  • Phenotypic characterization and body biometric in 13 traits (height at withers, body length, chest girth, paunch girth, ear length, tail length, length of tail up to switch, face length, face width, horn length, circumference of horn at base, distances between pin bone and hip bone) were recorded in 233 adult Gojri buffaloes from Punjab and Himachal Pradesh states of India. Traits were analysed by using varimax rotated principal component analysis (PCA) with Kaiser Normalization to explain body conformation. PCA revealed four components which explained about 70.9% of the total variation. First component described the general body conformation and explained 31.5% of total variation. It was represented by significant positive high loading of height at wither, body length, heart girth, face length and face width. The communality ranged from 0.83 (hip bone distance) to 0.45 (horn length) and unique factors ranged from 0.16 to 0.55 for all these 13 different biometric traits. Present study suggests that first principal component can be used in the evaluation and comparison of body conformation in buffaloes and thus provides an opportunity to distinguish between early and late maturing to adult, based on a small group of biometric traits to explain body conformation in adult buffaloes.

  • A 3-year-old, intact female Poong-san dog was presented with a 4-month history of erosive, erythematous dermatitis unresponsive to systemic antibiotics and glucocorticoids. Crust, erosion, and alopecia were noted on the ear pinnae, bridge of nose, and forelimb. Cytological evaluation of intact pustules showed isolated free-floating rounded acantholytic keratinocytes admixed with non-degenerated neutrophils and eosinophils. Results of histopathologic examination revealed the intra-epidermal pustules with predominant neutrophils, less eosinophils, and isolated and clustered acantholytic cells. A diagnosis of pemphigus foliaceus (PF) was made based on the history, clinical, cytological and histopathological results. The skin lesions had improved after systemic cyclosporine therapy. This case report demonstrates that cyclosporine, an immunosuppressive agent, can be used in the management of PF in dogs.

  • Purpose: The subjective visual vertical (SVV) test is used to evaluate the otolith function in the inner ear. This study compared the different balance ability according to the results of the SVV in healthy adults. Methods: This study recruited 30 normal healthy subjects who did not have neurological and musculoskeletal disorders. The subjects were divided into experimental and control groups based on the results of SVV: experimental group, >2°; control group, <2°. The static balance ability was evaluated using the Fourier Index, which could evaluate the balance capacity objectively and quantitatively. Results: The mean angle of the SVV in the experimental and control groups was 4.44° and 0.59°, respectively. In the result of the Fourier series, the F1 frequency band in the experimental group showed a significantly higher value under one condition compared to the control group (p<0.05). In the F2-4 and F5-6 frequency bands, the experimental group showed a significant increase in the Fourier series value under the four conditions compared to the control group (p<0.05). In the F7-8 frequency band, significantly higher values of the Fourier series were observed in the experimental group under the three different conditions (p<0.05). Conclusion: These results showed increased trunk sway while maintaining static balance in the experimental group who showed a larger SVV angle compared to the control group. The SVV can be applied to evaluate the vestibular system and balance ability in normal adults.

  • This study examined the effects of auricular acupressure on female college students with functional constipation to propose auricular acupressure as an effective and evidence-based nursing intervention. This is an experimental study designed with randomization and single-blind in a Sham-control approach. The subjects included 44 female college students with functional constipation whose symptoms met the Rome IV criteria. In this study, five different acupressure sites were applied to each group; the experimental group (n=23) received auricular acupressure on rectum, large intestine, lung, san jiao, and shenmen, whereas the Sham control group (n=21) received acupressure on ankle, helix, tooth, jaw, and external ear. The intervention was implemented once a week for a total of six weeks. After six weeks, the severity of constipation, stool form, and quality of life regarding constipation in the experimental group significantly improved compared to that of the Sham control group (p<.001). Consequently, the study showed that auricular acupressure can be used as an effective nursing intervention to alleviate constipation in female college students.

  • This thesis deals a method to deliver more realistic sound by cancelling the cross-talk which is inherent to the 5.1 channel speaker system. The acoustical model for cross-talk cancellation is the free field model. This model minimizes distortion of sound. I used the bark scale sound quality compensation which based on psycho-acoustic. For the surround channels, band-limited sound quality compensation is performed in the frequency domain. I also performed the sound quality assessment test on the traditional 2 channel stereo and 5.1 channel system. This test is performed in the test chamber which satisfies the ITU-R specifications. I uses the IACC (Inter-Aural Cross-Correlation) to determine the preferences of the amateur and the golden ear experts to asses the trans-aural filter. According to the result from the proposed method, I got more the 38 dB separation rates with the Dolby standard speaker array. The results on the diffusion by the subjective test with the experts shows 0.4 point increased then before.

  • In this paper, the bio-heat equation including thermoregulatory functions is solved for an anatomically based human head model comprised of 14 tissues to study the thermal implications of high-power exposure to electromagnetic(EM) fields due to half-wave dipole antenna both at 835 and 1,800 MHz. The dipole antenna is located at the side of the ear and the front of the eyes. The FDTD method has been used for the SAR computation. When solving the BHE, the thermoregulation function and sweating effetecs are included in order to predict more exact temperature increase. It is noted that an approximately proportional relationship between the tissues and the maximum temperature increase and the antenna power is not maintained when the thermoregulation and sweating effects are fully accounted for under high power exposure.

  • Eleutherococcus senticosus (also called Acanthopanax senticosus), belonging to Araliaceae family, has been used as an important medicinal woody plant. Mature seeds of Eleutherococcus senticosus have rudimentary (extremely immature) zygotic embryos and require a long-term stratification for about 18 months to induce germination. Here, through the methods of endosperm removal and other exogenous treatments, we investigated the factors for inducing rudimentary embryos by in vitro culture, Rudimentary zygotic embryos in seeds were at globular to heart-shaped stage at about $250{\mu}m$ in length just after harvest of fruits. When the seeds without testa were cultured on 1/2 MS (Murashige and Skoog 1962) medium, they did not germinate regardless of medium and sucrose concentrations but the removal of endosperm tissue markedly stimulated the growth of rudimentary zygotic embryos. The embryo reached ear-lier maturation, once when the endosperm surrounding the rudimentary embryos was removed. Rudimentary zygotic embryos developed cotyledons within 3 weeks of culture after endosperm emoval. However, post-mature zygotic embryos failed to germinate though they were morphologically normal, indicating another dormancy of embryos. $GA_3\;(2.0\;\cal{mg/L})$ and/or charcoal ($0.2\%$) treatment rapidly enhanced the germination of zygotic embryos. These results suggest that E. senticosus seeds have double dormancy; i. e. morphological rudimentary dormancy influenced by surrounding endosperm and physiological dormancy after post-maturation of zygotic embryos. Based on the above findings, we established the rapid germination of rudimentary zygotic embryos by in vitro culture of excised seeds with endosperm removal and $GA_3$ treatment.

  • Numerical solutions are presented for the heat transfer from radiating and convecting fins. Consideration is given to thin, annular fins attached to a tube surface for which the temperature is constant. Fin to fin, fin to base, and fin to environment radiative interactions are considered. It is assumed that the radiating surface is diffuse-gray, the environment is black, and the surrounding fluid is transparent. The radiation terms are formulated by using Poljak's net-radiation methoad. The mathematical description of the simultaneously heat transport by conduction, convection, and radiation leads to a nonlinear integro-differential equation. This has been solved for a wide range of the pertinent physical parameters by using finite difference method and iteration method based on the Newton-Raphson technique. The temperature distributions, heat transfer rates, fin efficiencies, and fin effectivenesses are presented in dimensionless form. The results definitely indicate that the use of fins leads to a significant increase in heat transfer compared with the unfinned tube.

  • Public concerns associated with the electromagnetic field (EMF) exposures from mobile phones on human body are increased. Although studies on the effects of the EMF exposures on human have been carried out for a long time, it is not proved yet whether the EMF effect is harmful or not. Based on the scientific results by experts, EMF exposure limits have been regulated as a precautionary approach on the assumption that the EMF effect may be harmful. It is well known that absorbed EMF can be transformed into heat within biological tissues and that thermal effects are related with the specific absorption rate (SAR) distribution. However, the relative magnitude and distribution of the energies are not well defined. Although there is comprehensive information of the thermal effects, most of them come from animal and in vitro studies. Considerable efforts have been made to analyze the EMF absorption model while the actual temperature in the human body has been rarely measured. Temperature changes on the face of a healthy male volunteer were studied. A digital mobile phone of 1.8GHz was used. A digital infrared imaging system (IRIS-5000, Medicore, Seoul, Korea) was applied to take infrared pictures of the face every minute while the volunteer talked over the mobile phone for 20 minutes. The specification of the imaging system was as follows: Temperature resolution = 0.1$^{\circ}C$; Range of temperature measurement = 17~40$^{\circ}C$; Pixel size = 0.9mm ${\times}$ 0.9mm; Frame time = 2.6s; Active temperature of detector = 77$^{\circ}$K. The result showed that temperature of the ear region was increased during the phone call and the region of the temperature increase on the face was expanded as the phone call time increased. Further study is necessary to investigate the temperature rise analytically and quantitatively.

  • Background Cryptotia is a congenital ear deformity in which the upper pole appears buried beneath the mastoid skin. Cryptotia is a common auricular malformation among Asians. The aim of this paper is to examine the surgical techniques for and complications of 34 cryptotic patients. Methods Surgery was performed for 34 cryptotic deformities (January 2005 to January 2012). Twenty-two patients (64.7%) were classified as having type I cryptotia, and 12 patients (37.5%) type II cryptotia. Among the type I cryptotia patients, 8 patients had mild deformity and 14 severe deformity. Among the type II cryptotia patients, 10 patients had mild deformity and 2 severe deformity. Results The mild deformities were corrected via Z-plasty, V-Y plasty, full-thickness skin graft, and transposition flap, while the severe deformities were corrected via cartilage graft or Medporfor the spread of cartilage adhesion of antihelix. There were two cases of reinvagination in the autologous cartilage graft group. Implant exposure occurred with Medpor (two cases). There were two cases of hypertrophic scar on the previous surgical wound with Medpor. There were no complications in the 18 patients who had mild deformities. Conclusions The type I cryptotia patients had more severe deformities than the type II cryptotia patients. As most of the type II cryptotia patients had only mild deformities, their deformities were corrected without using autologous conchal cartilage graft or Medpor, except for two patients. Through more case analyses, researchers should make an effort to identify methods for recurrence and prevention of complication.
