  • Most of the train brakes depends on friction between wheels and tracks. This requires braking force reduced in order not to cause wheel slides since the friction decreases as the train speed increases and consequently results in extension of braking distance. The braking system called 'Linear eddy current brake' or simply' Eddy current brake' is a braking system for making a brake independent from friction, which consists in creating electromagnet by coiling around shoes attached. to bogies; having the shoes above the tracks approached to the tracks upon acknowledgement of a braking command; and authorizing braking force that is irrelevant to friction through magnetic repulsion between electromagnet attached to the tracks and train set by the use of the electromagnet's magnet field characteristics. An electromagnetic attraction braking system that consists in pressing pole shoes attached to bogies against the tracks by using electromagnet's attraction force is called 'Electromagnetic track brake' or simply 'Track brake'. This paper has been prepared in purpose of studying technological tendencies of the eddy current brake and the track brake so that it can be utilized as fundamental data for commissioning Korean high-speed trains with the eddy current brake hereafter.

  • A warm eddy was continuously observed to the east of Sokcho, Korea from March to June 1992. This warm eddy had been formed in 1991, wintered to the east of Sokcho, and moved northward a little during April-June 1992. The diameter and the depth of the eddy were respectively about 160 km and about 330 m in March. The homogeneous (mixed) layer of 10$^{\circ}C$ and 34.2 psu water was found at the upper layer with the maximum size of about 130 km and maximum depth of about 230 m in March. The size of the eddy and homogeneous layer decreased in June. Maximum current velocity of the eddy was about 65 cm/s at the surface layer and exceeded20 cm/s at 200 m depth. It is shown that the flow field was nearly in geostrophic balance, but there was a little difference in the current velocity between ADCP and geostrophic calculation in June. The surface velocity of the East Korean Warm Current(EKWC) was 50∼70cm/s which was very similar to the northward current velocity of the eddy. The EKWC water appeared in the layer upper than 200 m depth.

  • Seawater movement analyses and dye diffusion experiments were conducted to understand the characteristics of eddy diffusion in the southwest coastal zone of Korea. The findings indicate that pollutants entering the study area were most influenced by tidal currents and showed temporal and spatial variations according to the turbulent characteristics of the tidal current. Pollutants entering the study area are likely to travel a distance of approximately 2 km (within 1 h) following the direction of the tidal currents and show a spreading distance (diameter of the diffusion area) of within 10% of the travel distance (within 200 m). The dispersion of the diffusion area is expected to increase in proportion to the elapsed time raised to a power of 1.19 to 1.23. The results are expected to provide a basis for using the eddy diffusion coefficient as a temporally variable value (previously assumed to be a constant based on empirical data), thereby contributing to improving the predictive accuracy of ocean diffusion models.

  • Energetic mesoscale eddies in the East Sea (ES) associated with strong mesoscale variability impacting circulation and environments were statistically characterized by analyzing satellite altimeter data collected during 1993-2017 and in-situ data obtained from four cruises conducted between 2015 and 2017. A total of 1,008 mesoscale eddies were detected, tracked, and identified and then classified into 27 groups characterized by mean lifetime (L, day), amplitude (H, m), radius (R, km), intensity per unit area (EI, $cm^2/s^2/km^2$), ellipticity (e), eddy kinetic energy (EKE, TJ), available potential energy (APE, TJ), and direction of movement. The center, boundary, and amplitude of mesoscale eddies identified from satellite altimeter data were compared to those from the in-situ observational data for the four cases, yielding uncertainties in the center position of 2-10 km, boundary position of 10-20 km, and amplitude of 0.6-5.9 cm. The mean L, H, R, EI, e, EKE, and APE of the ES mesoscale eddies during the total period are $95{\pm}104$ days, $3.5{\pm}1.5cm$, $39{\pm}6km$, $0.023{\pm}0.017cm^2/s^2/km^2$, $0.72{\pm}0.07$, $23{\pm}21TJ$, and $588{\pm}250TJ$, respectively. The ES mesoscale eddies tend to move following the mean surface current rather than propagating westward. The southern groups (south of the subpolar front) have a longer L, larger H, R, and higher EKE, APE; and stronger EI than those of the northern groups and tend to move a longer distance following surface currents. There are exceptions to the average characteristics, such as the quasi-stationary groups (the Wonsan Warm, Wonsan Cold, Western Japan Basin Warm, and Northern Subpolar Frontal Cold Eddy groups) and short-lived groups with a relatively larger H, higher EKE, and APE and stronger EI (the Yamato Coastal Warm, Central Yamato Warm, and Eastern Japan Basin Coastal Warm eddy groups). Small eddies in the northern ES hardly resolved using the satellite altimetry data only, were not identified here and discussed with potential over-estimations of the mean L, H, R, EI, EKE, and APE. This study suggests that the ES mesoscale eddies 1) include newly identified groups such as the Hokkaido and the Yamato Rise Warm Eddies in addition to relatively well-known groups (e.g., the Ulleung Warm and the Dok Cold Eddies); 2) have a shorter L; smaller H, R, and lower EKE; and stronger EI and higher APE than those of the global ocean, and move following surface currents rather than propagating westward; and 3) show large spatial inhomogeneity among groups.

  • Beacuse intergranular attack (IGA), one of the locallized corrosion forms occurring on steam generator tubes, can not be fabricated by an electric discharge machining method, there are few data for the eddy current test (ECT) characteristics of IGA. In this paper, the characteristics of eddy current signals are evaluated using nonexpanded tubes with IGA defects formed in 0.1 M sodium tetrathionate solution at $40^{\circ}C$. The detectability and sizing accuracy of IGA were discussed in terms of the coil type and frequency of the ECT probes.

  • Two kinds of eddy current probes are mainly used to perform the steam generator tube integrity assesment in NPPs. The first one is the bobbin probe using for inspection of volumetric defect like a fretting wear. The second one is the rotating probe using for inspection of non-volumetric defect like a crack. The eddy current probe is one of the essential components which consist of the whole eddy current examination system, and provides a decisive data for the tube integrity in accordance with acceptance criteria described in specific procedures. The design of ECT probe is especially important to improve examination results because the quality of acquired ECT data is depended on the probe design characteristics, such as coil geometry, electrical properties, operation frequency. In this study, it is analyzed that the coil winding number of differential bobbin probe affects the electrical properties of the probe. Eddy current bobbin probes for the steam generator tubes in NPPs are designed and fabricated according to the results. Experiment shows that the change in coil winding number has much effects on the optimum inspection frequency determined by the tube geometry and material. Therefore, the coil winding number in bobbin probe is very important in the probe design. In this study, a basis of the coil winding number for the eddy current bobbin probe design for steam generator tubes in NPPs is established.

  • The wake effects behind wind turbines were investigated by using data from a Met Mast tower and the SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system for a wind turbine. The results of the wake investigations and predicted values for the velocity deficit based on the eddy viscosity model were compared with the turbulence intensity from the Lange model. As a result, the velocity deficit and turbulence intensity of the wake increased as the free stream wind speed decreased. In addition, the magnitude of the velocity deficit for the center of the wake using the eddy viscosity model was overestimated while the turbulence intensity from the Lange model showed similarities with measured values.

  • This paper investigates LES of turbulent combustion flow based on 2-scalar flamelet approach, where a G-equation and a conserved scalar equation simulate a propagation of premixed flame and a diffusion combustion process, respectively. The turbulent SGS modeling on these flamelet combustion approach is also researched. These LES models are applied to an industrial flows in a full scale gasturbine combustor with premixed and non-premixed flames. The numerical results predict the characteristics of experiment temperature profiles. Unsteady features of complex flames in combustor are also visualized.
