The research efforts directed at advancing water electrolysis technology continue to intensify together with the increasing interest in hydrogen as an alternative source of energy to fossil fuels. Among the various water electrolysis systems reported to date, systems employing a solid polymer electrolyte membrane are known to display both improved safety and efficiency as a result of enhanced separation of products: hydrogen and oxygen. Conducting water electrolysis in an alkaline medium lowers the system cost by allowing non-platinum group metals to be used as catalysts for the complex multi-electron transfer reactions involved in water electrolysis, namely the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions (HER and OER, respectively). We briefly review the anion exchange membranes (AEMs) and electrocatalysts developed and applied thus far in alkaline AEM water electrolysis (AEMWE) devices. Testing the developed components in AEMWE cells is a key step in maximizing the device performance since cell performance depends strongly on the structure of the electrodes containing the HER and OER catalysts and the polymer membrane under specific cell operating conditions. In this review, we discuss the properties of reported AEMs that have been used to fabricate membrane-electrode assemblies for AEMWE cells, including membranes based on polysulfone, poly(2,6-dimethyl-p-phylene) oxide, polybenzimidazole, and inorganic composite materials. The activities and stabilities of tertiary metal oxides, metal carbon composites, and ultra-low Pt-loading electrodes toward OER and HER in AEMWE cells are also described.

The main objectives of this study are to investigate the micro-scale energy transfer mechanism for silicon wafer and to find an efficient way for fabrication of silicon wafer through-hole by using the femtosecond pulse laser ablation. In addition, the electron-phonon interactions during laser irradiation are discussed and the carrier number density and temperatures are estimated. In particular, the present study observes the shapes of silicon wafer through-hole with $100\;{\mu}m$ diameter and it also measures the heat-affected area and the ablation depths fur different laser fluences by using the optic microscope and the three-dimensional profile measurement technique. First, from numerical investigation, it is found that the nonequilibrium state exists between electrons and phonons during laser irradiation. From experimental results, it should be noted that the heat-affected area increases with laser fluence, and the optimal conditions for through-hole formation with minimum heat affected zone are finally obtained.
Photocatalysis is an environment friendly technique for degrading organic dyes in water. Tungsten oxide is becoming an active area of research in photocatalysis nanomaterials for having a smaller bandgap than the previously favored titanium dioxide. Synthesis of hierarchical structures, doping platinum (Pt), coupling with nanocomposites or other semiconductors are investigated as valid methods of improving the photocatalytic degradation efficiency. These impact the reaction by creating a redshift in the wavelength of light used, effecting charge transfer, and the formation/recombination of electron-hole pairs. Each of the methods mentioned above are investigated in terms of synthesis and photocatalytic efficiency, with the simplest being modification on the morphology of tungsten oxide, since it does not need synthesis of other materials, and the most efficient in photocatalytic degradation being complex coupling of metal oxides and carbon composites. The photocatalysis technology can be incorporated with water purification membrane by modularization process and applied to advanced water treatment system.
In order to screen the aging related proteins in human normal colon epithelia, the comparative proteomics analysis was applied to get the two-dimensional electrophoresis (2-DE) profiles with high resolution and reproducibility from normal colon epithelial tissues of young and aged people. Differential proteins between the colon epithelia of two age groups were found with PDQuest software. The thirty five differential protein-spots were identified by peptide mass fingerprint (PMF) based on matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOFMS) and database searching. Among them there are sixteen proteins which are significantly up-regulated in the colonic mucosal epithelia of young people group, which include ATP synthase beta chain, electron transfer flavoprotein alpha-subunit, catalase, glutathione peroxidase 1, annexin A2 and heat shock cognate 71 kDa protein, etc.; There are nineteen proteins which are significantly up-regulated in the colonic mucosal epithelia of aged people group, which include far upstream element-binding protein 1, nucleoside diphosphate kinase B, protein disulfide-isomerase precursor and VDAC-2, etc.. The identified differential proteins appear to be involved in metabolism, energy generation, chaperone, antioxidation, signal transduction, protein folding and apoptosis. The data will help to understand the molecular mechanisms of human colon epithelial aging.

A phosphor for Plasma Display Panel, BaMgAl$_{10}$ O$_{17}$ :Eu$^{2+}$, showing a blue emission band at about 450nm was prepared by a solid-state reaction using BaCO$_3$, $Al_2$O$_3$, MgO, Eu$_2$O$_3$ as starting materials wish flux AlF$_3$. The study of the behaviour of Eu in BAM phosphor was carried out by the photoluminescence spectra and the Rietveld method with X-ray and neutron powder diffraction data to refine the structural parameters such as lattice constants, the valence state of Eu, the preferential site of Mg atom and the site fraction of each atom. The phenomenon of the concentration quenching was abound 2.25~2.3wt% of Eu due to a decrease in the critical distance for energy transfer of inter-atomic Eu. Through the combined Rietveld refinement, R-factor, R$_{wp}$, was 8.11%, and the occupancy of Eu and Mg was 0.0882 and 0.526 at critical concentration. The critical distance of Eu$^{2+}$ in BAM was 18.8$\AA$ at 2.25% Eu of the concentration quenching. Furthermore, c/a ratio was decreased to 3.0wt% and no more change was observed over that concentration. The maximum entropy electron density was found that the modeling of $\beta$-alumina structure in BaMgAl$_{10}$ O$_{17}$ :Eu$^{2+}$correct coincided showing Ba, Eu, O atoms of z= 1/4 mirror plane.e.ane.e.

Ca1-xZrO3:xPr phosphor with perovskite structure was successfully synthesized by using skull melting method. The crystal structure, morphology and optical properties of synthesized phosphor were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), ultraviolet fluorescence reaction and photoluminescence. The XRD results indicated that single crystals of CaZrO3:Pr3+ belongs to orthorhombic perovskite system. The synthesized phosphor could be excited by UV light (254 nm) and the emission spectra results indicated that green luminescence of CaZrO3:Pr3+ due to charge transfer transition 3P0 → 3H4, 3P1 → 3H5 and 3P0 → 3H5 at 506, 536 and 548 nm was dominant.
Graphene has a large surface area to volume ratio and good mechanical and electrical property and biocompatibility. This study described the electrochemical deposition and reduction of graphene oxide on the surface of indium tin oxide (ITO) glass slide and electrochemical characterization of graphen-modified ITO. Cyclic voltammetry was used for the deposition and reduction of graphene oxide. The surface of graphen-coated ITO was characterized using scanning electron microscopy and energy dispesive X-ray spectroscopy. The electrodes were evaluated by performing cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The number of cycles and scan rate greatly influenced on the coverage and the degree of reduction of graphene oxide, thus affecting the electrochemical properties of electrodes. Modification of ITO with graphene generated higher current with lower charge transfer resistance at the electrode-electrolyte interface. Glucose oxidase was immobilized on the graphene-modified ITO and has been found to successfully generate electrons by oxidizing glucose.
Lithium sulfur (Li-S) batteries have attracted considerable attention as a promising candidate for next-generation power sources due to their high theoretical energy density, low cost, and eco-friendliness. However, the poor electrical conductivity of sulfur and its insoluble discharging products (Li2S2/Li2S), large volume changes, severe self-discharge, and dissolution of lithium polysulfide intermediates result in rapid capacity fading, low Coulombic efficiency, and safety risks, hindering Li-S battery commercial development. In this study, a three-dimensionally (3D) connected hierarchical porous carbon framework (HPCF) derived from waste sunflower seed shells was synthesized as a sulfur host for Li-S batteries via a chemical activation method. The natural 3D connected structure of the HPCF, originating from the raw material, can effectively enhance the conductivity and accessibility of the electrolyte, accelerating the Li+/electron transfer. Additionally, the generated micropores of the HPCF, originated from the chemical activation process, can prevent polysulfide dissolution due to the limited space, thereby improving the electrochemical performance and cycling stability. The HPCF/S cell shows a superior capacity retention of 540 mA h g-1 after 70 cycles at 0.1 C, and an excellent cycling stability at 2 C for 700 cycles. This study provides a potential biomass-derived material for low-cost long-life Li-S batteries.
Synergistically increased oxygen evolution reaction (OER) of manganese oxide (MnO2) catalyst is introduced with surface-modified halloysite nanotube (Fe3O4-HNTs) structure. The flake shaped MnO2 catalyst is attached on the nanotube template (Fe3O4-HNTs) by series of wet chemical and hydrothermal method. The strong interaction between MnO2 and Fe3O4-HNTs maximized active surface area and inter-connectivity for festinate charge transfer reaction for OER. The synergistical effect between Fe3O4 layer and MnO2 catalyst enhance the Mn3+/Mn4+ ratio by partial replacement of Mn ions with Fe. The relatively increased Mn3+/Mn4+ ratio on MnO2@FHNTs induced 𝜎* orbital (eg) occupation close to single electron, improving the OER performances. The MnO2@FHNTs catalyst exhibited the reduced overpotential of 0.42 V (E vs. RHE) at 10 mA/cm2 and Tafel slope of (99 mV/dec), compared with that of MnO2 with unmodified HNTs (0.65 V, 219 mV/dec) and pristine MnO2 (0.53 V, 205 mV/dec). The present study provides simple and innovative method to fabricate nano fiberized OER catalyst for a broad application of energy conversion and storage systems.

A series of samples in the $Nd_{1-x}Ba_xFeO_{3-y}$ system has been prepared by heating the reactants to$1200^{\circ}C$ under an ambient atmosphere, and the solid solutions were identified by X-ray power diffraction analysis. The crystal systems of samples with x = 0.00 and 0.25 were found to be orthorhombic whose local symmetry is similiar to the distorted octahedral with orthoferrite type one, whereas those with x = 0.50 and 0.75 to be the cubic system. Since Fe ions in the solid solutions are a mixed valence state between $Fe^{3+}\;and\;Fe^{4+}$ ions, the nonstoichiometric chemical formulas could be determined from the mole ratio of $Fe^{4+}$ ion and oxygen vacacies. According to the Mossbauer spectroscopic analysis, the presence of 5-coordinated $FeO_5$ was evidenced only in the barium compounds along with $FeO_6,\;and\;FeO_4$, but not in the strontium and calcium compounds. The samples with x = 0.25 and 0.50 show a spectrum of superparamagnetism, which might be due to the formation of a domain of the ferromagnetic interaction between the $Fe^{3+}\;and\;Fe^{4+}$ ions. The electrical conductivities of all samples are within semiconducting range. Since the $Fe^{4+}$ ion acts as an electron acceptor level during the electron transfer between the Fe through intermediate $O^{2-}$ ions, the activation energy of the compounds decreases with the increment of $Fe^{4+}$ content.
