A Study on School Adjustment for Early Entrance Students of Science Academy for the Gifted (과학영재학교 조기입학 학생들의 학교적응에 관한 연구)

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the conditions and strategies of interaction for the school adjustment for the early entrance students of science academy for the gifted. To know their concerns and process of school adjustment, we interviewed six early entrance gifted students of the science academy and two gifted students preparing for their early entrance with a semi-structured questions. Using the grounded theory, a paradigm model was organized and a core category was abstracted through the open, axial, and selective coding. Based on the open coding analysis, 75 concepts, 21 sub-categories, and 10 categories were derived. In the axial coding, the paradigm model was organized by the link between 10 categories derived from open coding. Through the selective coding, this study discovered the core category about early entrance student's school adjustment was overcoming difficulties by using academic, social, and emotional strategy for school adjustment. Through this, we understand the school adjustment process of the students of early entrance to science academy for the gifted.

The Introduction of a Preschool Class as an Alternative to Lowering School Entrance Age: A Case Study of Sweden (스웨덴의 유아학급 설치 사례를 통해 살펴본 취학연령 하향화 대처 방안)

  • When the Korean government announced the lowering of the school entrance age from 6 to 5 years in an effort to increase the fertility rate, one candidate for the Seoul mayor rode on the slogan, 'one dong, one public kindergarten'. This study attempted to show the introduction of a preschool class for six-year-olds being used as analternative to lowering school entrance age in Sweden. First, the current state of preschool class, the Early Childhood Education and Care, and the education system in Sweden were described. Next, the background for the introduction of the preschool classes was analyzed. Thirdly, the effects of preschool class were evaluated from the perspectives of 6 year-olds as well as the institutiona land social status of the ECEC. Results from this study imply not only that the lower school entrance age policy should be abolished but also preschool classes could be considered as an alternative.

A Phenomenological Study on Early Entrance Experiences of Science Gifted High School Students (과학영재학교 조기입학 경험에 대한 현상학적 탐색)

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the meaning of early entrance experiences of science gifted high school students. The subjects were 13 students who are attending science gifted high school in Seoul. The research data were collected through in-depth interviews. The qualitative study applied the phenomenological method of Giorgi. The early entrance experiences of science gifted high school students were clustered into 13 specific themes and 5 general structures. The results indicated that the early entrance students were surprised by their admissions from the school and they worry about their lack of readiness. However, they follow up their missed 1 year study after all. It took from a few weeks to 1~2 years depending on the student. At any rate, the environment of the school such as differentiated curricular, dormitory life, and studying atmospheres were helpful for the students to adopt easily. Even though they sometimes show a little deficiency, it won't be an issue, they just corporate each other and pursue their studies. As time goes on, they become friends even though they call other students 'big brother'. When the placement of gifted students take place, we do not need to hesitate because of their age, but need to consider the environment of school and characteristics of student.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate pre-service early childhood teachers' procedures for entering college, their perception of major areas of satisfaction and career progression. The subjects of this study were 522 students majoring in early childhood education in Busan. The findings of this study were as follows. First, the major motivation of entering into college for these students majoring in early childhood education was 'to become an early childhood teacher'. Second, the majority of students majoring in early childhood education were satisfied with their majors for their aptitude for studying in this area. Third, the most commonly expressed employment preference for such students was that of a public kindergarten teacher due primarily to job security and appropriate rates of pay.

Adaptability of Third Grade Children in Cases of Early Entrance to Elementary School (만 5세 조기취학 아동의 초등학교 3학년 적응도에 관한 연구)

  • This study investigated the adaptability of 3rd grade children in Taejon who had started first grade at 5 years of age. Subjects were 64 third grade children, half of whom had started first grade at 5 years and half at 6 years of age. Thirty-four parents and 36 elementary school teachers were also sampled. The General Intelligence Test, the Learning and Thinking Ability Test, and the Socio-Emotional Development Checklist were administered to the children. Parents and Teachers responded to the Questionnaire on the Adaptability of Early Entrance Children. There were no statistically significant differences between children who started first grade at 5 and those who started at 6 years of age in their Intelligence scores, Learning and Thinking Ability scores, and the Socio-Emotional Development scores. Parents as sell as teachers felt that the early entrance system was positive for children.

The Effects of Children's Elementary School Entance Age and Sex on Cognitive and Social Abilities (아동의 초등학교 입학연령과 성에 따른 인지적.사회적 능력)

  • The purpose of this study was to find out the effects of children's elementary school entrance age and sex on cognitive and social abilities. The subjects were 80 the same number was slected by elementary school entrance age(5-year and 6-year) and sex. Their cognitive and social abilities were measured by Intelligence Maturity Test and Revised Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales. The data were statistically analyzed including descriptive statistics and multivariate analysis of variance. The results were as follows: 1) 6-year-old children had higher perceptive ability of sameness and calculation ability than 5-year-old children. Girls also had higher IQ and language concept than boys, 2) 6-year-old children's communication socialization and total social ability were higher than those of 5-year old children Girls' communication and total social ability were higher than those of boys. The implication was that it would be important to consider children's social ability if their entrance age were decided. In addition Early Entrance to Elementary School system should be reconsidered in the point of childer's developmental adaptation.

The analysis of college entrance tendency in applicants to dental hygiene department (일개 대학 치위생학과 지원자의 입시지원 경향분석)

  • Objectives : The purpose of the study was to investigate the influencing factors of major and university choice in the changing environments that kick out the insincere universities keeping pace with the national policy. Methods : A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 177 subjects after receiving informed consents. The questionnaire consisted of general characteristics, influencing factors on university and department choice including multiple application. Chi-square test was used for analysis of the difference between early and regular admission. Results : Employment was the most important reason for choice of dental hygiene department that accounted for 96%. The access route for university information was college homepage for entrance information that accounted for 72.3% and 76.3% of applicants were advised by their parents for their choice for university. The information was mainly composed of school life(92.1%) and employment (81.9%). The applicants wanted to meet the students(58.8%) and to come in contact with the university homepage(57.1%). Early and regular applicants differed in reasons for college entrance(p=0.032), information delivery for major(p=0.013) and multiple application for entrance(p<0.01). Conclusions : University homepage and communication with the students will give much information to the applicants. So the university had better choose the homepage and communication for marketing strategy.

Failing the Game Quests in James Joyce's "Araby"

  • This paper suggests a different reading of James Joyce's "Araby" by offering the video game as a lens through which we can reimagine the story. Understanding the unnamed boy's journey to the Araby bazaar as a fetch quest, this paper focuses on the boy's failure to complete this quest. As soon as the boy promises Mangan's sister something from Araby, his fetch quest begins. In order to complete the quest, the boy must successfully perform three sub-quests: get money from his uncle as early as he can, get on the train for the Araby bazaar on time, and pass through the sixpenny entrance at the bazaar. However, because his uncle comes home late, the boy fails to get the money early, and that sets off the subsequent failures. The boy then takes the train late and arrives at the bazaar so late that he feels he must go through any entrance. So he walks through the adult entrance by mistake. As a result, he does not have enough money to buy a gift, failing the larger quest. But, regardless of this failure, the boy can try these quests as many as he wants until he finally succeeds in completing them. But no matter how the boy tries to accomplish these subquests, he is doomed to fail them because he cannot make his uncle come home early. The more he tries his quest, the more bitterly he realizes that he will ultimately fail. In this respect, the boy's "anguish and anger" should be understood as his epiphany: the re-playability of the game is possible, but all the replays lead to the same failure: losing the game. In this regard, reading Joyce's "Araby" is much like playing a video game.

A Study on Changes in the Images of Children Possessed by Applicants for the Department of Early Childhood Education after They Enter the Department (유아교육과 지원자의 유아에 대한 이미지와 입학 후 유아에 대한 이미지 변화 연구)

  • The purpose of the present study was to examine the images of children possessed by applicants for the department of early childhood education and find out how the images of children have been changed when the applicants have entered the department from successful applicants. Study subjects were 328 applicants for the department of early childhood education and 25 students who passed the entrance examination and completed the first year. Data were collected by painting metaphors and the contents of the collected data were analyzed. According to the results of analysis, the images of children possessed by applicants for the department of early childhood education were 'beings that require sincerity, love, and attention', 'beings that must be taught and led', 'beings that are liberal and characterful', 'beings that are bright and pure and give happiness', 'beings that have potential for learning and growth' and 'beings that are soft and weak' and when one year had passed after the entrance into the department, the images of children possessed by the students were changed into the subjects of teaching by the students as teachers and images based on developmental knowledge of childhood.
