The purpose of this study was to investigate the elementary school teachers' perception of science writing. In this study, 10 elementary school teachers who have taught in the 3rd or 4th grade science lesson in 2010 were selected. Researchers constructed interview guide in three parts including the teachers' understanding of science writing, the status of science writing teaching and the difficulties of science writing in their classes. For the investigation, semi-structured in-depth interviews with 10 elementary school teachers were conducted individually. The results showed that the elementary school teachers were unfamiliar with the word ‘science writing’ and considered science writing as a writing using science learning contents. Also, they think that teaching science writing in their science lessons was not needed and didn't assess and provide detailed feedback with the students' written works. Most teachers needed teaching materials and assessment tools for science writing. To develop elementary teachers' understanding of the value and use of writing for learning in science, they will need to participate in science writing programs for in-service teachers and various teaching materials and assessment tools should also be developed.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the science reasoning differences of elementary school students' science writing. For this purpose, science writing activities and analysis frameworks were developed. Science writing data were collected and analyzed. Third to sixth grade elementary students were selected from a middle high level elementary school in terms of a national achievement test in Seoul. A total of 320 writing materials were analyzed. The results of the analysis were as follows. Science writings show science reasoning at 52 % for $3^{rd}$ grade, 68% for $4^{th}$ grade, 85% for $5^{th}$ grade, and 89% for $6^{th}$ grade. Three types of scientific reasoning such as inductive reasoning, deductive reasoning, and abductive reasoning appeared in science writing of the third to sixth graders. The abductive reasoning appeared very low in comparing with inductive and deductive reasoning. Level three appeared the most frequently in the science writing of the elementary students. The levels of inductive and deductive reasoning in science writing increased according to increasing grade and showed statistical differences between grades. But the levels of abductive reasoning did not show an increasing aspect according to increasing grade and also did not show statistical differences between grades. The levels of inductive reasoning and deductive reasoning of the 3rd grade was very low in comparing with the other grades.
The purpose of this research is to know the scientific reasoning ability of elementary students. In order to find it, 320 elementary students wrote a report about germination of the 700 or 2,000 years old seeds. Their writings were analyzed by scientific writing analysis frameworks, Scientific Reasoning Types and Scientific Reasoning Level Criteria developed by Lim (2018). Minto Pyramid Principles was used to show statements and relations of statements related to scientific reasoning. This paper showed scientific reasoning statements of elementary students about germination of seeds. The characteristics of scientific reasoning of elementary students were as follows. In the process of logical writing by the types of scientific reasoning, many students showed various characteristics and different levels. In the writings based on inductive reasoning, they did not distinguish between common features and differences of cases, and did not derive the rules based on common features and differences of the cases. In the writings based on deductive reasoning, there were cases where the major premise corresponding to the principle or rule was omitted and only the phenomenon was described, or the rule was presented but not connected with the case. In the writings based on abductive reasoning, the ability to selectively use the background knowledge related to the question situation was not sufficient, and borrowing of similar background knowledge, which was commonly used in other situations, was very rare.
This study examined the educational effects of journal writing on environmental literacy of elementary students. Thirty-one 3rd grade students were involved in the journal writing which is considered as one of the most frequently performed writing activities in elementary students. Topics for the journal writing were chosen from a textbook on the environment. Before and after the journal writing, an instrument was used to measure the environmental literacy of the students. The environmental literacy instrument was originally developed by Jin (2004) then were modified by Kim (2005) for elementary students. The results of this study are as follows. The environmental literacy of the students, on average, was improved from 140.84 (74.5%) to 161.84 (85.6%) after the journal writing and the difference was statistically significant(t=7.46, p<.001). The environmental literacy scores were significantly improved in every variable after the journal writing: ecological knowledge(t=3.60, p<.01), environmental sensitivity(t=2.54, p<.05), knowledge of environmental issues(t=3.11, p<.01), environmental attitude(t=5.92, p<.001), environmental concern(t=5.27, p<.001), sense of environmental crisis(t=2.97, p<.01), environmental issue investigation and action strategy knowledge (t=2.34, p<.05), environmental skill(t=4.86, p<.001), locus of control(t=5.63, p<.001), and responsible environmental behavior(t=4.64, p<.001). This study also shows that improvement of the students was statistically significant in each of the four levels of goals in environmental education: EE goal level I (t=4.22, p<.001), level II (t=7.53, p<.001), level III(t=5.01, p<.001), and level IV(t=5.46, p<.001). The results imply that the journal writing on the environment is effective in cultivating elementary students' environmental literacy and in achieving goals in environmental education.
The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of science writing heuristic(SWH) instruction based on Tolumin's structure of argument, on students' science process skills and scientific attitude. In the instruction, unstructured problems were selected with issues to be argued, in which interactions among students are stressed. This research involved 58 students of 5th grade at an elementary school, and divided them into an experimental group with 29 and a control group with 29. The former was treated with instruction using argumentation as SWH, while the latter with conventional ways of instruction. Science process skills and scientific attitude were compared between the two groups and within each of the groups. The results implied that science instruction using science writing heuristic is effective in improving learning science process skills and scientific attitude.
This study compared the characteristics of scientific poems written by scientifically-gifted and general elementary students, and their perceptions of writing scientific poem. To do this, 5~6 graders (n=100) at two gifted science education institutes and 5~6 graders (n=93) at a elementary school in Seoul were selected. Scientific poems written by the students were analyzed according to their numbers and types. Their perceptions of writing scientific poems were also analyzed through a questionnaire and group interviews. The analysis of the results revealed that the general students wrote more scientific poems than the scientifically-gifted students for thirty minutes. The general students mainly named the titles in a direct way, while scientifically-gifted students did it in an implicit way. The free verse poems in both general students and scientifically-gifted students appeared most frequently, and the prose or narrative poems also often appeared. The general and scientifically-gifted students frequently used impersonation, and some students did not use metaphors. They didn't connect the scientific knowledge for multiple grade. While the poems of the general students evenly included the scientific knowledge for various academic fields, those of scientifically-gifted students tended to include the scientific knowledge for physics or chemistry. The poems of scientifically-gifted students tended to include more science process skills, especially in basic inquiry skills, than those of general students. The scientifically-gifted students wrote scientific poems in a more expanded form regarding the scientific knowledge, than the general students. Scientifically-gifted students perceived the educational benefits of writing scientific poems more positively based on various cognitive and affective aspects. However, many scientifically-gifted and general students had also several difficulties in the processes of writing scientific poems. Educational implications of these findings are discussed.

We investigated the effect of Science Writing Heuristic (SWH) on elementary students' concept formation and their retention. Also we explored the interaction effect of those with scientific attitudes. We developed mirrors/lenses lessons incorporating SWH. An experimental group of fifth grade students (n=25) had been instructed with SWH lessons for six periods while a control group (n=25) taught according to the normal science lessons based on the Korean national curriculum using teacher's guides published by the Ministry of Education. Results of pre- and post-test of understanding the concept of mirrors and lenses showed a positive impact of SWH on both male and female students. However, the retention effect after post-test revealed that SWH only had an effect on female students' scientific attitudes. SWH, therefore, could be an effective teaching approach especially on concept formation, retention effects by fostering female students' scientific attitudes.

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of PBL applied environmental writing class on the climate literacy and environmental sensitivity of 43 5th grade students. To carry out this study, an environmental writing class that applied PBL in the 8th class was developed and applied to examine the effect. The conclusions of this study are as follows. First, the environmental writing class applying PBL had a statistically significant effect on improving the climate literacy of elementary school students. Statistically significant results were found in the cognitive and definitional domains, excluding the sub-domain of climate literacy. Second, the environmental writing class applying PBL has a significant effect on improving the environmental sensitivity of elementary school students. Statistically significant effects were found in all sub-domains of environmental sensitivity, sensitivity, aesthetic sense and emotional stability, and sympathy and compassion. The reason why the environmental writing class applying PBL was able to improve the climate literacy and environmental sensitivity of elementary school students is that students actively participate in the class to solve environmental problems and realize that environmental problems are deeply related to our real lives.
This study is the analysis of the form of the word appeared in the sixth grade of elementary school students' writing errors. The major findings of this study are as follows. 14532 words appeared, the average is 145.3. And 1903 sentences, and average 19.0 papers. On average, one sentence have consisted of 7.6 word. Second, the 69 people out of 100 had an error. This is serious. Because this study contains very basic contents. Third, the order of errors are abbreviations(33.09%), endings(27.70%), etc(19.78%), stems(19.42%). The results of this study can contribute to revise a elementary school textbooks. And the results of this study can contribute to select the contents of elementary spelling teaching.
