  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of group music therapy involving the creation of a musical play on the self-esteem, self-expression, and social skills of children. The participants were 14 first through third graders and 14 fourth through sixth graders from a children's center. Half of the children from each grade band (Grades 1-3 and 4-6) were assigned to the experimental group and the other half to the control group, for a total of 14 children in each group. The experimental group who participated in music therapy sessions focused on creating a musical play. The experimental group selected themes, made a script, composed song lyrics and music, and performed the completed musical play. The Self-Esteem Scale, Self-Expression Scale, and Social Skills Rating System (SSRS) were administered before and after the intervention. The experimental group exhibited significantly higher scores than the control group on all of the scales except subscales of the Self-Expression scale and the SSRS. The results of this study suggest that group music therapy can facilitate children's engagement in group work and that playing an important role in the group can positively impact their perceptions of themselves.

  • This paper provides an overview of political ecology, a body of theory that focuses on the links between political and economic inequality on the one hand, and environmental degradation on the other. Adopting a tripartite classification scheme that identifies three political ecology traditions -'classical', 'democratic' and 'poststructuralist'- the discussion shows the need for a move within the poststructuralist tradition away from a narrow and quasi-idealistic focus on discourse to a more robust philosophical engagement with ontological and epistemological issues grounded in Gilles Deleuze's development of Nietzschean materialism. From there. the author draws on numerous examples from Canada, and surveys the available literature on 'bioregionalism', a relatively new intellectual tradition evolved from the North American environmental social movements of the 1970s and 1980s. The so-called 'bioregional approach' stresses that administrative units need to reflect (rather than transect) eco-geographical and cultural features. Bioregionalism is described and assessed as a potential pragmatic research framework for geographers and other planners wishing to respond proactively to the call for a revamped, poststructuralist political ecology. The paper concludes that a bioregional approach to political ecology avoids the weaknesses identified by certain critics, provides scope for consideration of fundamental philosophical ideas, and as such, represents a practical development of a poststructuralist political ecology.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare immediate differences in fatigue and motor performance during instrumental playing in patients with chronic stroke depending on whether singing task was concurrently presented. A total of 12 patients with chronic stroke were recruited from community and daycare centers for older adults in Seoul. Six subjects were randomly assigned to the experimental group and six to the comparison group. The experimental group was asked to sing while playing the electronic drum, and the comparison group only played the drum. The results of this study showed that statistically significant differences in perceived fatigue and exertion were found between the two groups, while no significant group differences were found in level of engagement in playing or force of tapping during drum playing. This study supports the inclusion of a singing task in instrument playing rehabilitation to effectively decrease perceived fatigue and level of intensity of exercises, although this may not lead to immediate changes in motor function or level of target exercises. The results indicate that singing while instrument playing may help stroke patients shift their attention from the executed motor movements to singing and alleviate the attentional and emotional load from intense movements. This study presents implications for how to select and pattern target movements in music therapy intervention for better motor outcomes.

  • Smoke grenades are the primary means of protection used by tanks to disrupt enemy detection systems. Such smoke grenades are a critical factor that determines the survival of tanks in the engagement of ground weapon systems, but it can only be used once. Owing to its destructive property, the performance and safety of the smoke grenade cannot be confirmed prior to use. Therefore, the reliability of smoke grenades can be evaluated through various tests during the storage period. This paper presents the results of estimating the reliability and shelf life of IR screening smoke grenade launchers based on the result of the Ammunition Stockpile Reliability Program conducted in 2019. Among the smoke grenade launcher lots currently stored, 16 lots and samples were selected for each year of manufacture and tested. The reliability and shelf life were estimated by examining the number of defects and the change in quality characteristics of each test item. The results of this study can be used to assess the reliability of the smoke grenade launchers and to improve the quality of manufacturing sites.
