  • Building energy saving is one of the most important issues in these days. Control algorithm for energy saving should be designed properly to reduce power consumption in building. Recently, building energy system consists of hybrid energy system coupling with RE (Renewable Energy) source. In this paper, an optimum control algorithm for building energy saving is applied to BEMS (Building Energy Management System) by using an outdoor air temperature prediction strategy. BEMS coupling with renewable energy can control HVAC (Heating, Ventilating and Air-Conditioning) system effectively. In order to verify the effectiveness of building energy saving, BEMS was tested for several months at a laboratorial chamber with an air conditioner, fan and heater. To this end BEMS embedded control algorithm has been tested successfully.

  • Recently, the green business/IT-related issues such as $CO_2$ emission and energy consumption have become spread out rapidly through the world. EU, the United States, Japan and other developed countries are using IT-related environmental regulations as trade barriers. Korea which has high rate of IT exports needs to establish systematic strategies to respond to these environmental regulations. However, it is not easy to find the related research about making green business/IT strategies. This research aims to deduce the green business/IT strategy framework and the suitable green business/IT strategies for the Korean situation. The green business/IT strategy framework is constructed from the analysis of preceding researches and those of the green business/IT strategies of Japan, the United States, and EU. The Korean green business/IT strategies are deduced from survey of experts using Delphi method. We expect that the results contribute to establish the systematic policy and action plan to reduce $CO_2$ emission and energy consumption of IT industry.

  • Fuel economy is an important factor in a vehicle owing to recent energy supply and environmental problems. This paper deals with fuel cell hybrid vehicles (FCHVs) and introduces a fuel economy evaluation method. The fuel economy of an FCHV depends on its power management strategy. Two rule-based power management strategies are applied to this paper and their fuel economy is evaluated based on the optimal control theory. The concept of the optimal line is also applied to this paper, which is used to compare the fuel consumption of a power management strategy to the optimal result. The two rule-based strategies are also compared to each other.

  • This paper discusses decommissioning procedure requirements management using requirement engineering to systematically manage the technical requirements and criteria that are required in decontamination and decommissioning activities, and the regulatory requirements that should be complied with in a decommissioning strategy for research reactors and nuclear power plants. A schema was designed to establish the traceability and change management related to the linkage between the regulatory requirements and technical criteria after classifying the procedures into four groups during the full life-cycle of the decommissioning. The results confirmed that the designed schema was successfully traced in accordance with the regulatory requirements and technical criteria required by various fields in terms of decontamination and decommissioning activities. In addition, the changes before and after the revision of the Nuclear Safety Act were also determined. The dismantling procedure requirement management system secured through this study is expected to be a useful tool in the integrated management of radioactive waste, as well as in the dismantling of research reactor and nuclear facilities.

  • Following the Fukushima accident, portable equipment employed as accident mitigating systems have been installed and operated to reduce core damage and large early release frequencies. In addition, the establishment of an accident management strategy has gained importance. This study investigated the current status of portable equipment including the international portable equipment FLEX (diverse and flexible coping strategies), and domestic portable equipment multi-barrier accident coping strategy (MACST). Research on optimal utilization of MACST remains insufficient. As a preliminary study for establishing an optimal strategy, sensitivity studies were conducted to facilitate the priority of use on portable equipment, number of portable equipment, and dependency of operator actions based on a multi-unit probabilistic safety assessment model. The results revealed the conditions that reduced the multi-unit and site conditional core damage probabilities, indicating the optimal strategy of MACST. The results of this study can be used as a reference for establishing an optimal strategy that utilizes domestic safety equipment in the future.

  • The safe management of radioactive waste is a national task required for sustainable generation of nuclear power and for energy self-reliance in Korea. Since the initial introduction of nuclear power to Korea in 1978, rapid growth in nuclear power has been achieved. This large nuclear power generation program has produced a significant amount of radioactive waste, both low- and intermediate-level waste (LILW) and spent nuclear fuel (SNF); and the amount of waste is steadily growing. For the management of LILW, the Wolsong LILW Disposal Center, which has a final waste disposal capacity of 800,000 drums, is under construction, and is expected to be completed by June 2014. Korean policy about how to manage the SNF has not yet been decided. In 2004, the Atomic Energy Commission decided that a national policy for SNF management should be established considering both technological development and public consensus. Currently, SNF is being stored at reactor sites under the responsibility of plant operator. The at-reactor SNF storage capacity will run out starting in 2024. In this paper, the fundamental principles and steps for implementation of a Korean policy for national radioactive waste management are introduced. Korean practices and prospects regarding radioactive waste management are also summarized, with a focus on strategy for policy-making on SNF management.

  • The energy management technology for an independent fuel cell-battery hybrid system is developed for a household usage. To develop an efficient energy management technology, a simulation model is first developed. After the model is verified with experimental results, three energy management schemes are developed. Three control techniques are a fuzzy logic control (FLC), a state machine control (SMC), and a hybrid method of FLC and SMC. As the fuel cell-battery hybrid system is used for a house, battery state of charge (SOC) regulation is the most important factor for an energy management because SOC should be kept constant every day for continuous usage. Three management schemes are compared to see SOC, power split, and fuel cell power variations effects. Experimental results are also presented and the most favorable strategy is the state machine combined fuzzy control method.

  • A smart grid is a modernized electrical grid that uses information about the behaviors of suppliers and consumers in an automated fashion to improve the efficiency, reliability, economics, and sustainability of the production and distribution of electricity. In the operation of a smart grid, demand side management (DSM) plays an important role in allowing customers to make informed decisions regarding their energy consumption. In addition, it helps energy providers reduce peak load demand and reshapes the load profile. In this paper, we propose a new DSM scheduling scheme that makes use of the day-ahead pricing strategy. Based on the Rubinstein-Stahl bargaining model, our pricing strategy allows consumers to make informed decisions regarding their power consumption, while reducing the peak-to-average ratio. With a simulation study, it is demonstrated that the proposed scheme can increase the sustainability of a smart grid and reduce overall operational costs.
