  • In this study, we have fabricated a fiber-optic radiation sensor using an organic scintillator for high energy electron beam therapy. The intensities of scintillating light from a fiber-optic radiation sensor are measured with different field size, electron beam energy and monitor unit of a clinical linear accelerator. To obtain percent depth dose(PDD), the amount of scintillating light is measured at different depth of polymethylmethacrylate(PMMA) phantom. Also the intensity of Cerenkov light is measured and characterized as a function of incident angle of electron beam and a subtraction method is investigated using a background optical fiber to remove a Cerenkov light.

  • Wavelet transform analysis results show a spectrum energy distribution of CWT along scale factors distinguish the partial, full and over penetration in a electron beam welding by analyzing the curve of spectrum energy at small scale, middle and large scale range, respectively. Two types of signals collected by Ion collector and x-ray sensors and analyzed. The acquired signals from sensors are very complicated since these signals are very closely related the dynamics of keyhole which interact the very high density energy with materials during welding. The results show the wavelet transform is more effective to diagnosis than Fourier Transform, further for the general welding defects which are not a periodic based, but a transient, non-stationary and time-varying phenomena.

  • A new compact, low-energy electron beam irradiator has been developed. The core-loss of silicon steels can be reduced by magnetic-domain refinement method. The irradiator was developed for the application of core-loss reduction using the method. The beam energy of the irradiator can be varied from 35 to 80 keV and the maximum current is 3mA. The irradiation area is designed to be $30\times30mm2$ now and will be upgraded to $30\times150mm2$ using a scanning magnet and scanning cone. The electron beam generated from 3 mm diameter LaB6 is extracted to the air for the irradiation of the silicon steels in the air. A special irradiation port was developed for this low-energy irradiator. A havar foil with $4.08{\mu}m$ thickness were used for the window and a cold air-cooling system keeps the foil structure by removing heat at the window. The irradiator system and its operation characteristics will be discussed.

  • We have developed a Monte Carlo (MC) simulator for electron beam lithography in multi-layer resists and multi-layer substrates in order to fabricate and develop high-speed PHEMT devices for millimeter- wave applications. For the deposited energy calculation to multi-layer resists by electron beam in MC simulation, we modeled newly for multi-layer resists and heterogeneous multi-layer substrates. Using this model, we simulated T-gate or r-gate fabrication process in PHEMT device and showed our results with SEM observations.

  • Various oxide particles are synthesized in an ambient condition using an electron beam irradiation system. The formation of oxide particles is confirmed by FT-IR spectra results and the X-ray photoelectron spectrum. It is also shown that the morphology and size of oxide particles are significantly influenced by the type and flowrate of dilution gas. The energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis also confirms that various oxide particles are synthesized.

  • It was previously pointed out that mutation is the ultimate source of variation. Adequate variation is needed for plant breeding if there is a limitation in natural genetic resources. When the ionizing radiation has been known to cause chromosomal and genomic alternations, it is widely used for inducing mutagenesis. The electron beam as an ionizing radiation is the principal physical mutagens that induces mutation and effectively used in plant breeding. Since dose-response relationships of electron beam in plant species are rarely known, we investigated the seed germination rate and early seedling growth of irradiated seeds of creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris Huds., cv Penn-A1) with various electron beam irradiating conditions (1, 1.3, 2 MeV at both 0.03 mA and 0.06 mA with dose of 100 Gy (Gray) and 0.03, 1, 1.3, 2 MeV at 0.03 mA with dose of 200 Gy, respectively) using electron accelerator at Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. The growth parameters in terms of shoot length, primary root length, and secondary root length showed similar response between 0.06 / 1 (mA / MeV) at 100 Gy and 0.03 / 0.3 (mA / MeV) at 200 Gy. Bentgrass seed germination was mainly affected by the intensity of irradiated dose (Gray). Germination rate was lowered as the irradiated dose increased. On the other hand, early seedling growth was mainly governed not by the dose of radiation but by voltage.

  • Purpose: In this study, the accuracies of electron Monte Carlo (eMC) calculation algorithms were evaluated to determine whether electron beams were modeled by optional air profiles (APs) designed for each applicator size. Methods: Electron beams with the energies of 6, 9, 12, and 16 MeV for VitalBeam (Varian Medical System, Palo Alto, CA, USA) and 6, 9, 12, 16, and 20 MeV for Clinac iX (Varian Medical System) were used. Optional APs were measured at the source-to-detector distance of 95 cm with jaw openings appropriate for each machine, electron beam energy, and applicator size. The measured optional APs were postprocessed and converted into the w2CAD format. Then, the electron beams were modeled and calculated with and without optional APs. Measured profiles, percentage depth doses, penumbras with respect to each machine, and energy were compared to calculated dose distributions. Results: For VitalBeam, the profile differences between the measurement and calculation were reduced by 0.35%, 0.15%, 0.14%, and 0.38% at 6, 9, 12, and 16 MeV, respectively, when the beams were modeled with APs. For Clinac iX, the differences were decreased by 0.16%, -0.31%, 0.94%, 0.42%, and 0.74%, at 6, 9, 12, 16, and 20 MeV, respectively, with the insertion of APs. Of note, no significant improvements in penumbra and percentage depth dose were observed, although the beam models were configured with APs. Conclusions: The accuracy of the eMC calculation can be improved in profiles when electron beams are modeled with optional APs.

  • Recently, the use of large-electron-beam polishing for polishing complex metal surfaces has been proposed. In this study, the temperature induced by a large electron beam was predicted using the heat transfer theory. A finite element (FE) model of a continuous wave (CW) electron beam was constructed assuming Gaussian distribution. The temperature distribution and melting depth of an SUS304 sample were predicted by changing electron-beam polishing process parameters such as energy density and beam velocity. The results obtained using the developed FE model were compared with experimental results for verifying the melting depth prediction capability of the developed FE model.

  • Electron beam treatment was applied for improving dissolution of cellulose with ionic liquids. Two ionic liquids, 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([Amim]Cl]: AC) and 1,3-dimethylimidazolium methylphosphite ([Dmim][$(MeO)(H)PO_2$]: Me) were used for this experiment. Treatment with electron beams up to dose of 400 kGy resulted in the increase of hot water extract and alkali extract of cotton pulp and the great reduction in the molecular weight of cellulose. For the dissolution of cotton pulp with two ionic liquids, the electron beam treated samples showed faster dissolution. The dissolved cellulose with Me ionic liquid were regenerated with acetonitrile and the structure of regenerated cellulose showed distinct difference depending on the electron beam treatment. Those results provide the electron beam pre-treatment could be applied as an energy efficient and environmentally benign method to increase the dissolution of cellulose with ionic liquids.

  • In the present work, the effect of electron beam irradiation on the chemical and thermal characteristics of cellulose-based jute fibers was explored by means of chemical analysis, electron spin resonance analysis, ATR-FTIR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and thermomechanical analysis. Jute fiber bundles were uniformly irradiated in the range of 2~100 kGy by a continuous method using a conveyor cartin an electron beam tunnel. Electron beam treatment, which is a physical approach to change the surfaces, more or less changed the chemical composition of jute fibers. It was also found that the radicals on the jute fibers can be increasingly formed with increasing electron beam intensity. However, the electron beam irradiation did not change significantly the chemical functional groups existing on the jute fiber surfaces. The electron beam irradiation influenced the thermal stability and thermal shrinkage/expansion behavior and the behavior depended on the electron beam intensity.
