  • The purpose of this paper is to study a high-performance control scheme for neutral-point-clamping three-level (NPC-3L) inverter fed dual three-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives by considering some asymmetric factors such as the non-identical parameters in phase windings. To implement this, the system model is analyzed for dual three-phase PMSM drives with asymmetric factors based on the vector space decomposition (VSD) principle. Based on the equivalent circuits, PI controllers with feedforward compensation are used in the d-q subspace for regulating torque, where the cut-off frequency of the PI controllers are set at the twice the fundamental frequency for compensating both the additional DC component and the second order component caused by asymmetry. Meanwhile, proportional resonant (PR) controllers are proposed in the x-y subspace for suppressing the possible unbalanced currents in the phase windings. A dual three-phase space vector modulation (DT-SVM) is designed for the drive, and the balancing factor is designed based on the numerical fitting surface for balancing the DC link capacitor voltages. Experimental results are given to demonstrate the validity of the theoretical analysis and the proposed control scheme.

  • This paper shows the method of winding connection and the balance of three phase of dual inverter systems used for offshore wind power generator. In order to satisfy low cost manufacturing of large scaled wind generator, the number of slot per pole per phase should be reduced. For this reason, in this research, the number is selected as '1' which is the minimum number that stator can have. Based on the prototype machine, three types of machine for the analysis are selected, and various performances especially in terms of electrically balanced condition are also investigated. Moreover, in this paper, new inductance modeling of dual 3-phase considering cross-coupling between two inverter systems is proposed. The several inductances such as mutual-, synchronous inductances are studied. By using FEA, based on calculated the flux linkage of d and q-axis, the validity of the proposed inductance modeling is confirmed.

  • When compared to traditional bridge-type inverters, the dual-buck inverter has a higher reliability due to the fact that its bridge legs do not have a shoot-through problem. In this paper, the working principle of the dual-buck inverter is analyzed. A comparison of the working modes under full-cycle and half-cycle control is discussed. With half-cycle control, the inverter can realize a higher efficiency. However, this results in current zero-crossing distortion. The corresponding control strategy of the dual-buck inverter is proposed in order to realize both high efficiency and low current harmonic distortion. In addition, the system stability is analyzed. Dead-time is unnecessary due to the advantages of the topology. Thus, the current harmonic distortion can be further reduced. An inverter with the proposed control strategy has the advantages of high reliability, high efficiency and low current harmonic distortion. Finally, simulation and experimental results are given to verify the theoretical analysis.

  • This paper presents a new dual loop control using novel vector phase locked loop(VP-PLL) for a high power static var compensator(SVC) with three-level GTO voltage source inverter(VSI). Through circuit DQ-transformation, a simple dq-axis equivalent circuit is obtained. From this, DC analysis is carried out to obtain maximum controllable phase angle ${\alpha}_{max}$ per unit current between the three phase source and the switching function of inverter, and AC open-loop transfer function is given. Because ${\alpha}_{max}$ becomes small in high power SVC, this paper proposes VP-PLL for more accurate $\alpha$-control. As a result, the overall control loop has dual loop structure, which consists of inner VP-PLL for synchronizing the phase angle with source and outer Q-loop for compensating reactive power of load. Finally, the validity of the proposed control method is verified through the experimental results.

  • This paper presents a novel concept of phase swapping to associate multiple flux weakening ranges to a non-salient PM machine without altering any hardware of the machine. The proposed concept enables a dual three-phase machine to be operated with different displacement angles between the two three-phase windings. Hence, different flux weakening ranges using winding switching can be accomplished by applying this concept. It was also demonstrated that the proposed concept can be utilized for the discrete step as well as continuous operation of the machines. Any application requiring a wide speed range operation of up to thirteen times the base speed can benefit from this proposed concept. Analytical, simulation, and experimental results are provided to validate the effectiveness of the proposed concept.

  • In the single type mechanical compressor mounted on the refrigerated vehicle, one compressor is responsible for the refrigerator function of the air conditioner and the refrigerator, so it is difficult to maintain a certain refrigeration temperature in the summer. Particularly, in a mechanical compressor using an engine as a power source, the refrigeration quality is deteriorated due to unstable rotation of the engine. In this paper, we propose a three - phase inverter of a dual compressor system that uses an electric compressor separately from a mechanical compressor of a refrigerated vehicle. The output characteristics of the developed inverter were verified through a vehicle air conditioning simulator.

  • This paper aims to compare the performance of three phase induction motor drives using Five Leg Inverter (FLI) and Three Leg Inverter (TLI) configurations. An Indirect Field Oriented Control (IFOC) method using a TLI is well established and incorporated for high performance speed drives in various industries. The FLI dual motor drive system on the other hand shows good workability in the independent control of two induction motor drives simultaneously. In this experiment, the IFOC method is utilized for both drive systems, and Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation (SVPWM) is used to generate pulses for both inverters. For the FLI, the Double Zero Sequence (DZS) Injection technique is used to generate the modulation signal. The complete experiment setup is done by using a DSpace 1103 controller board. The individual motor performances are analyzed using similar schemes, equipment setups and controller parameter values. The results show similar speed performance response capability between the single motor operation using a TLI system and the two motor operation using a FLI system based on the variable speed range either in forward or reverse operation. They also show similar load rejection abilities. However, the single motor with a TLI has a better power quality aspect such as ripple current and total harmonics distortion (THD).
