  • Aims: This overview summarizes the existing evidence on acupuncture for cancer-related pain. Methods: Literature searches were conducted in 7 databases. All clinical studies of acupuncture, electroacupuncture, ear acupuncture and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) in cancer patients with the main outcome measure of pain were included. Results: Of the 8 studies included, one high quality randomized clinical trial (RCT) of ear acupuncture showed statistically significant pain relief in comparison with placebo ear acupuncture. All the other studies were either non-blinded (n = 2) or uncontrolled clinical trials (n = 5). Most investigations suffered from methodological flaws such as inadequate study design, poor reporting of results, small sample size and overestimation of the results. Conclusions: The current evidence does not support the use of acupuncture as an adjunctive analgesic method for cancer patients. Only one high quality RCT showed promising results thus warranting further investigation into this under-researched area.

  • The importance of measurement of health-related quality of life (HRQL) cannot be overemphasized. However, efforts to implement HRQL measurement often fail because of differences in definition and insufficient information about available measures. In this paper, many available HRQL measures are reviewed, which have been designed for, or frequently used with, people with cancer in order to aid in the evaluation of effects of oriental medicine on cancer patients. A total of 28 articles were selected from three different databases. The selected articles were analyzed according to three aspects of application of the Korean version of HRQL measures, namely generic, disease specific and symptoms related instruments. Nine HRQL measures are completed with Korean validation and data collection under contact and permission of the author. However, research studies that reported data on quality of life (QOL) in cancer patients treated with oriental medicine were wholly lacking. It is recommended that further studies be performed, using methods of data collection whose validity and reliability has been confirmed.

  • Objective : This study aimed to investigate differential cancer incidence among Sasangin comparing to healthy subjects in the Republic of Korea. Methods : The medical records of 169 patients who had taken diagnosis of Sasang constitution from October 2004 to January 2007 at the East-West Cancer Center in Dunsan Oriental Hospital of Daejeon University were reviewed. Diagnosis was done by Questionnaire for Sasang Constitution ClassificationII (QSCCII). Results : Among the 169 patients, 37.9%, 22.5% and 39.6% belonged to Soyangin, Taeumin and Soeumin, respectively. This is significantly different from the distribution rate of Sasang in amonghealthy subjects (29.1%, 46.9% and 24.0% respectively to Soyangin, Taeumin and Soeumin). This pattern appeared in a similar way among individual cancer analysis: breast cancer (37.5%, 21.9%, 40.6%), colon cancer (41.7%, 20.8% 37.5%), and HCC (35.0%, 20.0%, 45.0%). Stomach cancer typically showed remarkable incidence in Soeumin as high as 50.0% and lung cancer showed in Soyangin as high 46.7%, but it didn't have statistical significance. The mean age of 50.9 years was higher than for healthy people (46.3). Conclusion : Sasang distribution of cancer patients is different from that of healthy subjects. Further study is needed on individual cancers.

  • We report a case of an 85-year old man with an adenocarcinoma of the rectosigmoid colon (clinical stage II). Though tumor was resectable, the patient was considered to be inoperable because of old age and comorbidities such as asthma, diabetes and old myocardial infarction. He wanted to receive alternative care, so he was exclusively treated with standardized Allegern-removed Rhus verniciflua Stokes (aRVS) extract and other herbal medicine such as BOJUNGIKGI-TANG GAMIBANG. During 18 months, he has shown good performance status without transfusion. This report suggests that herbal treatment including standardized aRVS for rectosigmoid colon cancer could be an alternative treatment option when it is unabled to be treated by surgical resection.

  • The study was designed to test anti-platelet effect and find out anti-platelet mechanism of extract from Gamisopunghwalheol-tang in vitro. The extract was investigated for the inhibition against the aggregation of human platelet suspensions induced from collagen by aggregometer. And also the extract was investigated for the inhibition against the aggregation of human platelet suspensions who is taking aspirin or clopidogrel induced from collagen by aggregometer. In collagen-induced platelet aggregation test, the extract significantly inhibited collagen-induced platelet aggregation in a concentration-dependent manner(p<0.05). The extract significantly inhibited collagen-induced platelet aggregation of human platelet who is taking aspirin or clopidogrel ing 0 mg/ml concentration(p<0.05). And the extract inhibited more ingpatients who is taking aspirin. These results show that the extract from Gamisopunghwalheol-tang has anti-platelet aggregation effect.
