  • Single phase ruthenium oxides with perovskite (ATi1-xRuxO3 (A=Ca, Sr)) and pyrochlore structure (Bi2Ru2O7, Pb2Ru2O6.5) have been prepared reproducibly by solid state reaction methods and their electrocatalytic activities for oxygen evolution have been examined by Tafel plots. Tafel slopes vary from a low value of 42 mV/decade up to 222 mV/decade at room temperature. The high exchange current densities and high Tafel slopes compared with those obtained from the RuO2 DSA electrode at the crystalline single phase metal oxide electrodes suggest that they are better electrocatalysts at low overpotentials. A favorable change in the Tafel slope for the oxygen evolution reaction occurs as the ruthenium content increases. Substitution of Ti for Ru in the perovskite solid solutions enhanced their chemical stability by losing marginal electrochemical activity.

  • o-Phenylenediamine (o-PD) was electropolymerized on glassy carbon electrodes under a potential cycling condition. The resulting polymer films mediated electrons for the reduction of molecular oxygen at pH=1.0. It was found from the RDE, RRDE, and cyclic voltammetry experiments that the modified electrodes reduce oxygen to hydrogen peroxide at about 300 mV lower potential than the bare glassy carbon electrode. The polymer film consisted of more than two components. Among those, only one component was active in oxygen reduction, which was formed mainly in the earlier stage of the electropolymerization. 2,3-Diaminophenazine, a cyclic dimer of o-PD, was also active in the oxygen reduction reaction, from which it was suggested that the active polymeric component has a structural unit similar to the cyclic dimer. Finally, the electropolymerization mechanism for the formation of the active and inactive components has been proposed.

  • Catalytic effects of various cobalt phenylporphyrin compounds on the reduction of thionyl chloride at glassy carbon electrode have been evaluated by determining kinetic parameters with cyclic voltammetric techniques. The concentration of catalysts and the electrode immersion time have been found to affect the catalyst performance strongly, leading to a conclusion that the compounds are first adsorbed at the electrode surface and act as catalysts. Significant improvements in cell performance have been noted in terms of both exchange rate constants of up to 3 times and current densities of up to 150% at glassy carbon electrode.

  • Conducting poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDT) films with metalloporphyrins incorporated as the counter ions were prepared by electropolymerization of the monomer in the presence of metal-tetra(sulfonatophenyl) porphyrin anions. Cathodic reduction of oxygen on the resulting conducting polymer films was studied. The overpotential for O2 reduction on electrodes with cobalt-porphyrin complex was significantly smaller in acidic solutions than on gold. In basic solutions, the overpotential at low current densities was close to those on platinum and gold. Polymer electrode with Co-complex yielded higher limiting currents than with Fe-complex, although the Co-complex polymer electrode was a poorer electrocatalyst for O2 reduction in the activation range of potential than the Fe counterpart. From the rotating ring-disk electrode experiments, oxygen reduction was shown to proceed through either a 4-electron pathway or a 2-electron pathway. In contrast to the polypyr-role-based electrodes, the PEDT-based metalloporphyrin electrodes were stable with wider potential windows, including the oxygen reduction potential. Their electrocatalytic properties were maintained at temperatures up to 80℃ in KOH solutions.

  • The electroreduction of dioxygen at glassy carbon electrodes with irreversible self-assembly of N-hexadecyl-N'-methyl viologen $(C_{16}VC_1)$ proceeds at potentials more positive than those where the reduction occurs at bare electrodes. The electrocatalyzed reduction takes place at potentials well ahead of those where the catalyst is reduced in the absence of dioxygen and the limiting currents observed at rotating disk electrodes did not deviate from the thoretical Levich line up to 6400 rpm, indicating that the electrocatalysis is extremely rapid. The rate constant for the heterogeneous reaction between $C_{16}V^+C_1$ immobilized on the electrode surface and $O_2$ in solution was estimated to be ca. $10^8\;M^{-1}s^{-1}$. The half-wave potential of dioxygen reduction was independent of solution pH.

  • Catalytic effects of various Schiff base metal(II) complexes on the reduction of thionyl chloride at glassy carbon electrode are evaluated by determining the kinetic parameters from cyclic voltammetry technique. The charge transfer process is affected strongly by the concentration of catalysts during the reduction of thionyl chloride. The catalytic effects are shown by both a shift of the reduction potential for thionyl chloride toward more positive direction and an increase in peak current. The diffusion coefficient value, Do, of the 8.17 ${\times}$ 10-9 $cm^2/s$ was observed at the bare glassy carbon electrode, whereas larger values (0.9-1.09 ${\times}$ 10-8 $cm^2/s$) were observed at the catalyst supported glassy carbon electrode. Significant improvements in the cell performance have been noted in terms of both exchange rate constants and current densities at glassy carbon electrode.

  • CO2 electroreduction is considered as a means to overcome climate change by converting CO2 into value-added chemicals and liquid fuels. Although numerous researchers have screened versatile metal for the use of electrodes, and looked into the reaction mechanism, it is still required to develop highly enhanced electrocatalyst for CO2 reduction to reach beyond lab-scale. Plasma treatment applying onto the surface of meal electrodes could improve activity, selectivity and stability of the electrocatalysts. This review highlights the effect of plasma pretreatment, and provides insight to design suitable CO2 electrocatalyst.

  • Developing oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts is essential to accomplish viable CO2 and water electrolysis. Herein, we report the fabrication and OER performance of Ni-foam (NF)-immobilized Ni6 nanoclusters (NCs) (Ni6/NF) prepared by a dip-coating process. The Ni6/NF electrode exhibited a high current density of 500 mA/cm2 for the OER at an overpotential as low as 0.39 V. Ni6/NF exhibited high durability in an alkaline solution without corrosion. Electrokinetic studies revealed that OER can be easily initiated on Ni6 NC with fast electron-transfer rates. Finally, we demonstrated stable CO2-to-CO electroreduction using an NC-based zero-gap CO2 electrolyzer operated at a current density of 100 mA/cm2 and a full-cell potential of 2.0 V for 12 h.

  • An unconventional fabrication technique of nanoelectrode was developed using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and hydrogel. Until now, the precise control of electroactive area down to a few nm2 has always been an obstacle, which limits the wide application of nanoelectrodes. Here, the nanometer-sized contact between the boron-doped diamond (BDD) as conductive AFM tip and the agarose hydrogel as solid electrolyte was well governed by the feedback amplitude of oscillation in the non-contact mode of AFM. Consequently, this low-cost and feasible approach gives rise to new possibilities for the fabrication of nanoelectrodes. The electroactive area controlled by the set point of AFM was investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) of the ferrocenmethanol (FcMeOH) combined with quasi-solid agarose hydrogel as an electrolyte. Single copper (Cu) nanoparticle was deposited at the apex of the AFM tip using this platform whose electrocatalytic activity for nitrate reduction was then investigated by CV and Field Emission-Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM), respectively.
