  • Design of a rational earth volume conversion coefficient is required as the earth volume conversion coefficient may give great influence on construction work volume and construction costs in the civil engineering works where large-scaled earth volume is excavated. However, there are a great deal of difficulties in the calculation of the exact spoil surface earth and Insufficient earth volume by adopting the figures presented on the generally used design specifications which are not the results obtained from the selection tests in calculating the earth volume conversion coefficient. In this connection, it would be desirable to calculate the earth volume conversion coefficient by carrying out large-scaled site test adequate for the relevant environment. In consequence, this study aims at calculating the exact earth volume conversion coefficient of cutting and banking areas of weathering rocks in large-scaled construction sites where land is being developed into home lots. For this, we have excavated the respective 20 sites of the cutting and banking areas in the said site and then calculated the volume after the excavation. As a result, the relative exactness degree of the crossing was calculated at 0.5% in average. The relative exactness degree of 0.5% in the volume may be judged as an exact measurement as it corresponds to 0.17% of the relative exactness degree in the length measurement. We have calculated the exact earth volume conversion coefficient by the use of function ratio as per the wet unit weight and the indoor soil quality test as per volume calculated. And then we have found out minor differences as a result of the comparison and analysis with the earth volume conversion coefficient determined by the dry unit weight test as per sand replacement method. This may be judged as a rational design method for the calculation of earth volume conversion coefficient, as well as high reliability of site test as a precision photogrammetry is adopted for volume measurement of the irregular excavating areas.

  • The earth volume which is the basis of all the construction has gone through great development so far with the use of construction machine; however, systematic studies on the related area is in need since the appropriate compound engineering method of earth volume equipments which is a key factor for shortening the project duration and cost reduction is not systematically established and it is dependent on experience. Reasonable mechanical earth volume should take into consideration of performance and characteristics of the equipment, the kind of project, scale and conditions in advance. Also, the optimum compound engineering should be planned by selecting several available scales of equipment. In this study, the earth volume estimate model is established for optimum compound engineering of earth volume equipment for mechanized earth volume equipment loading and moving stage among many stages of earth volume task using system dynamics technique. The optimum compound engineering model of the earth volume equipment produced as a result of this is expected to make reasonable decisions in the shortest time in selecting earth volume facility.

  • In this study, EWS (Earth Work System), the earth-volume estimation program was developed in a way that could enhance efficiency of civil engineering construction through precise earth-volume modeling based on the 3D geospatial information. In this program, it is possible to estimate the precise earth-volume using LiDAR DEM and to establish the earth work plans based on the unit workload of the construction equipments. Also, EWS program can support the 3D visualization of the final results through Google Earth in order to understand intuitively or share the results of earth-volume estimation in the construction project. For verifying the possibility of appling EWS program to construction project, the construction site of Shin-Pochun substation in Shinbuk-myun, Pochon-City, Kunggi Province was selected as a study area and the results of earth-volume and earth work plans estimated from EWS program were compared with those of DAS program. As a result of comparison between EWS and DAS program, the more accurate earth-volume can be estimated by using 3D geospatial information and more reasonable earth work plan can also be established when use the EWS program was developed in this study. Thus, EWS program can enables improvement of productivity by establishing efficient construction plan in the construction site.

  • In this study, a new concept in a paddy consolidation project is introduced in that curved parallel terracing with contour-lined layout is adopted in sloping areas instead of conventional rectangular terracing. The contoured layout reduces earth-moving considerably compared to rectangular methods in consolidation projects. The objective of the paper is to develop a combinatorial optimization model using the network theory for the design of contour-lined plots which minimizes the volume of earth moving. The results showed that as the length of short side of plot is longer or the land slope is steeper, the volume of earth moving for land leveling increases. The developed optimization model is applied for three consolidated districts and the resulting optimal earth moving is compared with the volume of earth from the conventional method. The shorter is the minimum length of short side of a polt with increases the number of plots, the less is the volume of earth. As the minimum length of short side is 20 m for efficient field works by farm machinery, the volume of earth moving of optimal plot is less by 21.0∼27.1 % than that of the conventional consolidated plots.

  • As the 4th industrial revolution is in full swing and next-generation ICT(Information & Communications Technology) convergence technology is being developed, various smart construction technologies are being rapidly introduced in the construction field to respond to technological changes. In particular, since the earth-volume calculation process for site design accounts for a large part of the design cost at the construction site, related researches are being actively conducted to improve the efficiency of the process and accurately calculate the earth-volume. The purpose of this study is to present a method for quickly constructing the topography of a construction site in 3D and efficiently calculating earth-volume using the results. For this purpose, the construction site was constructed as a 3D realistic model using large-scale aerial photos obtained from UAV(Unmanned Aerial Vehicle). At this time, since the constructed 3D realistic model has a surface model structure in which volume calculation is impossible, the structure was converted into a 3D solid model to enable volume calculation. And we devised a methodology to calculate earth-volume based on CAD(Computer-Aided Design and Drafting) using the converted solid model. Automatically calculating earth-volume from the solid model by applying the method. As a result, It was possible to confirm a relative deviation of 1.52% from the calculated earth-volume from the existing survey results. In addition, as a result of comparative analysis of the process time required for each method, it was confirmed that the time required is reduced of 60%. The technique presented in this study is expected to be utilized as a technology for smart construction management, such as periodic site monitoring throughout the entire construction process, as well as cost reduction for earth-volume calculation.

  • Earth-work calculation is the important data for estimating the optimal construction cost at the construction site. Earth-work calculations require the accurate terrain data and precise soil volume calculations. Drone surveying technology provides accurate topography in a short time and economic advantages. In this paper, a drone surveying technique was used to derive a high precision soil volume calculation system. Field demonstration were performed to verify the accuracy of the volume measurement system. The results of earth-work calculation using drone survey were compared with those of GPS surveying. In addition, the developed earth-work volume calculation algorithm is compared with the existing aerial survey software (Pix4D) to verify the accuracy.

  • In the civil works, the measurement of earth-volume is one of the important elements in the estimation of the reasonable construction cost. Related studies mainly used GPS (Global Positioning System) or total station to obtain information on civil work areas. However, these methods are difficult to implement in inaccessible areas. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to use the UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) to measure the earth-volume. The study area is located in a reservoir construction site in Sangju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Republic of Korea. We compared the earth-volume amounts acquired by UAV-based surveying to ones acquired by total station-based and GPS-based surveying, respectively. In the site, the amount of earth-volume acquired by GPS was $147,286.79m^3$. The amount of earth-volume acquired by total station was $147,286.79m^3$, which is the 96.13% accuracy compared to the GPS-based surveying. The earth-volume obtained by UAV was $143,997.05m^3$ when measured without GCPs (Ground Control Points), $147,251.71m^3$ with 4 GCPs measurement, and $146,963.81m^3$ with 7 GCPs measurement. Compared to the GPS-based surveying, 97.77%, 99.98%, and 99.78% accuracies were obtained from the UAV-based surveying without GCP, 4 GCPs, and 7 GCPs, respectively. Therefore, it can be confirmed that the UAV-based surveying can be used for the earth-volume measurement.

  • It is very important for successful construction to estimate the soil volume conversion factor of domestic weathered ground accurately and reasonably. However, it is very difficult to quantify the weathering degree of weathered ground at the field, so that the soil volume conversion factor used in Korea is often dependent upon the standard of foreign countries. Besides, the soil volume conversion factor of domestic weathered ground has been rarely studied and the use and accuracy of the soil volume conversion factor have been questioned persistingly. This study suggests a simple but robust method for estimating the soil volume conversion factor and measuring the weathering degree reasonably, and attempts to establish the utilization of a soil volume conversion factor measurement system based on experimental and analytical results. We made relationship between electrical resistivity and weathering degree presented from weathering index obtained through laboratory tests using field samples, and an estimation method of in-situ weathering degree for granites and a calculation method of soil volume conversion factor using electrical resistivity. And also, we suggested the photogrametry measurement-equipment system for measuring the volume of cargo box and the application plan of stand equipment and RFID for calculating the earth volume and distinguishing buggies in order to design the measurement system for soil volume conversion factor applicable to the field. Ultimately, the Weathered Earth-work Management Program (WEMP) was developed, so field managers may easily obtain the information about earth volume and soil volume conversion factor at the weathered ground.
