  • The tailored surface modification of electrode materials is crucial to realize the wanted electronic and electrochemical properties. In this regard, a dexterous carbon encapsulation technique can be one of the most essential preparation methods for the electrode materials for lithium rechargeable batteries. For this purpose, DL-malic acid ($C_4H_6O_5$) was here used as the carbon source enabling an amorphous carbon layer to be formed on the surface of Si nanoparticles at enough low temperature to maintain their own physical or chemical properties. Various structural characterizations proved that the bulk structure of Si doesn't undergo any discernible change except for the evolution of C-C bond attributed to the formed carbon layer on the surface of Si. The improved electrochemical performance of the carbon-encapsulated Si compared to Si can be attributed to the enhanced electrical conductivity by the surface carbon layer as well as its role as a buffering agent to absorb the volume expansion of Si during lithiation and delithiation.

  • The silver nanofluids were synthesized by the pulsed wire evaporation (PWE) method in a liquid-gas mixture. The size and microstructure of nanoparticles in the deionized water were investigated by a particle size analyzer (PSA), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Also, the synthesized nanofluids were investigated in order to assess the stability of dispersion of nanofluid by the zetapotential analyzer and dispersion stability analyzer. The results showed that the spherical silver nanoparticle formed in the deionized water and mean particle size was about 50 nm. Also, when explosion times were in the range of 20$\sim$200 times, the absolute value of zeta potential was less than -27 mV and the dispersion stability characteristic of low concentration silver nanofluid was better than the high concentration silver nanofluid by turbiscan.

  • This article presents the challenges toward the successful consolidation of $Al_2O_3$ nanopowder using magnetic pulsed compaction (MPC). In this research the ultrafine-structured $Al_2O_3$ bulks have been fabricated by the combined application of magnetic pulsed compaction (MPC) and subsequent sintering, and their properties were investigated. The obtained density of $Al_2O_3$ bulk prepared by the combined processes was increased with increasing MPC pressure from 0.5 to 1.25 GPa. Relatively higher hardness and fracture toughness in the MPCed specimen at 1.25 GPa were attributed to the retention of the nanostructure in the consolidated bulk without cracks. The higher fracture toughness could be attributed to the crack deflection by homogeneous distribution and the retention of nanostructure, regardless of the presence of porosities. In addition, the as consolidated $Al_2O_3$ bulk using magnetic pulsed compaction showed enhanced breakdown voltage.

  • In this study, flow analysis and fluid-solid interaction analysis were conducted on a hollow fiber membrane module used for analysis of dehumidification characteristics. To ensure the reliability of the flow analysis results, the dehumidification experiment was performed under the temperature of 30℃ and relative humidity of 30% RH. The results of the dehumidification experiments were compared with the flow analysis results. The results of dehumidification experiments and flow analysis had a difference of approximately 5%. A 1-Way fluid-solid interaction analysis with various materials was conducted. From the results, it was found that the baffle with the largest shape deformation (polyethylene material) was subjected to 2-way fluid-solid interaction. The analysis of fluid flow and dehumidification characteristics were analyzed according to the shape deformation of the baffle.

  • The sealed nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) secondary battery are primarily used as energy storage for the HEV. But, the research on Ni-MH battery has focused on anode materials. In the present study, we investigate to improve the electrochemical characteristics of Ni-MH batteries using the surface treatment of $Ni(OH)_2$ cathode by CoOOH. Surface treated $Ni(OH)_2$ cathode showed significant improvement in the activation behavior, rate capability, charge retention, and cycle life of the batteries were significantly improved. In addition, the surface treated electrode exhibited the higher overvoltage for oxygen evolution than the untreated electrode. This phenomenon indicates that the charge efficiency can be improved by suppressing the oxygen evolution on cathode.

  • The energy transfer from photoexcited polyvinylcarbazole (PVK) chromophores with a bandgap of 3.7 eV as a donor to fluorophores of poly(dihexylfluorenevinylene) (PDHFV) or poly(dihexylfluorenedihexoxyphenylenevinylene) (PDHFHPV) as an acceptor in bilayered specimens should be carried out since the spectral overlap pairs fulfills the requirement for the $F{\"{o}}rster-type$ condition. However, the energy transfer rate from the chromophores with a wider bandgap to the fluorophores with a narrower bandgap is proved to be strongly dependent on the lifetime ratio between the excitons.

  • In electronics manufacturing processes, soldering process has generally been used in surface mounting technology. Because of environmental restriction, lead free solders as like a SnAgCu ternary system are being used widely. After soldering process, the formation and growth of intermetalic compounds(IMCs) are formed in the interface between solder and Cu substrate as follows isothermal temperature and time. In this studies, therefore, we investigated the effects of the Cu substrate thickness on the IMC formation and growth of Sn-40Pb/Cu and Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu/Cu solder joints, respectively. The effect of the Cu thickness in PCB Cu pad and pure Cu plate was analyzed as measuring of thickness of each IMC. After solder was soldered on PCB and Cu plate which have different Cu thickness, we measured the IMC thickness in solder joints respectively. Also we compared with the effectiveness of Cu thickness on the IMC growth. From these results, we calculated the activation energy.

  • The effects of fast neutron irradiation on the electrical and optical properties of Li (3 at%) doped ZnSnO (ZTO) thin films fabricated using a sol-gel process are investigated. From the results of Li-ZTO TFT characteristics according to change of neutron irradiation time, the saturation mobility is found to increase and threshold voltage values shift to a negative direction from 1,000 s neutron irradiation time. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis of the O 1s core level shows that the relative area of oxygen vacancies is almost unchanged with different irradiation times. From the results of band alignment, it is confirmed that, due to the increase of electron carrier concentration, the Fermi level (EF) of the sample irradiated for 1,000 s is located at the position closest to the conduction band minimum. The increase in electron concentration is considered by looking at the shallow band edge state under the conduction band edge formed by fast neutron irradiation of more than 1,000 s.

  • The magnetocaloric effect (MCE), which is the reversible temperature change of magnetic materials due to an applied magnetic field, occurs largely in the vicinity of the magnetic phase transition temperature. This phenomenon can be used to induce magnetic refrigeration, a viable, energy-efficient solid-state cooling technology. Recently, Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), due to their structural diversity of tunable crystalline pore structure and chemical functionality, have been studied as good candidates for magnetic refrigeration materials in the cryogenic region. In cryogenic cooling applications, MCE using MOF can have great potential, and is even considered comparable to conventional lanthanum alloys and magnetic nanoparticles. Owing to the presence of large internal pores, however, MOF also exhibits the drawback of low magnetic density. To overcome this problem, therefore, recent reports in literature that achieve high magnetic entropy change using a dense structure formation and ligand tuning are introduced.

  • Surface composite layers of 1.9~2.9 mm in thickness were fabricated by depositing metamorphic powders on a carbon steel substrate and by irradiating with a high-energy electron beam. In the surface composite layers, 48~64 vol.% of $Cr_{2}B$ or $Cr_{1.65}Fe_{0.35}B_{0.96}$ borides were densely precipitated in the austenite or martensite matrix. These hard borides improved the hardness of the surface composite layer. According to the otentiodynamic polarization test results of the surface composites, coatings, STS304 stainless steel, and carbon steel substrate, the corrosion potential of the surface composite fabricated with 'C+' powders was highest, and its corrosion current density was lowest, while its pitting potential was similar to that of the STS304 steel. This indicated that the overall corrosion resistance of the surface composite fabricated with 'C+' powders was the best among the tested materials. Austenite and martensite phases of the surface composites and coatings was selectively corroded, while borides were retained inside pits. In the coating fabricated with 'C+' powders, the localized corrosion additionally occurred along splat boundaries, and thus the corrosion resistance of the coating was worse than that of the surface composite.
