The Relationship between Risk of Eating Disorder and Severity of State-Trait Anxiety (일부 대학생의 상태-특성 불안 정도와 식사 장애 위험 정도의 관계)

  • This quantitative study was investigated to examine the relationship between severity of state-trait anxiety and disordered eating patterns in some university students. This study used a cross-sectional study design. Total 347 students participated in this study (88 male and 259 female) among three universities. The assessment of eating disorder was conducted by Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26), a score of >or=20 identified individuals likely to have an eating disorder, including anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Scores of healthy dietary behaviors were obtained by self-assessment instrument on healthy diet scale(20-item questionnaire), and severity of state-trait anxiety was calculated by state-trait anxiety inventory(Total 40- item questionnaire). In groups for each state anxiety and trait anxiety, there were divided between 50 percentile point of cumulatived scores of state anxiety and trait anxiety in all subjects. Linear regression analysis showed overall significant difference between dietary patterns(anorexia nervosa and healthy dietary behaviors) and severity of state-trait anxiety in all sex. Our results indicated that severity of state-trait anxiety may marked eating disorder symptomatology on dimensions of eating disorder prevention.

The Relationship among Dance-majoring High School Students Narcissism, Self-management and Eating Disorder (무용전공고등학생의 자기애와 자기관리 및 섭식장애의 관계)

  • To investigate and verity the relationship among dance-majoring high school students' narcissistic trait, self-management and eating disorder, this study collected samples from 200 students by selecting high school students who are majoring in dance in arts high schools. For data analysis, this study used t-test, one way ANOVA and multiple regression analysis. As a result of analyzing the relationship among dance-majoring high school students' narcissistic trait, self-management and eating disorder, this study produced following results. First, results of investigation on the difference in narcissistic trait, self-management and eating disorder according to individual characteristics, eating disorder differed significantly according to the gender, and self-management also showed a meaningful difference according to grade. Second, results of analysis on the effect of dance-majoring high school students' narcissistic trait on self-management show that self-initiative narcissistic trait exerted a positive (+) effect on all sub-factors of self-management, and other-dependent narcissistic trait turned out to have a positive (+) effect on the training management. Third, as a result of investigating the effect of dance-majoring high school students' perfectionism inclination on their eating disorder, other-dependent narcissistic trait exerts a positive (+) effect on sitomania.

A Study on Eating Behavior, Depression, Anger, Anger Expression and BAS/BIS in Adolescent Women (청소년기 여성의 섭식행동과 우울, 분노.분노표현 및 개인적 특성[BAS/BIS]에 관한 연구)

  • Purpose: The descriptive correlational study was designed to examine the relationship of eating behavior to depression, trait anger, anger expression, Behavior Activation System(BAS) and Behavior Inhibition System(BIS) in adolescent women. Method: 437 women aged 15 to 18 years were recruited from two high schools located in Seoul, Korea. The instruments used were SCL's depression scale, Spielberger's state trait anger expression inventory-Korean version for trait anger and anger expression, the Korean-BAS/BIS scale for behavior activation system and behavior inhibition system, and Eating Attitude Test(EAT-26) for eating behavior. Results: The score of EAT significantly correlated with depression, trait anger, anger expression, BAS and BIS. The EAT score also had a significant relationship with anger-in and anger-out. Depression only correlated with the dieting among factors of EAT, Trait anger, anger-in and anger-out showed a significant correlation with EAT factors such as dieting and oral control. BAS significantly correlated with dieting; whereas, BIS revealed a relationship with bulimia/food preoccupation. Conclusion: Based on this results, various variables need to be included for a nursing intervention program leading to healthy diet behaviors of adolescent women.

The Relation of Anger and Anger Expression to Eating Disorders in Late School-Age Children (학령기 후기 아동의 분노, 분포표현에 따른 섭식장애)

  • Purpose: This cross-sectional study was designed to identify anger-expression types in late school-age children and to investigate the relation of anger and the anger-expression type to their eating disorders. Method: Two hundred fifty four children in elementary school were recruited from 14 to 25, April, 2008. The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, cluster analysis, t-test, ANOVA, and Tukey's multiple comparison test. Result: Three anger-expression types in late school-age children were found; Anger-in/out, Anger-control, and Low anger-expression types. Children frequently using the anger-out/in type among the three types and with a higher trait anger reported higher eating disorders. Particularly trait anger and unhealthy anger expression type were linked to eating disorders. Conclusion: This study suggests that a specific anger management program needs to be developed for late school-age children with high trait anger and frequently using the anger out/in expression type and Anger-control type than low anger-expression types. Further research needs to be done with large samples and discussed in terms of the role of gender in eating disorders.

Factors Related to Breakfast Eating Habit of Woman's College Students (일개 여자대학 학생의 아침식사 습관과 관련요인)

  • Purpose: This study is descriptive research that confirms breakfast eating habit of woman's college students and related factors. Methods: This investigation took place in August 2010 and was participated 142 students of one woman's college which located in a large city. The contents of the questionnaire consists of general trait, diet trait, life patterns and health states. Results: According to the results of uni-variate analysis, the significant variables of breakfast eating habit are: Recognition of importance of breakfast, spare time before attendance, her parents's breakfast eating habit, times of snack, times of eating out and index of food life style. But, according to the results of multi-variate analysis, the number of the significant variables became narrow and they were: Recognition of importance of breakfast, spare time before attendance and her father's breakfast eating habit. Conclusion: Finally, it can be said that the breakfast eating habit of woman's college student is related to recognition of importance of breakfast, spare time before attendance and her father's breakfast habit strongly. It is necessary to emphasis on the recognition of the importance of breakfast and concerns of parents for breakfast eating habit to improve the regularity of breakfast eating habit for woman's college students' health.

Internalization of the Sociocultural Attitudes, Body Shape Satisfaction, Anger and Eating Attitudes in College Women (여대생의 외모에 대한 사회문화적 가치 내재화, 체형만족도, 분노 및 식이태도에 관한 연구)

  • Purpose: The descriptive study was designed to examine the relationship of eating attitudes to the internalization of sociocultural attitudes, body shape satisfaction, anger and anger expression in college women. Method: 247 women were recruited from one college located in Seoul, Korea. The instruments used were the Internalization subscale of SATAQ-3R, BSQ for body shape satisfaction, Spielberger's state trait anger expression inventory-Korean version for anger and anger expression, and the Eating Attitude Test(EAT-26) for eating attitudes. Results: The score of EAT significantly correlated with internalization, state anger, body shape satisfaction, and anger expression except trait anger. The significant predictors of eating attitudes in college women were body shape satisfaction and anger expression, explaining 55% of the variance in eating attitudes. Conclusion: This study showed that body shape satisfaction is an important predictor for an eating disorder. Therefore, various programs for cognitive changes correcting the understanding about body and weight need to be developed in the future.

A path analysis of factors influencing eating problem among young female adults (성인초기여성의 섭식장애에 영향을 미치는 요인에 관한 경로 분석)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze factors influencing eating problems among young female adults. Methods: Participants were 193 young female adults aged 19 ~ 29 years who were recruited in August 2017. Four variables related to eating problems in young female adults, including body image dissatisfaction, self-esteem, trait anger, and depression, were measured using reliable instruments. Data were analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 21.0 program and Amos 24.0 for descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficients, and path analysis. Results: The mean for eating problems in young female adults was 8.99, and 9.8% of subjects were classified as high risk with eating problems. Modified model demonstrated good model fit (${\chi}^2$/df 0.47, GFI 0.99, AGFI 0.99, NFI 0.99, SRMR 0.022, RMSEA 0.001). Path analysis showed that body image dissatisfaction had the greatest direct effect on eating problems. Depression did not have a direct effect on eating problems, whereas it had indirect effects on eating problems through body image dissatisfaction as the mediating factor. Self-esteem had direct effects on depression and indirect effects on eating problems through depression and body image dissatisfaction as mediating factors. Trait anger had direct effects on depression and body image dissatisfaction and indirect effects on eating problems through depression and body image dissatisfaction as mediating factors. These factors accounted for 46% of the total variance, and the fit indices of the model satisfied the criteria of fitness. Conclusion: The results of this study reveal the important role of body dissatisfaction and psychological factors such as self-esteem, trait anger, and depression on eating problems. These factors influencing eating problems should be considered when developing programs to improve eating problems in young female adults.

Weight Control History according to Risk of Eating Disorder (일부 대학생의 식사 장애 위험 정도에 따른 체중 조절 방법)

  • This quantitative study was conducted to examine the relationship between weight control behaviors and disordered eating patterns in some university students. This study used a cross-sectional study design. A total of 347 students from three universities participated in this study (88 male and 259 female) Eating disorders were assessed using the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26); a score of =20 identifies individuals who likely have an eating disorder, including anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. A score for healthy dietary behaviors was obtained by self-assessment on a healthy diet scale (20-item questionnaire), and the severity of any state-trait anxiety was calculated by the state-trait anxiety inventory (40-item questionnaire). In the analyzed results, the percentage of participants with experience of weight control was 58% in male and 73% in female. The subjects with a high risk of an eating disorder (score of =20 of EAT-26) were 44.3% ($mean{\pm}S.D;\;18.9{\pm}13.4$) of the males, and 57.9% ($mean{\pm}S.D;\;23.2{\pm}11.6$) of the females. Higher Body Mass Index (BMI) was significantly related with an increased risk for an eating disorder in females, but not in males. In the group who had attempted weight control of all types, there was a severe risk of an eating disorder. Increased eating disorder risk was significantly related with weight control behaviors such as a higher number of attempts at weight control, having used medication, having experienced side effects, and having experienced disease for both sexes. Therefore, the results of this paper showed that detrimental behaviors of weight control are connected to an increased risk of eating disorders. Consequently, education regarding the correct, behaviors of weight control is necessary to prevent eating disorders in adolescents.

Study on Association between Risk of Eating Disorder and Self-Esteem on Body Image (일부 대학생의 체형 만족 정도와 식사 장애 위험 정도의 관계 연구)

  • This Quantitative study was investigated to examine the relationship between self-esteem on body image and disordered eating patterns in some university students. This study used a cross-sectional study design. Total 347 students participated in this study (88 male and 259 female) among three universities. The assessment of eating disorder was conducted by Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26), a score of >or=20 identified individuals likely have an eating disorder, including anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Ideal body weight and current body weight were completed with self-evaluation. A distorted body image was independently related to the eating problem in the Logistic regression analysis. There were stronger relationships between their EAT-26 scores and their expected weight changes and weight control behaviors. Compared with the men, women showed highly wishful to loss for current body weight. In the relationship between score of EAT-26 and BMI distance by sex, levels of eating disorder showed linearly elevated toward increased BMI distance (Ideal BMI-Current BMI) (F-value=18.794, p<0.0001) in women, but there were not significant in men (F-value=2.028, p>0.05). In estimate on state-trait anxiety inventory according to quartile of BMI distance by sex, levels of state-trait anxiety were not significant difference by degree of body dissatisfaction in all sex. In addition, higher distorted body image was significantly increased numbers of weight control method and experience of side effects in female, but there were not showed significant relation between two variables in male.

Changes of Appetite and Eating Behavior in Bipolar Disorder Patients : Measurement with General-Food Craving Questionnaire-Trait and the Drug-Related Eating Behavior Questionnaire (양극성 장애 환자에서 나타나는 식욕 및 섭식 행동의 특성 : 일반적 음식갈망-특질척도(G-FCQ-T)와 약물 관련 섭식행동 설문지(DR-EBQ)를 이용한 평가)

  • Objectives In the current study, we quantitatively estimated changes in appetite and eating behavior of bipolar disorder patients during the pharmacotherapy. We also investigated their contribution to the weight gain and their association with specific food-craving characteristics of the patients. Methods Subjects included forty-one bipolar disorder patients and fifty-six controls. Currently sustained natures of food craving were assessed using the General-Food Craving Questionnaire-Trait (G-FCQ-T) and changes in appetite and eating behavior were measured using the Drug-Related Eating Behavior Questionnaire (DR-EBQ). Results Compared to the control group, the patients' group showed significantly higher body mass index (t=2.028, p=0.045). The patients' group had significantly higher 'Preoccupation with food' factor score of G-FCQ-T (p=0.016) than that of the control group. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis showed that only 'preoccupation with food' factor independently predicted psychotropic medication-induced appetite change. Conclusions Appetite change while receiving psychotropic medication seems to be related to the weight-gain and associated with craving natures of 'preoccupation with food' in bipolar disorder. Appetite and/or eating behavioral changes measured by G-FCQ-T and DR-EBQ could be regarded as an important mediating factor in future studies exploring biological mechanisms of weight gain related with pharmacotherapy for bipolar disorder.
