영월 및 인접 지역에서 발생한 지진에 대한 고찰 (Earthquakes occurred around the Yeongweol area)

  • The December 13, 1996 Yeongweol earthquake of magnitude 4.5 was felt almost everywhere in southern part of the Korean Peninsula and Cheju Island, even though not feld in Tsushima Island at other places in Japan near to Korea. Production lines of semiconductor disk in electronic engineering companies of Gumi manufacturing complex were seriously affected by the shake of this earthquake. Total 17 earthquakes of magnitude 4 or above occurred within the area of 50km radius from Yeongweol in the period from the year 1400 to 1996. This group of earthquakes includes 12 events of magnitude 5.0 or above and 3 events of magnitude 6.0 or above. Among these events, 13 earthquakes are historical events of years 1400-1904. Most of them occurred in 15-16 centuries. The February 21, 1596 Jungseon-Pyeongchang event of magnitude 6.5 is the largest one up to now in the area. There are four instrumental earthquakes (years 1905-1996) of magnitude 4.0 or above in this area. An earthquake of magnitude 4.4 occurred on 5th of November, 1919 at almost the same place as the December 13, 1996 earthquake of magnitude 4.5. Thus this event is preceded with the previous one by 77 years.

Kern County 지진에 대한 연구 (A study of Kem County earthquake)

  • 본 연구는 한반도의 지진지체구조 특성에 부합되는 내진설계용 부지응답 스펙트럼 작성을 위한 유사지진 선정에 관한 연구이다. Seismic Moment Tensor를 이용 파형을 Inversion한 결과에 의하면 지진원 특성상, Kern Conty 지진(1952년 7월 21일, 리히터 규모 ML = 7.2)은 한반도 지진지체구조 특성에 부합되는 현실적으로 유사한 외국의 지진들 중의 하나로서, 선정된 Kern Conty 지진으로 부터 발생한 강지진동 자료를 전산처리하여 표준응답 스펙트럼과 일반적 특성을 비교하여 보는 일도 의미있는 일이라고 할 수 있다.

Distributed crack sensors featuring unique memory capability for post-earthquake condition assessment of RC structures

  • A new design of distributed crack sensors based on the topological change of transmission line cables is presented for the condition assessment of reinforced concrete (RC) structures during and immediately after an earthquake event. This study is primarily focused on the performance of cable sensors under dynamic loading, particularly a feature that allows for some "memory" of the crack history of an RC member. This feature enables the post-earthquake condition assessment of structural members such as RC columns, in which the earthquake-induced cracks are closed immediately after an earthquake event due to gravity loads, and are visually undetectable. Factors affecting the onset of the feature were investigated experimentally with small-scale RC beams under cyclic loading. Test results indicated that both crack width and the number of loading cycles were instrumental in the onset of the memory feature of cable sensors. Practical issues related to dynamic acquisition with the sensors are discussed. The sensors were proven to be fatigue resistant from shake table tests of RC columns. The sensors continued to show useful performance after the columns can no longer support additional loads.

A STUDY OF THE HISTORICAL EARTHQUAKE CATALOG AND GUTENBERG-RICHTER PARAMETER VALUES OF THE KOREAN PENINSULA

  • The KIER's Korean historical earthquake catalog was revised for MMI${\geq}$VI events recorded from the years 27 A.D. to 1904. the magnitude of each event was directly determined from the criteria suggested by Seo. The criteria incorporated the damage phenomena of the Japanese historical earthquake catalog, recent seismological studies, and the results of tests performed on ancient structures in Korea. Thus, the uncertainty of the magnitudes of the Korean historical earthquakes can be reduced. Also, the Gutenberg-Richter parameter values were estimated based on the revised catalog of this study. It was determined that the magnitudes of a maximum inland and minimum offshore event were approximately 6.3 and 6.5, respectively. The Gutenberg-Richter parameter pairs of the historical earthquake catalog were estimated to be a=5.32${\pm}$0.21, b=0.95${\pm}$0.19, which were somewhat lower than those obtained from recent complete instrumental earthquakes. No apparent change in the Gutenberg-Richter parameter is observed for the $16^{th}-17^{th}$ centuries of the seismically active period.

Quanterra 기록계의 실시간 이벤트 패킷을 이용한 진앙 추정 (Epicenter Estimation Using Real-Time Event Packet of Quanterra digitizer)

  • 1999년 국내 지진관측소 표준안이 제안된 이후로, 주요 지진관측 기관 대부분의 관측소에는 Quanterra 기록계가 설치되어 운영되고 있다. Quanterra 기록계에서는 실시간 이벤트 패킷과 데이터 패킷이 생성, 전송된다. 이벤트 패킷의 특성과 각 성분별 데이터 패킷의 데이터 센터 도착 시간을 분석하였다. 초당 100샘플의 속도 자료 기반 실시간 이벤트 패킷의 신호 대 잡음비와 신호 주기를 이용하여 실제 지진의 P파와 연관이 있는 패킷 선택 기준을 도출하였다. 선택된 이벤트 패킷의 시간 정보를 이용, 진앙을 추정하고 분석하였다. 시험 운영 결과 이벤트 패킷은 데이터 패킷에 비해 평균 3~4초 빨리 도착하며, 그 개수도 데이터 패킷에 비해 0.3%에 불과하다. 전체 이벤트 패킷 중 약 5% 만이 실제 지진의 P파와 연관된 이벤트 패킷으로 선택되었다. 선택된 이벤트 패킷을 이용하여 내륙에서 발생한 규모 2.5 이상의 지진에 대해서는 20초 이내에 10 km 이내의 오차로 진앙을 결정할 수 있었다.

베이지안 기법을 이용한 국내 지진 사고 예측 (Domestic earthquake prediction using bayesian approach)

  • We predict the earthquake rate in Korea following Bayesian approach. We make a model that can utilize the data to predict other levels of earthquake. An event tree model which is a frequently used graphical tool in describing accident initiation and escalation to more severe accident is transformed into an influence diagram model. Prior distributions for earthquake occurrence rate and probabilities to escalating to more severe earthquakes are assumed and likelihood of number of earthquake in a given period of time is assessed. And then posterior distributions are obtained based on observed data. We find that the minor level of earthquake is increasing while major level of earthquake is less likely.

  • The Ms 7.7 earthquake of Gujarat, India occured early in the morning of January 26, 2001. Subsequent of the earthquake, as a Seismologist at Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources(KIGAM), I have been visited epicentral area here reporting the impressions and initial observations collected during the period of Feb. 07 to 13. The trace of surface faulting was not founded. However the mechanism of the earthquake suggests the indenting Indian plate to the Eurasian plate was the tectonic background of this earthquake. Large casualties compare with the magnitude and focal depth of the event, seems due to the poor construction of the typical ordinary Indian housing structure. The wall and roof of the house are very thick to avoid high temperature of the epicentral region.

  • 지진 매개변수에 의해 지진해일의 초기 수면형상이 결정된다. 본 연구에서는 해저지진에 의해 발생하는 지진해 일의 초기 수면형상의 변화에 대한 지진 매개변수의 영향을 연구한다. 대상 지진해일은 지난 수십 년 동안 우리나라에 가장 큰 피해를 입힌 1983년 동해 중부 지진해일이다. 지진 매개변수 중에서는 strike angle(${\theta}$)이 초기수면형상에 가장 큰 영향을 주었다.

공공시설물 지진대응을 위한 중요도 평가기준에 관한 연구 (A Study on Evaluation Criteria for Infrastructure Importance regarding Earthquake)

  • The perception of earthquake in Korea has changed due to the earthquake that occurred in Gyeongju and Pohang, and the earthquake has become an important factor in infrastructure management. Damage to infrastructures in the event of an earthquake is extensive. In particular, damage to infrastructures that perform public function used to spread to the whole area. From the point of view of earthquake disaster prevention, it is very important for the public to define what infrastructures are important management targets and to prepare a countermeasure. In this study, we propose a method to evaluate the importance of infrastructure to effectively manage infrastructures for earthquakes. For this purpose, important factors for the railway bridges, power generation and electric power facilities, and apartment complexes are suggested. AHP analysis is conducted to suggest priorities. In addition, the evaluation criteria for infrastructure importance are presented.

가속도에 민감한 종합병원 의료 및 기계설비의 내진성능 평가 (Seismic Performance Evaluation of Acceleration-sensitive Medical and Mechanical Equipments in General Hospitals)

  • The main function of the general hospital building is to provide medical facilities and service. However, damage to the non-structural elements such as architectural, medical, mechanical and other components will interrupt those functions after the earthquake. Especially, it is considered that, damage to the non-structural elements is a serious event because it is directly associated with the lives of patients. Therefore, this study evaluated whether the certain non-structural elements of general hospital building has the seismic performance to provide hospital medical services after the earthquake. The evaluation is conducted by selecting the non-structural elements used in general hospital which are sensitive to acceleration, such as cooling towers, air handler, MRI and CT. As a result, the non-structural elements located on the upper floor without suitable support method did not meet the performance objective. Therefore, adequate anchorage against the seismic event is required for such non-structural elements that are acceleration-sensitives.
