Parameter Evaluation of High-Power Pulse Transformer for L-Band 30-MW Klystron (L-band 30-MW 클라이스트론용 고출력 펄스트랜스포머의 파라미터 평가)

  • An L-band Linear Accelerator System for E-beam sterilization is under construction for bio-technology application. The klystron-modulator system as an RF microwave source has an important role as major components to offer the system reliability for long time steady-state operations. A PFN line type pulse generator with a peak power of 71.5-MW, $7\;{\mu}s$, 285 pps is required to drive a high-power klystron. The high power pulse transformer has a function of transferring pulse energy from a pulsed power source to a high power load. The pulse transformer producing a pulse with a peak voltage of 275 kV is required to produce 30-MW peak and 60 kW average RF output power at the frequency of 1.3-GHz. We have designed the high power pulse transformer with 1:13 step-up ratio. The peak and average power capability is 71.5-MW (275 kV, 260 A at load side with $7\;{\mu}s$ pulse width) and 130 kW, respectively. In this paper, we present measurements and its analysis on the design parameters, and an initial test result as well as a design concept on the high-power pulse transformer.

T2 Relaxographic Mapping using 8-echo CPMG MRI Pulse Sequence

  • The mapping of the spin-spin relaxation time T2 in pixed-by-pixel was suggested as a quantitative diagnostic tool in medicine. Although the CPMG pulse sequence has been known to be the best pulse sequence for T2 measurement in physics NMR, the supplied pulse sequence by the manufacture of MRI system was able to obtain the maximum of 4 CPMG images. Eight or more images with different echo time TEs are required to construct a reliable T2 map, so that two or more acquisitions were required, which easily took more than 10 minutes. 4-echo CPMG imaging pulse sequence was modified to generate the maximum of 8 MR images with evenly spaced echo time TEs. In human MR imaging, since patients tend to move at least several pixels between the different acquisitions, 8-echo CPMG imaging sequence reduces the acquisition time and may remove any misregistration of each pixel's signal for the fitting T2. The resultant T2 maps using the theoretically simulated images and using the MR images of the human brain suggested that 8 echo CPMG sequence with short echo spacing such as 17∼20 msec can give the reliable T2 map.

  • AC PDP(Plasma Display panel)에서 MgO 보호막은 방전공간에 직접 노출되어 있기 때문에, AC PDP의 수명과 방전 특성이 직접적인 영향을 미친다. 그동안 보다 좋은 특성의 MgO 보호막을 증착하기 위한 연구가 Magnetron-sputtering, E-beam, ion-plating 등 여러 가지 방법에 의해 진행되어 왔다. 본 논문에서는 Bipolar pulse power를 사용하여 sputtering 방법으로 MgO 보호막을 증착하여, 그 전기적, 광학적 특성을 기존의 magnetron-sputtering 방법으로 증착한 MgO 보호막과 비교하였다. 그 결과 Bipo1ar pulse power를 이용한 MgO 보호막의 결정립이 더 크게 나타났으며 그것으로부터 AC PDP의 수명향상에 효과가 있을 것으로 사료된다.

  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging(MRI) has chemical shift phenomenon between fat and water, and the phenomenon has influence on structure enclosed by fat. Strong signals emitted from fat often generate false artefact, which reflects the importance of fat suppression techniques. There have been a number of researches on fat suppression techniques, but using fat suppression method alone in MRI can cause difficultproblems in diagnosis. This paper aims to study a fat suppression method by Chemical Shift Selective saturation(CHESS). This research describes the theoretical background and the experiment on water and fat phantom with MR instruments. In the experiment, CHESS pulse was designed by utilising Matlap program, and the pulse diagram was generated for the Pre-saturation process. The experiment using water and fat phantom was applied to C-spine, L-spine and Breast, and produced successful fat suppression results. This experiment has proved that the CHESSpulse fat suppression is a very helpful technique in diagnosing medical imaging. Challenges in the development of the ultrafast electron microscope (초고속 전자 현미경의 개발과 극복 과제)

  • In this article, a historical and scientific review on the development of an ultrafast electron microscope is supplied, and the challenges in further improvement of time resolution under sub-picosecond or even sub-femtosecond scale is reviewed. By combining conventional scanning electron microscope and femtosecond laser technique, an ultrafast electron microscope was invented. To overcome its temporal resolution limit which originates from chromatic aberration and Coulomb repulsion between individual electrons, a generation of electron pulse via strong-field photoemission has been investigated thoroughly. Recent studies reveal that the field enhancement and field accumulation associated with the near-field formation at sharply etched metal nanoprobe enabled such field emission by ordinary femtosecond laser irradiation. Moreover, a considerable acceleration reaching 20 eV with near-infrared laser and up to 300 eV acceleration with mid-infrared laser was observed, and the possibility to control the amount of acceleration by varying the incident laser pulse intensity and wavelength. Such findings are noteworthy because of the possibility of realizing a sub-femtosecond, few nanometer imaging of nanostructured sample.in silicon as thermoelectric materials.

Experimental study on the optimum pulse jet cleaning conditions of a rectangular bag-filter system (사각형 여과집진기 충격기류 시스템의 최적탈진조건에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Cylindrical bag filter system with pulse jet cleaning has been the most common device to control particle laden exhaust gas from the various industrial processes. But, it has many shortcomings due to particle reattachment and frequent bag rupture. In recent years, rectangular type bag filter system has been developed to overcome the problems associated with the cylindrical system. However, not many studies about the rectangular system were not done, compared to the cylindrical system. In this study, the optimum pulse jet cleaning conditions were thus tested by the series of experiments. The factors tested in this study are pulse distance, pulse pressure, pulse duration, the number of holes for pulsing and bag materials. A single bag ($1,500mmL{\times}50mmW{\times}300mmH$) system and a multi-bags (3 bags in a row) were tested separately. The highest removal efficiency with a single bag system was found at the conditions with pulse distance of 10cm, pulse pressure of $3kg/cm^2$, pulse duration of 0.3s, pulse jet number of 6 and Polyester bag. With the multi-bags system, the best cleaning conditions were found at the bag interval of 20cm with the simultaneous pulsing and the bag interval of 15cm with the serial pulsing.

Design of High Efficiency Switching-Mode Doherty Power Amplifier Using GaN HEMT (GaN HEMT를 이용한 고효율 스위칭 모드 도허티 전력증폭기 설계)

  • In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of a high efficiency Doherty power amplifier using gallium nitride (GaN) high-electron mobility transistor (HEMT). The carrier and peaking amplifiers of the proposed Doherty power amplifier consist of the switching-mode Class-E power amplifiers. The test conditions are a duty of 10% and a pulse width of $100\;{\mu}s$ and pulse repetition frequency (PRF) of 1 kHz for a S-band radar application. A RF performance peak PAE of 64% with drain efficiency of 80.6%, at 6 dB output back-off point from saturated output power of 45.5 dBm, was obtained at 2.85 GHz.

A Stable Threshold Linear Current Pulse Discriminator (안정한계 선형전류펄스변별기)

  • A linear current-pulse discriminator consisting: of a transistor monostable multivibrator and a Si tunnel diode is described. The input currant pulse range is about 50$\mu$A~5.23mA. The measured maximum linearity deviation is $\pm$0.75% in the input current pulse range mentioned above. The pulse resolving ability of the discriminator measured depends upon the bias current through the T, D. ; and, under the reverse bias current of 3mA, the resolving time is 2rs if allow the excess pulse amplitude of 5%. The threshold stability of the discriminator depends mainly upon the stability of the peak current Ip of the T. D. ; and, under the ambient temperature variation from $0^{\circ}C$ to 5$0^{\circ}C$, no bigger threshold variation than the maximum linearity deviation, i. e. $\pm$ 0.75%, was observed.

Wave shape analysis of seismic records at borehole of TTRH02 and IWTH25 (KiK-net)

  • The KiK-net by NIED is a vertical array measurement system. In the database of KiK-net, singular pulse waves were observed in the seismic record at the borehole of TTRH02 during the mainshock (the magnitude of Japan Meteorological Agency (MJ) 7.3, MW 6.8) and aftershock (Mj 4.2) of Tottori-ken Seibu earthquake in 2000. Singular pulse waves were also detected in the seismic records at the borehole of IWTH25 during the Iwate-Miyagi Nairiku earthquake in 2008 (MJ 7.2, MW 6.9). These pulse waves are investigated by using the wave shape analysis methods, e.g., the non-stationary Fourier spectra and the double integrated displacement profiles. Two types of vibration modes are discriminated as the occurrence mechanism of the singular pulse waves. One corresponds to the reversal points in the displacement profile with the amplitude from 10-4 m to 10-1 m, which is mainly related to the fault activity and the amplification pass including the mechanical amplification (collision) of the seismograph in the casing pipe. The other is the cyclic pulse waves in the interval of reversal points, which is estimated as the backlash of the seismograph itself with the amplitude from 10-5 m to 10-4 m.

  • Methods to measure and estimate transpiration of a forest composed of evergreen broad-leaved trees (Pasania edulis Makino) are studied. Heat pulse velocity has been measured along with soil moisture and micrometeorological factors at the Fukuoka Experimental Forest, the Research Institute of Kyushu University Forests in Fukuoka, Japan (33$^{\circ}$38'N, 130$^{\circ}$31'E, alt. 75m). Tree cutting measurement was conducted to convert the heat pulse velocity into sap flow and transpiration. A big leaf model to calculate transpiration and Interception loss is examined and the estimated values are compared with the measured values obtained from the heat pulse measurement. The results show that 1) Pasania edulis Makino posessing radial pore structure had relatively high water content and high heat pulse velocity even within the central part of the stem near the pith, 2) the heat pulse velocity was well correspond to the water uptake in the tree cutting measurement, 3) the estimation of sap flow based on the heat pulse velocity is accurate, and 4) the big leaf model using the parameters obtained from measurement of a portable photosynthesis system in one day in summer gives reasonable estimation of transpiration independent of seasons and weather.
