The free vibration of tapered piles embedded in soil is investigated. The pile model is based on the Bernoulli-Euler beam theory and the soil is idealized as a Winkler model for mathematical simplicity. The governing differential equations for the free vibrations of such members are solved numerically. The square tapered piles with one free and the other hinged end with rotational spring are applied in numerical examples. The lowest two natural frequencies are obtained over a range of non-dimensional system parameters: the rotational spring parameter, the embedded ratio, the foundation parameter, the width ratio of the contact area and the section ratio.
This study was conducted to find out the rational and appropriate design of drilled shaft. In other words, in order to find out the variation of ultimate bearing capacity according to the change in the support layer of drilled shaft, back analysis was performed using the bi-directional pile load test performed on drilled shaft. Based on the back-analyzed data, numerical analysis of the pile head load was performed, and the ultimate bearing capacity in the target ground was evaluated using the Davisson method. As a result of numerical analysis of one case where the end of the pile was seated on the top of the weathered rock layer, and three cases where the end of the pile was embedded at different locations in the weathered soil, it was found that sufficient ultimate bearing capacity was secured in all cases. In other words, the case where the end of the pile is seated on the top of the weathered rock layer, not embedded the weathered rock, and the drilled shaft embedded into the weathered soil also have sufficient bearing capacity, so it can be used as a support layer for drilled shaft.

Based on the theory of porous media, an interaction system of a floating pile and a saturated soil in cylindrical coordinates subjected to vertical harmonic load is presented in this paper. The surrounding soil is separated into two distinct layers. The upper soil layer above the level of pile base is described as a saturated viscoelastic medium and the lower soil layer is idealized as equivalent spring-dashpot elements with complex stiffness. Considering the cylindrically symmetry and the pile-soil compatibility condition of the interaction system, a frequency-domain analytical solution for dynamic impedance of the floating pile embedded in saturated viscoelastic soil is also derived, and reduced to verify it with existing solutions. An extensive parametric analysis has been conducted to reveal the effects of the impedance of the lower soil base, the interaction coefficient and the damping coefficient of the saturated viscoelastic soil layer on the vertical vibration of the pile-soil interaction system. It is shown that the vertical dynamic impedance of the floating pile significantly depends on the real stiffness of the impedance of the lower soil base, but is less sensitive to its dynamic damping variation; the behavior of the pile in poro-visco-elastic soils is totally different with that in single-phase elastic soils due to the existence of pore liquid; the effect of the interaction coefficient of solid and liquid on the pile-soil system is limited.
This paper presents results km a series of model tests oil vertically loaded single piles to compare the behaviors of H and pipe piles under the same ground condition. The aims of this paper were to compare the bearing capacity of H-pile md pipe piles under in the same ground condition and to estimate the effect of gravity acceleration and relative soil density. Relative density of soil were made to be 40%, 80% and embedded length of pile on sand was increased by 10, 12, 14, 16 times of the diameter of pile, respectively. As a results of test series, allowable load of H-pile is from 6.4% to 18.2% larger than allowable load of pipe pile in relative density 80% and from 9.1% to 39.4% larger than allowable load of pipe pile in relative density 40%. As a results of numerical analysis, we were predicted behaviour of stress-displacement of pile with model test. In the case of relative density 80% and 40%, bearing capacity of H pile represent from 17.74% to 18.6% larger than allowable load of pipe pile.
This study investigates the uplift capacity of a single vertical belled pile buried at shallow depth in dry sand. The laboratory model experiments are conducted with different pile-tip angles and relative densities. In addition, image and FEM analyses are performed to observe the failure surface of the belled pile for different pile-tip angles and relative densities. Accordingly, the uplift capacity and failure angle in the failure surface of the belled pile were found to depend on the belled pile-tip angle and relative density. A predictive model for the uplift capacity of the belled pile was proposed considering the relative density and belled pile-tip angle based on a previous limit equilibrium equation. To validate the applicability of the proposed model, the values calculated using the proposed and previous models were compared to those obtained through a laboratory model experiment. The proposed model had the best agreement with the laboratory model experiment.
The uplift capacity of a pile for improving the wind resistance of the 1-2 W type plastic film pipe on greenhouses was tested using the plane and corrugated piles with various shapes and diameters. First, the resistant uplift capacity was measured by using the uplift loading on plane piles. As the uplift loading on plane piles increased, the resistant uplift capacity also increased until the loading was reached to ultimate uplift capacity. After ultimate uplift capacity was appeared the uplift displacement, the uplift capacity was decreased gradually. Secondly, the resistant uplift capacity was measured by using the uplift loading on corrugated piles. After the uplift capacity was reached the uplift displacement, the uplift capacity was continually increased or decreased. In general, the ultimate uplift capacity was independent of pile shapes, pile diameter length, and embedded pipe depth. However, the ultimate uplift capacity of a corrugated pile was twice more than that of a plane pile without regard to its diameter and embedded depth. The ultimate uplift capacity per unit pile area was increasing in deeper embedded depth. However, the longer a pile diameter was, the less ultimate uplift capacity. The uplift capacity of a plane pile, used in conjunction with the design wind velocity (26.9m.s$^{-1}$ ) of the project area, was unsatisfiable without regard to diameters and embedded depths of piles, while most of corrugated piles were well appeared uplift capacity under various experimental conditions.

The vibration characteristics of fully and partially embedded piles with flexibly supported end carrying an eccentric tip mass are investigated. The pile model is based on the Bernoulli-Euler theory and the soil is idealized as a Winkler model for mathematical simplicity. The governing differential equations for the free vibrations of such members are solved numerically using the corresponding boundary conditions. The lowest three natural frequencies and corresponding mode shapes are calculated over a wide range of non-dimensional system parameters: the rotational spring parameter, the relative stiffness, the embedded ratio, the mass ratio, the dimensionless mass moment of inertia, and the tip mass eccentricity.

This Paper shows the results of a series of model tests on the behavior of single rigid Pile, which subjected to lateral load, in non-homogeneous Nak-Dong River sands, consisted of two layers, upper and lower layers. The purpose of the present paper is to investigate the effect of ratio of lower layer thickness to embedded pile length ratio of soil modules of upper to lower layer (E$\sub$h1//E$\sub$h2/) and pile head constraint condition on the characteristics of lateral behavior of single pile. These effects can be quantified only by the results of model tests. As a model test result, in non-homogeneous sand, it shows that the lateral behavior depends upon the ratio of soil modules of upper to lower layer more than other factors. And, in respect of deflection, it was found that the reduction ratio of deflection by pile head fixity is the value of 0.5 and 0.6 for E$\sub$h1//E$\sub$h2/=0.18 and E$\sub$h1//E$\sub$h2/=5.56, respectively. The critical thickness of lower layer on the change of deflection is about 25 - 50% of pile embedded length. Also, in respect of maximum bending moment it was found that the reduction ratio of maximum bending moment by pile head fixity is the value of 0.55 and 0.7 for E$\sub$h1//E$\sub$h2/=0.18 and E$\sub$h1//E$\sub$h2/=5.56, respectively.
In order to investigation Lateral bearing capacity of bored-precast pile, we carried out the analysis of the relationship between Lateral load and horizontal displacement using the result of horizontal pile load test. The six piles injected cement milk of 50%, 70% and 100% of the embedded length of pile were used in the horizontal pile load test. The horizontal displacement, yielding load and horizontal bearing capacity are mainly affected by The injecting ratio of cement milk (injected length of cement milk/embedded length of pile). As the injecting ratio of cement milt is increased, the starting point of horizontal displacement in piles become close to the ground surface and the amount of horizontal displacement is decreased. Also, the horizontal bearing capacity and yielding load are highly increased with increasing the ration of cement milk. The horizontal bearing capacity and yielding load of bored pile with 1 of cement milk ratio are about two or three times those of pile with 0.5 of cement milk ratio.

Seismic analyses of a pile under a large rigid basement foundation embedded in the homogeneous soil layer were performed practically by a response displacement method assuming a sinusoidal wave form. However, it is hard to take into account the characteristics of a large mat foundation and a heterogeneous soil layer with the response displacement method. The response displacement method is relevant to the 2D problems for longitudinal structures such as tunnel, underground cave structure, etc., but might not be relevant with isolated foundations for building structures. In this study, seismic pile analysis by a pseudo 3D finite element method was carried out to compare numerical results with results of the response displacement method considering 3D characteristics of a foundation-soil system which is important for the building foundation analyses. Study results show that seismic analyses results of a response displacement method are similar to those of a pseudo 3D numerical method for stiff and dense soil layers, but they are too conservative for a soft soil layer inducing large soil pressures on the foundation wall and large pile displacements due to ignored foundation rigidity and resistance.
