  • This paper focused on three drawbacks exposed in subject matter related to solid figures in elementary school math textbook. First, general solid figure are introduced before rectangular parallelepiped and cube in fifth grade math textbook, and prism and pyramid in sixth grade math textbook are introduced. Second, the process of abstraction from concrete objects to solid figures is insufficient in sixth grade math textbook. Third, some definitions in subject matter related to solid figures are inconsistent and ambiguous. The following four suggestions can be put forward as a conclusion based on these results. First, subject matter in textbooks must be correspond with that in curriculum. Second, it is necessary to inform teachers of range of subject matter through teachers guide book and manual for curriculum definitely. Third, each grade subject matter in math textbooks must be reexamined. Fourth, regular modification of math textbooks must be possible institutionally.

  • The 7th curriculum sets a basic direction based on learner centered teaching, with the aim of allowing students to develop their mathematical ability. Teachers' manuals are provided to help teachers fallow the basic direction and achieve the curriculum aims, but in practice they are not always helpful. Therefore, we reconstructed parts of a teachers' manual. This involved analyzing the contents of units 6, 7 and 8 of the elementary mathematics textbook 4 na to identify and outline the problems; introducing more detailed teaching methods and activities; and developing teaching learning materials. We tested the new version in several real classes and analysed the responses 6f teachers and students to examine the possibility of its practical use. The results suggest that the reconstructed version of the teachers' manual for units 6, 7 and 8 of textbook 4 na is of greater practical utility.

  • In this study, the vocabularies in elementary mathematics textbooks for grade 1-2 were analyzed according to 9-degree of semantic system. Also, the types of vocabulary were analyzed using general academic words, mathematics specific concept words, and mathematics general concept words. As a result, percentages of 1-degree and 2-degree vocabulary was the most in both grade 1 and 2 mathematics textbooks. It also shows that some of general academic words were 3-degree vocabulary and some of mathematics specific concept words were either unregistered or 1-degree vocabulary. In particular, general academic words, which are 3-degree vocabulary, may be unfamiliar to 1st and 2nd grade students. Therefore, students should be given the opportunity to guess and understand the contextual meaning of general academic words from the given contexts in textbooks. The frequency of use of mathematics general concept words in grade 2 textbook increased significantly compared to grade 1 textbook. Since mathematics general concept words are academic and technical vocabulary they should be taught explicitly. Based on the results of this study, implications for vocabulary instruction in mathematics textbooks were discussed.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop the elementary mathematics textbooks as a thematic approach, to suggest meaningful directions to future textbook development and curriculum development. For this study, we suggested mathematics textbooks of the three-themes, 'Healthy Life', 'Sustainable Life', 'Living-together Life', as multi-disciplinary, inter-disciplinary, and extra-disciplinary types. With the problems that employed thematic approaches, the post-achievement scores of experimental groups who used 'Healthy Life' and 'Sustainable Life' textbooks were meaningfully higher than those of control groups. However, the post-achievement scores of experimental groups who used 'Living-together Life' textbook were not meaningfully higher than those of control groups. The attitudes towards mathematics of all three experimental groups were meaningfully higher than those of control groups. After applications of elementary mathematics textbooks as a thematic approach, we need to develop related materials, to consider various grades, levels, regions for developing better mathematics textbooks.

  • This paper analyzed the units of capacity and weight in the mathematics textbooks in terms of units, relationship between the units, and the need of standard units. The results of this study showed that there were differences in the representation of the units, the notation of units, the types of units, and the representation of basic amount of units in the mathematics textbooks developed by the 5th, 6th, 7th, 2007 revised, and 2009 revised national mathematics curriculum respectively. The mathematics textbook developed by the 2009 revised mathematics curriculum was found to be generally consistent with the International System of Units (SI). However, the way of defining 1kg through the weight of water was found to be different from the SI. The relationship between the units was consistently described only with a written sentence in the previous mathematics textbooks, but the 2009 revised mathematics textbook presents questions and pictures to foster students' understanding of the relationship. Finally, activities and questions are required for students to recognize the universality and convenience of the standard units through the inconvenience of arbitrary units. Based on these results, this paper provides implications for the development of mathematics textbooks in the units of capacity and weight.

  • In this thesis, we inquire into teaching method of decimal fraction concept in elementary mathematics education based on measurement activity. For this purpose, our research tasks are as follows: First, we design a experimental learning-teaching plan of 'decimal fraction' unit in 4th grade textbook and verify its effect. Second, after teaching experiment using experimental learning-teaching plan, we analyze the student's status of understanding about decimal fraction concept. As stated above, we have performed teaching experiment which is ruled by new lesson design and analysed the effects of teaching experiment. Through this study, we obtained the following results. First, introduction of decimal fraction based on measurement activity promotes student's understanding of measuring number and decimal notation. Second, operator concept of decimal fraction is widely used in daily life. Its usage is suitable for elementary mathematics education within the decimal notation system. Third, a teaching method of times concepts using place value expansion of decimal fraction is more meaningful and has less possibility of misunderstanding than mechanical shift of decimal point. Fourth, teaching decimal fraction through the decimal expansion helps students with understanding of digit 0 contained in decimal fraction, comparing of size and place value. Fifth, students have difficulties in understanding conversion process of decimal fraction into decimal notation system using measurement activity. It can be done easily when fraction is used. However, that is breach to curriculum. It is necessary to succeed research for this.

  • In this study, an implication has been drawn for the textbook development and teaching and learning process as a congruence of a figure is compared and analyzed between Korean elementary mathematics textbooks and American elementary math textbooks. Based on the result of comparison and analysis in congruence contents between Korean and EM textbooks, some applications for the development of figure and congruence chapters in Korean textbooks are as below. First of all, in term of congruence, activities related to congruence need to be introduced after the concept of congruence is defined either with illustrations of fundamental figures such as a segment and angle or with examples of polygon. Second, it is required to assist students to realize that compasses can be used to copy length. In Korean textbooks, compasses are being introduced as a tool to draw circles, which causes children to have difficulty in drawing triangles. Last, for the implication of congruence, tessellation suggested in American Everyday Mathematics textbooks is worth being applied to the development of Korean textbooks.

  • Angle has a variety of aspects, such as figure, measurement, and rotation, but is mainly introduced from a figure perspective and a quantitative perspective of the angle is also partially experienced in the elementary mathematics textbooks. The purpose of this study was to examine how the angle concept introduction and development pattern in elementary school mathematics textbooks are linked or changed in middle school mathematics textbooks, and based on this, was to get the direction of writing math textbooks and implications for guidance. To this end, 57 math textbooks for the first grade of middle school were collected from the first to the 2015 revised curriculum. As a result of the study, it was found that middle school textbooks had a greater dynamic aspect of each than elementary school textbooks, and the proportion of quantitative attributes of angle was higher in addition to qualitative and relational attributes. In other words, the concept of angle in middle school textbooks is presented in a more multifaceted and complex form than in elementary school textbooks. Finally, matters that require consensus within elementary, secondary, and secondary schools were also proposed, such as the use of visual expression or symbol, such as the use of arrows and dots, and the use of mathematical terms such as vertex of angle and side of angle.

  • The purpose of this paper was to analyze the example spaces related with the concepts of triangles in the 2nd grade Korean elementary mathematics textbooks, investigate the meaning of example spaces, and suggest the implications to teaching and learning geometrical concepts in the elementary schools. Mathematics textbooks are usually major materials in teaching and learning mathematics in Korea, and the content of the textbooks affects the quality of teaching and learning in the classroom. The results of the study showed that the Korean elementary textbooks provided examples with limited example spaces concerning the concepts of triangles. The researcher suggested that we should provide rich examples spaces, encourage learner-generated example spaces, and strengthen the connections of examples between in textbooks and in the classroom.
