  • This paper presents a multi-objective optimization approach to design rotor slot geometry of three-phase squirrel cage induction machine to achieve NEMA design D torque-speed (T-S) characteristics with high efficiency. The multi-objective Particle Swarm Optimization (MOPSO) algorithm combined with the adaptive response surface method and Latin hypercube sampling strategy is applied to obtain the Pareto optimal designs. In order to demonstrate the validity of the suggested optimal algorithm, an application to rotor slot design of three-phase induction motor is presented.

  • This paper proposes the design considerations of resonant network and transformer magnetics for 500 kHz high switching frequency LLC resonant converter. The high power density can be effectively achieved by adopting high switching frequency which allows small size passive components in the converter. The design methodology of magnetizing inductance is derived for zero voltage switching (ZVS) condition, and the design methodology of the transformer and output capacitance is derived to achieve high power density at high operating frequency. Moreover, the structure of transformer is analyzed to obtain the proper inductance value for high switching operation. To verify the proposed design methodology, simulation and experimental results will be presented including temperature of passive and active components, and power conversion efficiency to evaluate dominant power loss. In addition, the validity of magnetics design will be evaluated with operating waveforms of the prototype converter.

  • Generally, the motor inside vehicle is exposed to highly ambient temperature and large vibration according to repeatedly starting and stopping for very short time. So, in this paper, the rotor shape design was performed to improve demagnetization endurance by considering the starting current of the Brushless DC (BLDC) Motor through the Finite Element Method(FEM). As a result, the partial irreversible demagnetization was occurred by starting current at the end of Permanent Magnets of the basic model. To solve this problem, the flux barrier design was performed and the flux on the rotor core was limited. Accordingly, demagnetization endurance and operating characteristics were improved.

  • In this paper, an adaptive optimization strategy utilizing Kriging model and genetic algorithm is proposed for the optimal design of electromagnetic devices. The ordinary Kriging assisted by the spherical covariance model is used to construct surrogate models. In order to improve the computational efficiency, the adaptive uniform sampling strategy is applied to generate sampling points in design space. Through several iterations and gradual refinement process, the global optimal point can be found by genetic algorithm. The proposed algorithm is validated by application to the optimal design of a switched reluctance motor, where the stator pole face and shape of pole shoe attached to the lateral face of the rotor pole are optimized to reduce the torque ripple.

  • Torque ripple minimization without decrease in average torque is a vital attribute in the design of Synchronous Reluctance (SynRel) motor. As the design of SynRel motor is an arduous task, which encompasses many design variables, this work first analyses the significance of the effect of varying the geometrical parameters on average torque and torque ripple and then proposes an extensive optimization procedure to obtain configurations with improved average torque and minimized torque ripple. A hardware prototype is fabricated and tested. The Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software tool used for validating the test results is MagNet 7.6.0.8. Multi Objective Particle Swarm Optimization (MOPSO) is used to determine the various designs meeting the requirements of reduced torque ripple and improved torque performance. The results indicate the efficacy of the proposed methodology and substantiate the utilization of MOPSO as a significant tool for solving design problems related to SynRel motor.
