Disinfection of Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis using underwater plasma

  • Discharge under the water is very hard and demand considerable high voltage. But specially improved electrode can generate plasma discharge to salty water with relatively low voltage. A round shape ceramic electrode having many pinholes combined with metallic one can generate plasma. 400 volt, 10 kHz and 3 micro second pulse width were applied to repeatedly running synthetic seawater with 10 L/m velocity, containing cultivated E. coli and Bacillus. As a result, 18, 94, 99.97, 100, 100 % disinfection rates to E. coli and 17.1, 17.1, 82.9, 99.4, 99.9 % disinfection rates to Bacillus subtilis were achieved to 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 times repetitive treatment respectively. In the plasma condition, the ions and electrons are separated and new kinds of components are re-synthesized by the intensive movement of the components. Especially chlorine ions are separated and recombined to residual free chlorine like HOCl, $OCl^-$. The residual free chlorine concentrations of discharged water were 0.25, 0.88, 1.39, 1.59, 1.66 mg $Cl_2$/L after 5 times treatment respectively. Another unconfirmed radical and oxidants for example, OH, $H_2O_2$, and $O_3$ can have an effect on microorganism of course.

  • Electrodeposition is a synthetic method that allows fine control of the nucleation and growth factors of metals and is a suitable method for studying the nucleation and growth of Ni(OH)2. Hexa-methylenetetramine (HMT) helps to form Ni(OH)2 nanosheets by increasing the OH- of the nickel precursor solution and helps to improve the electrochemical properties of the electrode. In this study, the structural properties of Ni(OH)2 nanosheets according to the HMT concentration change using electrodeposition were studied. As the concentration of HMT increased, the size and thickness of the Ni(OH)2 nanosheet adsorbed on the surface increased and porosity increased. Also, the Scharifker-Hills nucleation theory model and experimental data were compared. In conclusion, the nanosheet shape of the HMT 7.5 mM sample electrodeposited with -0.85 V vs. Ag/AgCl grew most uniformly, and the best result was obtained as an electrode material for a pseudocapacitor.

구리 나노 큐브를 전기 도금한 레이저 유도 그래핀 전극 기반의 글루코스 측정용 유연 센서 개발 (Development of Flexible Glucose Measurement Sensor Based on Copper Nanocubes Electroplated Laser Induced Graphene Electrode)

  • In this paper, we describe the development of a non-enzymatic glucose sensor based on copper nanocubes(Cu NCs) electroplated laser induced graphene(LIG) electrodes which can detect a certain range of glucose concentrations. $CO_2$ laser equipment was used to form LIG electrodes on the PI film. This fabrication method allows easy control of the LIG electrode size and shape. The Cu NCs were electrochemically deposited on the LIG electrodes to improve electron transfer rates and thus enhancing electrocatalytic reaction with glucose. The average sheet resistances before and after electroplating were $15.6{\Omega}/{\Box}$ and $19.6{\Omega}/{\Box}$, respectively, which confirmed that copper nanocubes were formed on the laser induced graphene electrodes. The prepared electrode was used to measure the current according to glucose concentration using an electrochemical method. The LIG electrodes with Cu NCs demonstrated a high degree of sensitivity ($1643.31{\mu}A/mM{\cdot}cm^2$), good stability with a linear response to glucose ranging from 0.05 mM to 1 mM concentration, and a limit of detection of 0.05 mM. In order to verify that these electrodes can be used as flexible devices, the electrodes were bent to $30^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$, and $180^{\circ}$ and cyclic voltammetry measurements were taken while the electrodes were bent. The measured data showed that the peak voltage was almost constant at 0.42 V and the signal was stable even in the flexed condition. Therefore, it is concluded that these electrodes can be used in flexible sensors for detecting glucose in the physiological sample like saliva, tear or sweat.

  • We investigated the electrochemical properties of lithium/molybdenum sulfide(Li/MoS$_2$) using tetra (ethylene glycol) dimethyl ether(TEGDME) electrolyte. The Li/TEGDME/MoS$_2$ cell showed the first discharge capacity of 288mAhg$^{-1}$. From the XRD, SEM results of the MOS$_2$ electrode in various cut-off voltage during charge-discharge process, MoS$_2$ partly changed into Li$_2$S and Mo during discharge and Li$_2$S partly recovered into MOS$_2$ and Li during charge. Full charged MOS$_2$ electrode showed lump shape of big size, which might be related to agglomerate of MoS$_2$ particles. Therefore, the degradation might be related to decrease of active material for electrochemical reaction by agglomeration of MOS$_2$.

  • In the response to an increasing demand for electrical energy, much effort aimed to develop and commercialise HTS power equipments is going on around the world. For the development, it is necessary to establish the dielectric technology in $LN_2$. Hence many types of dielectric tests should be carried out to understand the dielectric phenomena at cryogenic temperature and to gather various dielectric data. Among the many types dielectric tests, the barrier effect were conducted with the simulated electrode after analysing the insulating configuration of the pancake coil type HTS transformer. The influence of a barrier on the dielectric strength was measured according to the size and the position of the barrier. It was shown that the effectiveness, the ratio of the breakdown voltage in presence of barrier to the voltage without barrier, is highest when the barrier is placed at the needle electrode side. And the barrier effect was not depend on the electrode array. The life time to breakdown with decreasing the applied voltage was increased remarkably having wide error band but the shape parameter in Weibull distribution was almost constant.

디스플레이용 ITO 전극의 동작 압력에 따른 특성 연구 (A Study of Characteristic based on Working Pressure of ITO Electrode for Display)

  • 본 논문에서는 투명 전극용 ITO(Indium Tin Oxide) 박막의 성막 조건을 알아내기 위하여 DC(Direct Current) 마그네트론 스퍼터를 사용해 증착된 ITO 박막의 특성을 분석하였다. 실험 조건은 1~3[mTorr] 분위기압으로 조절하고 인가전압은 260~330[V]로 10[V]씩 스텝을 주어 실험을 진행하였다. 증착된 박막의 투과율, 굴절률 및 표면과 단면 형상을 자외선-가시광선 분광광도계, 타원편광분석기와 주사전자현미경으로 측정하였다. ITO 성막 조건 1~2[mTorr] 분위기압에서 300[V] 정도의 전압이 투과율이 90[%] 이상으로 우수하고 굴절률이 2이상 이였다. 따라서 높은 투명 전도성 전극을 만들기에 적절한 조건임을 확인하였다.

구-구갭의 섬락 특성에 미치는 연소화염의 영향 (Influence of the Combustion Flames on the Flashover Characteristics of the Sphere-Sphere Air Gap)

  • 본 연구에서는 구-구갭을 수평 배치하였을 때, 연소화염에 의한 교류 및 직류 플래시오버전압 특성을 조사하였다. 화염에 의한 플래시오버 극성을 조사하기 위해 전압 및 전류파형을 측정하였으며, 플래시오버가 발생되기 전에 쿨롱력에 의한 화염의 형상 변화를 관찰하였다. 또한 플래시오버 전압의 저하 요인으로서 상대공기밀도의 저하 및 연소화염의 열전리 영향에 대해 고찰하였다. 실험 결과, 구-구갭에서 접지측 전극과 갭길이의 비를 k라고 할 때, 화염위치 k:0(접지측), k=0.5(중앙부) 및 k=1.0(전원측)인 경우 화염에 의한 교류 섬락전압의 평균값은 화염이 없을 때에 비해 각각 79.9, 82.9 및 $87.5[\%]$ 저하되었으며, 또한 화염의 높이 h=0, h=5 및 h=9[cm]일 때 교류 플래시오버 전압의 평균값은 화염이 없는 경우를 기준으로 하였을 때 각각 85.0, 40.8 및 $28.2[\%]$ 저하되었다. 소규모 연소화염에서의 열전리 영향은 크지 않는 것으로 나타났다.

에어로졸 공정에 의한 Multiwall carbon nanotube/Graphene 복합체 제조 및 슈퍼커패시터 특성평가 (Synthesis of Multiwall Carbon Nanotube/Graphene Composite by Aerosol Process and Its Characterization for Supercapacitors)

  • A multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/graphene (GR) composite was synthesized for an enhanced supercapacitor. Aerosol spray pyrolysis (ASP) was employed to synthesize the MWCNT/GR composites using a colloidal mixture of MWCNT and graphene oxide (GO). The effect of the weight ratio of the MWCNT/GO on the particle properties including the morphology and layered structure were investigated. The morphology of MWCNT/GR composites was generally the shape of a crumpled paper ball, and the average composite size was about $5{\mu}m$. MWCNT were uniformly dispersed in GR sheets and the MWCNT not only increase the basal spacing but also bridge the defects for electron transfer between GR sheets. Thus, it was increasing electrolyte/electrode contact area and facilitating transportation of electrolyte ion and electron in the electrode. Electrochemical data demonstrate that the MWCNT/GR (weight ratio=0.1) composite possesses a specific capacitance of 192 F/g at 0.1 A/g and good rate capability (88% capacity retention at 4 A/g) using two-electrode testing system.

FEM-FCT 기법을 이용한 코로나 방전 시뮬레이션에 대한 연구 (A Study on the Corona Discharge Simulation Using FEM-FCT Method)

  • In this paper, the corona discharge is analyzed by Finite Element Method(FEM) combined with Flux-corrected Transport(FCT) algorithm. In the previous papers, Finite Difference Method(FDM) combined with FCT was used. Usually in the FDM, the regionof interest is discretized with structured grids. But to refine local regions with same resolution, much more grids are required for the structured grids than for unstructured grids than for unstructured grids. Therefore, we propose the FEM-FCT method to simulate the corona discharge. The proposed method has good flexibility in model shape and can reduce the computational cost by the local refinement where the physical quantities have steep gradients. Using the proposed method, we study the streamer growth of parallel plate electrodes which is initiated by the low and high perturbation density. We find that the varying the initial density of perturbation has very little effect on the streamer propagation. And the corona discharge of the rod-to-plane electrode is simulated. On the surface of the rod electrode, the high concentration of the electric field gives rise to many number of streamer seeds. The strong axial streamer propagate to the plane electrode. The weaker non-axial streamer repel each other and stop growing more. The results are very similar to those of the papers which used the FDM-FCT method on structured grids. Thus we can conclude that the proposed FEM-FCT method is more efficient than the conventional FDM-FCT method by virtue of the reduction in computational grids number.

  • In this paper, $3^{rd}$ overtone mode energy-trapped filter using modified $PbTiO_3$ system ceramics was manufactured to apply for intermediate frequency SMD-type filter with the variations of splitted electrode size. To investigate the effects of splitted electrode size on filter characteristics of $3^{rd}$ overtone mode energy-trapped filter, ceramic wafers were fabricated by etching splitted rectangular electrode size($b{\times}d$) of b=0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1mm, d=0.3, 0.4, 0.5mm, respectively. And then, SMD-type ceramic filter were fabricated with the size of $3.7{\times}3.1mm$.
