  • I studied a distance education model for English learning on the Internet. Basic WWW files, that contain courseware, are constructed with HTML, and functions, which are required in learning, are implemented with Java. Students and educators can access the preferred unit composed of the appropriate text, voice and image data by using a WWW browser at any time. The education system supports the automatic generation facility of English problems to practice reading and writing by making good use of the courseware data or various English text resources located on the Internet. Our system has functions to manage and control the flow of distance learning and to offer interaction between students and the system in a distributed environment. Educators can manage students' learning and can immediately be aware of who is attending and who is quitting the lesson in virtual space. Also, students and educators in different places can communicate and discuss a topic through the server. I implemented these functions, which are required in a client/server environment of distance education, with the use of Java. The URL for this system is "http://park.taegu-e.ac.kr" in the name of GAIA.

  • In this critique, the mission of child/family professionals is reidentified as educators, researchers, and practitionars. In order to more effectively assist child and family in coping with a changing society, educators need to give serious attention to such issues as self-formation for the individuals and human relations for the families. The missons of researchers are shifted from quantitative to both qualitative and quantitative emphases. The micro - and macro - intervention are seen as primary two roles for the practitioners. Implications of these missions are discussed in terms of specific suggetions for the future direction. Consequently, challenges and opportunities abound for child/family professionals.

  • Objective: Despite the recommendation of the use of high-fidelity simulation (HFS) in interprofessional education (IPE), there is little known about its work for nursing students. Thus, this study aimed to explore nurse educators' perceptions and experiences in developing and implementing the HFS-based IPE for nursing and medical students. Methods: This study used a case study, using reflective filed notes. Results: Nursing educators perceived HFS as an effective educational approach to engaging nursing and medical students actively in interprofessional collaborative practice (ICP) experiences and in evaluating their actual performance on it. In terms of their perspectives on the elements necessary for effective HFS-based IPE, four themes were identified: collaborative learning, co-facilitating debriefing, leadership commitment and active faculty involvement.

  • This study examines differences in perception between applicants and admissions committee members regarding evaluation criteria for admission to career and technical high schools in Seoul. This investigation, based on "The survey on policy for career and technical high school admissions," seeks to explore and consider the various criteria for selecting and evaluating students. The target populations of the survey were the educators in charge of admission and freshmen in Seoul career and technical high schools. We report three major findings, with the first pertaining to the existing criteria and policies for admission to career and technical high schools. While educators agreed with the intent and reasoning behind the school's competitive spots, they were overall dissatisfied with the selection method and the lack of a requirement for academic transcripts. Matriculated students, in comparison, expressed greater satisfaction with the existing criteria for admission. Secondly, when assessing the importance of various evaluation components in an application, educators viewed the interview and attendance record as the most valuable components of the application, followed by future plans, personal statement, volunteer work, and portfolio, in order of decreasing importance. Students ranked attendance record, interview, personal statement, portfolio, future plans, and volunteer work as most to least important components of their application. Thus, students regarded the personal statement and portfolios as being of higher priority than did the educators. The last major finding pertained to students' rationale for applying and educators' selection criteria. At the time of application, students focused on aptitude and job prospects after graduation, while educators valued personality and competence. In summary, the applicants' viewpoints and actions aligned much more closely with the mission of the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education than did those of the educators in charge of admission. Thus, in order to establish a consensus between the policy and mission of career and technical high schools, each career and technical high school should clarify the exact criteria for their ideal candidate. There is also a need to bridge the gap in perception between the applicants and educators regarding selection strategy, to establish a harmonized evaluation criteria. These goals are necessary to attract and recruit talented, bright individuals who will meet the demands of today's society.

The questionnaires were mailed to 245 health centers and 148 (60.4%) questionnaires were returned. 91% of the health centers had breastfeeding education for pregnant women. 66% of them operated breastfeeding education as one part of other health programs. About 76% of supervisors and 64% of educators were the nurses. The teaching methods frequently used were lectures (30.5%), giving out booklets and leaflets (22.6%), demonstration and practice (21.5%), personal counseling (13.3%), and others. The teaching materials used were materials of outside speakers (39.7%), materials of development oneself (19.0%), materials of academic association or institute (14.8%), and others. The subjects which educators taught were the benefits of breastfeeding (16.7%), breastfeeding techniques (15.8%), caring for breasts before and after delivery (15.1%), nutritional management for lactating women (14.2%), coping strategies for the difficult situation of breastfeeding (13.3%), and others. Those were different from each other according to the educators' general characteristics. Success factors of education were increased motivation for breastfeeding (52.8%), practice (22.6%), professional's lecture (11.3%) and others. The failure factors of education were the ineffectiveness of the lecture method (69.2%), lack of education for supporters (15.4%) and lack of standardized education (15.4%). The most important barrier of education was the lack of a standardized breastfeeding educational programs (43.9%). The most effective teaching methods that educators thought were demonstration and practice (24.0%). The educators thought they need the tools and space for practice (28.2%), a standardized breastfeeding educational program (26.9%), and the human resources (24.4%) for effective education. Subjects that educators thought important for education were the breastfeeding techniques, benefits of breastfeeding, caring for breasts before and after delivery, nutritional management for lactating women, coping strategies for the difficult situation of breastfeeding, rooming system after delivery, ways to assess mother's milk quantity, introducing successful cases of breastfeeding in rank order. To promote the effectiveness of breastfeeding education, standardized breastfeeding educational programs, diverse teaching materials, space and tools, and human resources are needed.
