The earth volume which is the basis of all the construction has gone through great development so far with the use of construction machine; however, systematic studies on the related area is in need since the appropriate compound engineering method of earth volume equipments which is a key factor for shortening the project duration and cost reduction is not systematically established and it is dependent on experience. Reasonable mechanical earth volume should take into consideration of performance and characteristics of the equipment, the kind of project, scale and conditions in advance. Also, the optimum compound engineering should be planned by selecting several available scales of equipment. In this study, the earth volume estimate model is established for optimum compound engineering of earth volume equipment for mechanized earth volume equipment loading and moving stage among many stages of earth volume task using system dynamics technique. The optimum compound engineering model of the earth volume equipment produced as a result of this is expected to make reasonable decisions in the shortest time in selecting earth volume facility.
In this study, EWS (Earth Work System), the earth-volume estimation program was developed in a way that could enhance efficiency of civil engineering construction through precise earth-volume modeling based on the 3D geospatial information. In this program, it is possible to estimate the precise earth-volume using LiDAR DEM and to establish the earth work plans based on the unit workload of the construction equipments. Also, EWS program can support the 3D visualization of the final results through Google Earth in order to understand intuitively or share the results of earth-volume estimation in the construction project. For verifying the possibility of appling EWS program to construction project, the construction site of Shin-Pochun substation in Shinbuk-myun, Pochon-City, Kunggi Province was selected as a study area and the results of earth-volume and earth work plans estimated from EWS program were compared with those of DAS program. As a result of comparison between EWS and DAS program, the more accurate earth-volume can be estimated by using 3D geospatial information and more reasonable earth work plan can also be established when use the EWS program was developed in this study. Thus, EWS program can enables improvement of productivity by establishing efficient construction plan in the construction site.
It is very important for successful construction to estimate the soil volume conversion factor of domestic weathered ground accurately and reasonably. However, it is very difficult to quantify the weathering degree of weathered ground at the field, so that the soil volume conversion factor used in Korea is often dependent upon the standard of foreign countries. Besides, the soil volume conversion factor of domestic weathered ground has been rarely studied and the use and accuracy of the soil volume conversion factor have been questioned persistingly. This study suggests a simple but robust method for estimating the soil volume conversion factor and measuring the weathering degree reasonably, and attempts to establish the utilization of a soil volume conversion factor measurement system based on experimental and analytical results. We made relationship between electrical resistivity and weathering degree presented from weathering index obtained through laboratory tests using field samples, and an estimation method of in-situ weathering degree for granites and a calculation method of soil volume conversion factor using electrical resistivity. And also, we suggested the photogrametry measurement-equipment system for measuring the volume of cargo box and the application plan of stand equipment and RFID for calculating the earth volume and distinguishing buggies in order to design the measurement system for soil volume conversion factor applicable to the field. Ultimately, the Weathered Earth-work Management Program (WEMP) was developed, so field managers may easily obtain the information about earth volume and soil volume conversion factor at the weathered ground.
Small-scale UAS(Fusion technique of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles platform and Sensors, 'sUAS') opens various new applications in construction fields and so becoming progressively common due to the considerable potentials in terms of accuracy, costs and abilities. The purpose of this study is that the investigation of the validation on the utilization of sUAS for earth stockpile volume calculations on sites. For this, generate 3D models(DSM) with sUAS aerial images on an cone shaped soil stockpile approximately $270m{\times}300m{\times}20m$, which located at Baegot Life Park in Siheung-si, compared stockpile volume estimates produced by sUAS image analysis, against volume estimates obtained by GNSS Network-RTK ground surveying method which selected as the criteria of earth stockpile volume. The result through comparison and examination show(demonstrate) that there was under 2% difference between the volume calculated with the GNSS Network RTK data and the sUAV data, especially sUAS imaged-based volume estimate of a stockpile can be greatly simplified, done quickly, and very cost effective over conventional terrestrial survey methods. Therefore, with consideration of various plan to assess the height of vegetation, sUAS image-based application expected very useful both volume estimate and 3D geospatial information extraction in small and medium-sized sites.
Microphytobenthos that supply nutrients to the intertidal ecosystem play an important part as a primary producer. If we estimate distribution and density of microphytobenthos, we can possibly calculate a volume of primary product in the tidal flat and its effect to the intertidal ecosystem. To estimate the portion of microphytobenthos, we used a linear spectral unmixing (LSU) method. LSU is a tool for inference the proportions of the pure components (or end-members) in a mixed pixel. The selection of end-members is critical to LSU. The end-members can be selected either from spectral libraries built from field surveys or from a remotely sensed image. We compared the two approaches of end-member selection, and the preliminary results showed end-members from from spectral library are as effective as those from image itself.

Variation of decision variables for optimal remediation using the pump-and-treat method is examined to estimate the effect of the degree of concentration constraint. Simulation-optimization method using genetic algorithm is applied to minimize the total pumping volume. In total volume minimization strategy, the remediation time increases rapidly prior to significant increase in pumping rates. When the concentration constraint is set severer, the more wells are required and the well on the down-gradient direction from the plume hot-spot gives more efficient remediation performance than that on the hot-spot position. These results show that the more profitable strategy for remediation can be achieved by increasing the required remediation time than raising the pumping rate until the time reaches a certain limitation level. So, the remediation time has to be considered as one of the essential decision variables fer optimal remediation design.

Diverse geostatistical tools such as kriging have been used to estimate the volume and spatial coverage of contaminated soil needed for remediation. However, many approaches frequently yield estimation errors, due to inherent geostatistical uncertainties. Such errors may yield over- or under-estimation of the amounts of polluted soils, which cause an over-estimation of remediation cost as well as an incomplete clean-up of a contaminated land. Therefore, it is very important to use a better estimation tool considering uncertainties arising from incomplete field investigation (i.e., contamination survey) and mathematical spatial estimation. In the current work, as better estimation tools we propose stochastic simulation approaches which allow the remediation volume to be assessed more accurately along with uncertainty estimation. To test the efficiency of proposed methods, heavy metals (esp., Pb) contaminated soil of a shooting range area was selected. In addition, we suggest a quantitative method to delineate the confident interval of estimated volume (and spatial extent) of polluted soil based on the spatial aspect of uncertainty. The methods proposed in this work can improve a better decision making on soil remediation.
Rainfall is one of crucial factors that impact on our environment. Rainfall data is important in water resources management, flood forecasting, and designing hydraulic structures. However, it is not available in some rural watersheds without rain gauges. Thus, effective ways of interpolating the available records are needed. Despite many widely used spatial interpolation methods, few studies have investigated rainfall center characteristics. Based on the theory that the spatial distribution of convective rainfall event has a definite center with maximum rainfall, we present a mathematical interpolation method to estimate convective rainfall distribution and indicate the rainfall center location and the center rainfall volume. We apply the method to estimate three convective rainfall events in Santa Catalina Island where reliable hydrological data is available. A cross-validation technique is used to evaluate the method. The result shows that the method will suffer from high relative error in two situations: 1) when estimating the minimum rainfall and 2) when estimating an external site. For all other situations, the method's performance is reasonable and acceptable. Since the method is based on a continuous function, it can provide distributed rainfall data for distributed hydrological model sand indicate statistical characteristics of given areas via mathematical calculation.
Backscattered underwater signals from multiple scatterers contain information regarding resolvable spatial distribution of scatterers. This experimental study describes the spectral characteristics of backscattered signal from multiple scatterers, which are regularly or randomly spaced, in terms of their amplitude and phase and a proper signal analysis that will eventually provide scatterer spacing estimation. Air-filled tubes suspended in water, steel balls and plastic tubes buried in the sediment are the multiple scatterers. The cepstrum and the spectral autocorrelation (SAC) methods were used to estimate the scatterer spacing from the backscattered signals. It was found that the SAC method could be improved by employing singular value decomposition (SVD) to extract the effective rank for the spectral components. Unlike the conventional method of estimating the density of scatterers within the insonified volume of water, this type of estimation method would provide better understanding of the spatial distribution of scatterers in the ocean.

In this study, an earth work design program which will improve the efficiency of earth work and enable to carry out the design using 3D Geospace-based earth work modelling in design stage was developed. Estimate of accurate earth work volume is achievable using 3D grid DEM, and based on this, a mass calculation chart was developed for movement of earth and equipment. In consideration for the resources for various construction equipments needed for civil engineering works, soil conversion and the passage is displayed. In addition, the result is restored in the form of open API-based KLM to make it possible for the users to identify the progress of the construction, thereby enhancing the intuitive understanding of three-dimensional visualization and making it easier to share the result of the analysis.
