This paper proposed a high-speed voltage-controlled ring-oscillator(VCRO) using a frequency doubling technique. The design of the proposed oscillator has been based on TSMC 0.18um 1.8V CMOS technology. The frequency doubling technique is achieved by AND-OR operations with 4 signals which have $90^{\circ}$ phase difference one another in one cycle. The proposed technique has been implemented using a 4-stage differential oscillator compose of differential latched inverters and NAND gates for AND and OR operations. The differential ring-oscillator can generate 4 output signals, which are $90^{\circ}$ out-of-phase one another, with low phase noise. The ANP-OR operations needed in the proposed technique are implemented using NAND gates, which is more area-efficient and provides faster switching speed than using NOR gates. Simulation results show that the proposed, VCRO operates in the frequency range of 3.72 GHz to 8 GHz with power consumption of 4.7mW at 4GHz and phase noise of ~-86.79dBc/Hz at 1MHz offset. Therefore, the proposed oscillator demonstrates superior performance compared with previous high-speed voltage-controlled ring-oscillators and can be used to build high-performance frequency synthesizers and phase-locked loops for radio-frequency applications.

For two input-protection schemes suitable for RF ICs utilizing the thyristor and diode protection devices, which can be fabricated in standard CMOS processes, we attempt an in-depth comparison on HBM ESD robustness in terms of lattice heating inside protection devices and peak voltages developed across gate oxides in input buffers, based on DC, mixed-mode transient, and AC analyses utilizing a 2-dimensional device simulator. For this purpose, we construct an equivalent circuit for an input HBM test environment of a CMOS chip equipped with the input ESD protection circuits, which allows mixed-mode transient simulations for various HBM test modes. By executing mixed-mode simulations including up to six active protection devices in a circuit, we attempt a detailed analysis on the problems, which can occur in real tests. In the procedure, we suggest to a recipe to ease the bipolar trigger in the protection devices and figure out that oxide failure in internal circuits is determined by the junction breakdown voltage of the NMOS structure residing in the protection devices. We explain the characteristic differences of two protection schemes as an input ESD protection circuit for RF ICs, and suggest valuable guidelines relating design of the protection devices and circuits.

In this paper we propose a hardware architecture of high-speed CGH (computer generated hologram) generation processor, which particularly reduces the number of memory access times to avoid the bottle-neck in the memory access operation. For this, we use three main schemes. The first is pixel-by-pixel calculation rather than light source-by-source calculation. The second is parallel calculation scheme extracted by modifying the previous recursive calculation scheme. The last one is a fully pipelined calculation scheme and exactly structured timing scheduling by adjusting the hardware. The proposed hardware is structured to calculate a row of a CGH in parallel and each hologram pixel in a row is calculated independently. It consists of input interface, initial parameter calculator, hologram pixel calculators, line buffer, and memory controller. The implemented hardware to calculate a row of a $1,920{\times}1,080$ CGH in parallel uses 168,960 LUTs, 153,944 registers, and 19,212 DSP blocks in an Altera FPGA environment. It can stably operate at 198MHz. Because of the three schemes, the time to access the external memory is reduced to about 1/20,000 of the previous ones at the same calculation speed.

We investigated the design of an RF-powered, wireless temperature sensor tag chip using $0.18-{\mu}m$ CMOS technology. The transponder generates its own power supply from small incident RF signal using Schottky diodes in voltage multiplier. Ambient temperature is measured using a new low-power temperature-to-voltage converter, and an 8-bit single-slope ADC converts the measured voltage to digital data. ASK demodulator and digital control are combined to identify unique transponder (ID) sent by base station for multi-transponder applications. The measurement of the temperature sensor tag chip showed a resolution of $0.64^{\circ}C/LSB$ in the range from $20^{\circ}C$ to $100^{\circ}C$, which is suitable for environmental temperature monitoring. The chip size is $1.1{\times}0.34mm^2$, and operates at clock frequency of 100 kHz while consuming $64{\mu}W$ power. The temperature sensor required a -11 dBm RF input power, supported a conversion rate of 12.5 k-samples/sec, and a maximum error of $0.5^{\circ}C$.
An optimized finite-field multiplier is proposed for encryption and error correction devices. It is based on a modified Linear Feedback Shift Register (LFSR) which has lower power consumption and smaller area than prior LFSR-based finite-field multipliers. The proposed finite field multiplier for GF(2n) multiplies two n-bit polynomials using polynomial basis to produce $z(x)=a(x)^*b(x)$ mod p(x), where p(x) is a irreducible polynomial for the Galois Field. The LFSR based on a serial multiplication structure has less complex circuits than array structures and hybrid structures. It is efficient to use the LFSR structure for systems with limited area and power consumption. The prior finite-field multipliers need 3${\cdot}$m flip-flops for multiplication of m-bit polynomials. Consequently, they need 6${\cdot}$m latches because one flip-flop consists of two latches. The proposed finite-field multiplier requires only 4${\cdot}$m latches for m-bit multiplication, which results in 1/3 smaller area than the prior finite-field multipliers. As a result, it can be used effectively in encryption and error correction devices with low-power consumption and small area.
In software R&D artifacts including documents and program code are produced. There are two kinds of software R&D artifacts: Research artifacts and development artifacts. Research artifacts include software R&D planning document, annual report, final report, research note and so on. Software development artifacts include software requirements, software design description, testing plan, test report, and program code. It is important to verify the documents and to test code to check the direction of the R&D. Moreover, we should check relationships as such completeness and consistency between research and development artifacts. The verification and testing help project manager and researchers understand what they do during software projects. Therefore, in this study, we present a process to verify documents and program in software R & D. In the process we check documents produced in software R&D and test program code. We describe the process by using Essence elements including alpha, activity, and competency. We present a case study to show the effectiveness of the process.
This paper presents the requirements analysis for the Terrestrial DMB Automatic Emergency Alert Service (AEAS) Standard. First, the basic concepts in disaster management and the AEAS system structure are presented as a background. Next, other emergency alert systems and the related standards are analyzed. We propose taxonomy to categorize the emergency alert systems and analyze the characteristics of each system. Next, we analyze advantages of T-DMB for the delivery medium of emergency alert message and problems to resolve for the enhanced performance. Finally, we propose service requirements which will achieve general/special-purpose, non-interrupting, location-adaptive, automatic, message delivery service. The paper will contribute as a guideline to the development for emergency alert service standards for other broadcasting media.

In this Paper, an approximate processing method is proposed and tested. The proposed method uses variable CSD (VCSD) coefficients which approximate filter stopband attenuation by controlling the precision of the CSD coefficient sets. A decimation filter for Audio Codec '97 specifications has been designed having processor architecture that consists of program/data memory, arithmetic unit, energy/level decision, and sinc filter blocks, and fabricated with 0.6${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ CMOS sea-of-gate technology. For the combined two halfband FIR filters in decimation filter, the number of addition operations were reduced to 63.5%, 35.7%, and 13.9%, compared to worst-case which is not an adaptive one. Experimental results show that the total power reduction rate of the filter is varying from 3.8 % to 9.0 % with respect to worst-case. The proposed approximate processing method using variable CSD coefficients is readily applicable to various kinds of filters and suitable, especially, for the speech and audio applications, like oversampling ADCs and DACs, filter banks, voice/audio codecs, etc.

Recently, global warming and tropical nights have caused the use of electric fans to explode. Under these circumstances, running the fan for long periods of time is not only a risk of explosion due to overloading the power but also a small amount of electricity and environmental pollution. Therefore, the research was conducted to develop devices that automatically turn fans on and off according to room temperature, reducing the risk of explosion as well as saving energy. This study suggested that electric fans turn on and off automatically and display temperature in mobile applications. The ability to turn on and off allows the fan to turn on itself if the indoor temperature rises above a certain level. Conversely, if the indoor temperature drops below a certain level, the fan should be turned off. Second, the temperature display function checks indoor temperature through mobile applications. The automatic on/off capabilities proposed in this study could contribute to reducing the risk of explosion and saving energy. However, if the indoor temperature rises above a certain temperature even though there is no one inside, the fan can be turned on. The expectation from this study is that the ability of fans to operate and turn off at appropriate temperatures can reduce the risk of explosion, electrical charges, and environmental pollution.
A CMOS rail-to-rail high voltage buffer amplifier is proposed to drive the gamma correction reference voltage of large TFT LCD panels. It is operating by a single supply and only shows current consumption of 0.5mA at 18V power supply voltage. The circuit is designed to drive the gamma correction voltage of 8-bit or 10-bit high resolution TFT LCD panels. The buffer has high slew rate, 0.5mA static current and 1k$\Omega$ resistive and capacitive load driving capability. Also, it offers wide supply range, offset voltages below 50mV at 5mA constant output current, and below 2.5mV input referred offset voltage. To achieve wide-swing input and output dynamic range, current mirrored n-channel differential amplifier, p-channel differential amplifier, a class-AB push-pull output stage and a input level detector using hysteresis comparator are applied. The proposed circuit is realized in a high voltage 0.18um 18V CMOS process technology for display driver IC. The circuit operates at supply voltages from 8V to 18V.
