  • For the slope stability and revegetation of retaining wall, Eco-Stone was built beside a newly constructed road in August, 2002. Eco-Stone blocks were constructed in 4 different combinations of irrigation and soil types. Within the Eco-Stone, planted were 6 species such as Forsythia koreana, Rhododendron mucronulatum, Spiraea prunifolia var. simpliciflora, Rhododendron sp. Euonymus japonica, and Aster koraiensis. Shoot growth was greater on common soils than at a better soil treatment for Forsythia koreana(P<0.01) and Spiraea prunifolia var. simpliciflora(P<0.05), while there were no significant differences for the other species. Biomass increment of the planted species also did not show significant differences between irrigation types, except Rhododendron sp. and Aster koraiensis of which biomass was higher under irrigation than at no irrigation for common soils. Most of the planted individuals were alive, showing survival ratio of 90~97% with no significant differences among treatment blocks. These results imply that the Eco-Stone can be used economically for slope stability and revegetation instead of concrete blocks, without a specific soil and irrigation requirement.

  • The retaining wall is a structure which was made for changing land form in many construction. The first role of the retaining wall is to maintain the slope stability. But recently, the amount of retaining wall have been increasing because of the expansion of construction works and the amenity of urban environment have been decreasing because of environmental destruction and the scenic heterogeneity. So we should consider the slope stability and ecological stability at the same time. The purpose of this study is to develop the retaining wall revegetation technology using the Eco-Stone, the structure of co-satisfying which included the slope stability and the revegetation effect. Eco-Stone is a structure which has high stability for earth pressure, settlement and drainage. And cost and term of construction works also have been decreased. Eco-Stone structure is one of factors composing the ecological network which is harmonize with surrounding environment. In this way, it is expected that the ecological habitats of various species would be restored.

  • Stone papers made of inorganic filler and plastic polymer do not use pulp, which is the main raw material of existing papers, so they contribute to the preservation of nature and can be used as more eco-friendly materials when they have biodegradability. Since most stone papers are manufactured by hot extrusion, the amount of ceramic fillers and related physical properties are limited to control manufacturing workability. In this study, the stone paper composition was prepared in a liquid form using solvents, so that there was little limitation on the amount of ceramic filler added and it was also easy to add additives to control biodegradability. They were fabricated from eco-friendly raw materials using waste oyster shells as an inorganic filler and (recyclable) PVC materials as an organic binder. After making a solution using common solvents for PVC, inorganic filler and cellulose to impart biodegradability were mixed and processed into sheets to prepare solvent-based stone papers, and their paper properties were evaluated.

  • Recently, as interest in environmental issues increases, minimizing carbon dioxide generated during cement manufacturing is a problem to be solved. In order to solve such a problem, it is required to use an industrial by-product of recycled aggregate, blast furnace slag, and circulating fluidized bed boiler fly ash to replace it on the basis of geopolymer(=cementless). This study examines the characteristics of eco-friendly artificial stone according to the mixing ratio of geopolymer-based recycled aggregate. As a result of the experiment, when the addition rate of the alkali stimulant was 15% and the mixing ratio of the circulating aggregate was 70%, the flexural strength and compressive strength were the highest. Density and water absorption decreased as density of circulating aggregates increased and water absorption increased. However, when the mixing ratio of the circulating aggregate exceeded 70%, the flexural strength and compressive strength decreased. Therefore, in order to obtain strengths meeting the KS standards, the mixing ratio of recycled aggregate was set to 70%, and artificial stone was manufactured using industrial by-products.

  • Eco-friendly material and implementation methods have become important along with the existing standardized maintenance concept for the irrigation and flood control. However, the intrinsic function of the hydraulic structure is water supply and disaster prevention. Therefore, the material and work methods should be considered both eco-friendliness, durability and safety which are prerequisite elements to maintain the engineering function. In this study eco-friendly material and work methods would be classified into the vegetation based system, eco-friendly concrete system and stone-material system according to the characteristics of material. The quality standard for durability followed KS specification and related regulations. The quality standard for safety and eco-friendliness was set after literature review, and the database was developed using the standard. The structure applicable to onsite - the eco-friendly material and work method were classified based on the function and material of the hydraulic structure. Finally, database has been established for convenient management and selection of the proper material and work method. The eco-friendly material and work method could be searched easily for the convenience of the users, and the web-based data system has been developed for continuous registration of the material and work methods to be developed in the future.
