The effect of senior academic programs by type on life satisfaction

  • In this paper, we propose that it is necessary to expand the programs in the future, Iand it should be possible to activate and to participate the programs continuously, because the higher the participation in leisure program is, the higher life satisfaction.. The Korean Senior Citizens Association has a branch in each province and is used as a place where voluntarily provide friendship activities, hobbies for elderly people aged 65 and information exchange with other leisure activities. However, it was considered to be only a cursory space a few years ago, unlike the activation of leisure programs for the elderly welfare center. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of satisfaction of leisure program by type on life satisfaction of users who have experience in elderly university. The subjective health status and the residential type of participating elderly people differ in their life satisfaction. Therefore, it is important for the elderly to have regular health checkups and to maintain a stable residential style. And also, the experiment results show that life satisfaction was higher when leisure program use satisfaction was higher - especially, satisfaction with health program and health care program was higher.

The Effects of Leisure Activities on Depression, Self-Respect and Sleep Quality in the Elderly with Sleep Disorder (여가활동이 수면장애 노인의 우울, 자존감, 수면의 질에 미치는 영향)

  • Objective : The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between the leisure experience, leisure identity, depression, and self-respect of the elderly with sleep disorders through leisure activities. Methods : The elderly with sleep disorders were applied for more than 4 weeks from March to July, 2018. Depression, self-respect, and sleep quality before and after the application of leisure activities were analyzed by the corresponding sample t test. The leisure experience, leisure identity, and change in leisure activities were analyzed by SEM(structural wearing model analysis through confirmatory factor analysis. Results : The results of this study are as follows. First, there was a significant difference in depression level before and after leisure activities (p = .000). Second, there was no significant difference in self-respect before and after leisure activities (p = .182). Third, there was a significant difference in the quality of sleep before and after leisure activities (p = .000). Fourth, the effects of leisure experience, leisure identity, and change on leisure activities showed that leisure experience influenced leisure identity and change. However, leisure identity affected depression and sleep quality among the factors of change. Conclusion : A decrease in the quality of sleep that can occur in the elderly can affect the quality of life. It was found through experiments that the leisure activities of elderly people with sleep disorder can bring about positive changes in depression level and sleep quality of the elderly.

A Study on Leisure Activities, Leisure Life Satisfaction, Perceived Health Status and Depression in the Elderly (노인의 여가활동, 여가생활만족도, 지각된 건강상태 및 우울에 관한 연구)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate leisure activities, leisure life satisfaction, perceived health status and depression in the elderly and to examine the relationships among those variables. Method: The subjects were 204 elderly visiting a senior welfare service center in G city. Data were collected from September 14 to 18 in 2009. All subjects agreed to participate and filled out the survey questionnaire after signing the consent form. Results: 1) The mean score of leisure activities was 2.81; the mean score of leisure life satisfaction was 4.14; the mean score of perceived health status was 8.92; the mean score of depression was 5.13 and 42.2% of the subjects belonged to the depression group. 2) The level of leisure activities was significantly different according to education level, religion, spouse and pocket money. The level of leisure life satisfaction was significantly different according to religion and pocket money. The level of perceived health status was significantly different according to sex, education level and pocket money. The level of depression was significantly different according to spouse and pocket money. 3) Leisure activities showed positive correlation with leisure life satisfaction and perceived health status, but showed negative correlation with depression. Conclusion: These findings showed the need for the health promotion program that increases leisure activities and leisure life satisfaction without economic burden.

  • The aim of this study was to provide the way of activation plans of leisure activities for older people through the current status and problems in welfare center for the elderly in Korea. Various social phenomena and issues have been found to occur in rapidly social-structure changes and urban civilization. Especially, processing an aging society for no preparation is one of the broader question of our country. Developing the scientific and civilization lengthening our span of life is given more leisure time than past. Unfortunately, older people could not independently stand for in their leisure, if society does not support for them. It means that they might feel the enough time to monotone life, depression and a sense of alienation. The following ideas would be expressed to the way of activation plans of elderly leisure. First, the elderly leisure facilities for leisure and publicity activities should be supplemented or strengthened. Second simple entertainment-oriented programs in the physical and psychology learning to adapt for them should be obtained through leisure activities for older people. Third, more senior recreation specialists or therapists should be educated for leisure activities. Fourth, the concept of leisure in older people's idea should be changed through the education. Fifth, people who work in the welfare center for the elderly should develop the leisure programs or activities for older people. Last the new culture of leisure concept should be constructed in our society between the two and three generation for sharing and participating the leisure.

  • The purpose of this study was to identity the types of leisure and to examine the quality of life according to them and suggest the basic resources about leisure on elderly chronic stroke. The subject of this study was elderly chronic strokes(n=80) in Gwang Ju. A total of 80 questionnaires from subjects were analyzed. The social leisure activity shows more clear and positive purpose and more higher quality of life than private leisure. But it also has limited time and require more money. Elderly chronic stroke presents passive and limited leisure activity and shows low satisfaction about leisure. But the leisures that needed more physical movements show higher quality of life. So leisure activity program which is able to support and assist the limited body function will be helpful to increase the quality of life of elderly chronic stroke.

Comparison of Health Management and Leisure Activities between Korean and Japanese Elderly in Urban-Rural Composite Areas (한국과 일본 도농복합 지역 거주 노인의 건강관리 및 여가활동 실태 비교)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare health management and leisure activities of the Korean and Japanese elderly. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional descriptive research design. A total of 149 Korean and 140 Japanese older adults living in two urban-rural composite areas participated in this research project. Data were collected using interviews with the participants. t-test and $x^2$ test were used to analyze the data. Results: Eighty eight point two percent of the Japanese perceived that their health status was good whereas 27.3% of the Koreans responded that their health status was poor. There were significant differences in types of leisure activities in art, intellectual, events, and volunteer activities between the two groups. A majority of the Japanese elderly replied that they spent some time and money for leisure activities; however, 20.2% and 27.2% of the Koreans reported that they did not spend time or money at all for leisure activities. Conclusion: The number of the Korean elderly participating leisure activities was significantly lower than Japanese participants. Developing nursing strategies using leisure programs would improve the quality of life of older adults and the quality of nursing care.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine direct and the indirect path of social leisure activity to life satisfaction of the elderly, through comprehensive approach. I analyzed data collected 531 old people in Seoul metropolitan area on SPSS 18.0 and AMOS 7.0 It was found that the participation in any social leisure activity including leisure program, voluntary activity, religious activity and bonding networks impact indirectly to the old people's life satisfaction through the leisure satisfaction and loneliness. However, only one activity, voluntary activity, impacted directly to life satisfaction. The leisure satisfaction and loneliness played partial-mediation role between voluntarily activity and life satisfaction. From the results of this study, we can know the policy to life satisfaction for the elderly in aging society and the strategies to manage the leisure programs in social welfare agencies for the elderly.

A Study on the Correlation between the Types of Leisure Activity and Depression in the Elderly - in Bukgu District, Daegu City - (노인의 우울증과 여가활동의 상관성에 관한 연구 - 대구시 북구를 중심으로 -)

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation between the types of leisure activity and Korean form of geriatric depression score in the elderly. Methods: We surveyed elderly (>60 years old) people who participated in leisure activities using interviews in Bukgu district, Daegu city. Data collection was performed from 1 - 31 May, 2008. The data was analyzed with SPSS 12.0 program, which was used for descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation analysis. Results: Common leisure activities scored 'often' and 'very often' were family conversations, offspring visiting, eating out, plant cultivation, entertainment, conversation, walking or jogging, and TV or radio. It was investigated at the rate of 19.2% in the moderate depression and 8.3% in the severely depression. Depression positively associated with newspaper or magazine, family conversation, offspring visiting, social service, movie & theater, exercise and tour. Conclusion: Most elderly people surveyed indicated they were depressed, which should recommend significant leisure activities for elderly to reduce depression in Bukgu district, Daegu city.

The Correlation between Cognition, Depression and Leisure Activity of Elderly People (65세 이상 노인의 인지기능, 우울 및 여가활동 간의 관련성)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the correlation between cognition, depression and leisure activity in elderly people above 65 years of age, and to improve their health and quality of life by providing baseline data for occupational therapy intervention. This investigation was performed on 118 elderly people above 65 years of age who lived in local community and two senior welfare centers. In order to collect the data, we used MMSE-K, KDS, Questionnaire for leisure activity. The depression of elderly people was negatively correlated with their cognition(p<.01) and leisure activity(p<.001), whereas cognition was positively correlated with their leisure activity(p<.01). In conclusion, the correlation between cognition, depression and leisure activity of elderly people appeared statistically significant. Therefore, leisure activity program should be designed through additional research and effectively provided in nursing home and community senior welfare center to prevent depression increase and cognitive decline.

A Comparative Study on Vascular Conditions and Stress on Leisure Activity in the Elderly (노인의 여가활동에 대한 혈관상태와 스트레스 비교연구)

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to find out the stress of vascular conditions and leisure activities for the elderly and the effect of stress problems on the vascular conditions of the elderly. Methods : The study surveyed 172 elderly people, conducted a validity and reliability analysis to organize items of leisure activities, analyzed vascular conditions and stress for leisure activities, and conducted a regression analysis to analyze stress factors affecting the blood vessel conditions of the elderly. Results : First, there was a significant difference in comparing the average value of vascular conditions for leisure activities in the elderly (p=.012) and sports activity was the most stable in vascular conditions. Second, there was a significant difference in comparing the average value of stress for leisure activities of the elderly (p=.035) and rest and other activities were higher than other activities. Third, the effect of stress problems in older people on vascular conditions has been shown to be influenced by financial difficulties and health problems. Conclusion : Leisure activities in older people can act as a factor in changing the quality of life. Older adults can expect improvement of vascular conditions and reduction of stress through leisure activities, especially sports activities have a high relationship of vascular conditions, and rest and other activities have a high relationship with stress. As a result, this study confirmed the importance of selecting and continuing participation in leisure activities for the elderly.
