceptual undetectability is achieved while the perceptual quality - based on the structural similarity measure - and the security - based on two steganalysis methods - do not show any significant changes.
