  • Quality of noodle processed by addition of hot water extract powder from roasted safflower seed (RSHE) was investigated. Proximate compositions of RSHE was 4.70% of moisture, 32.63% of crude Protein, 6.52% of crude fat, 15.62% of crude ash and 40.53% of carbohydrate. There was no significant difference (p<0.05) in hunter's color value between noodles with and without RSHE. The ‘L’vague of noodle processed by addition of powder from roasted safflower seed (RSP) was very low and significantly different (p<0.05) from other products. With the increase of RSHE addition, the volume and weight of cooked noodles increased (R$^2$=0.9688). The breaking force of dry noodle decreased with the increase of RSHE addition. In the mastication test of cooked noodles, max. weight, strength and hardness increased with the increase of RSHE addition. Dry noodle with 0.3% and 0.5% RSHE recorded high rank, but that with RSP recorded the lowest rank in score of appearance and color by sensory evaluation. The noodle processed with 0.3∼0.5% RSHE showed high sensory quality.

  • Leaf rust is the most widespread and destructive fungal disease, and outbreaks have always caused considerable losses in wheat yields. Thus, worldwide increases in wheat production depend on the development of leaf rust-resistant wheat varieties. In this study, we evaluated the resistance of forty Korean wheat cultivars to leaf rust at the seedling stage. Only two Korean wheats, Ol and Jonong, were resistant to leaf rust, whereas the remaining thirty-eight Korean wheats were susceptible to leaf rust. The Ol and Jonong varieties presented larger dry seed weights and higher antioxidant activity in response to leaf rust than the susceptible wheat varieties. No differences in ${\beta}$-1,3-glucanase activity or chlorophyll content between resistant and susceptible wheat varieties were observed. Overall, these results are important for the development of wheat varieties that are highly resistant to leaf rust and to understand the underlying mechanisms that confer leaf rust resistance.

  • This study was done on the metabolism of chemical components during the seed development of ginseng. The changes of the chemical components were inspected in the following periods: from the early stage of flower organ formation to flowering time, from the early stage of fruiting to maturity, during the moisture stratification before sowing. From flower bud forming stage to meiosis stage, the changes in the fresh weight, dry weight, contents of carbohydrates, and contents of nitrogen compounds were slight while the content of TCA soluble phosphorus and especially the content of organic phosphorus increased markedly. From meiosis stage to microspore stage the fresh and dry weights increase greatly. Also, the total nitrogen content increases in this period. Insolub]e nitrogen was 62-70% of the total nitrogen content; the increase of insoluble nitrogen seems to have resulted form the synthesis of protein. The content of soluble sugar (reducing and non-reducing sugar) increases greatly but there was no observable increase in starch content. In this same period, TCA soluble phosphorus reached the maximum level of 85.4% of the total phosphorus. TCA insoluble phosphorus remained at the minimum content level of 14.6%. After the pollen maturation stage and during the flowering period the dry weight increased markedly and insolub]e nitrogen also increased to the level of 67% of the total nitrogen content. Also in this stage, the organic phosphorus content decreased and was found in lesser amounts than inorganic phosphorus. A rapid increase in the starch content was also observed at this stage. In the first three weeks after fruiting the ginseng fruit grows rapidly. Ninety percent of the fresh weight of ripened ginseng seed is obtained in this period. Also, total nitrogen content increased by seven times. As the fruits ripened, insoluble nitrogen increased from 65% of the total nitrogen to 80% while soluble nitrogen decreased from 35% to 20%. By the beginning of the red-ripening period, the total phosphoric acid content increased by eight times and was at its peak. In this same period, TCA soluble phosphorus was 90% of total phosphorus content and organic phosphorus had increased by 29 times. Lipid-phosphorus, nucleic acid-phosphorus and protein-phosphorus also increased during this stage. The rate of increase in carbohydrates was similar to the rate of increase in fresh weight and it was observed at its highest point three weeks after fruiting. Soluble sugar content was also highest at this time; it begins to decrease after the first three weeks. At the red-ripening stage, soluble sugar content increased again slightly, but never reached its previous level. The level of crude starch increased gradually reaching its height, 2.36% of total dry weight, a week before red-ripening, but compared with the content level of other soluble sugars crude starch content was always low. When the seeds ripened completely, more than 80% of the soluble sugar was non-reducing sugar, indicating that sucrose is the main reserve material of carbohydrates in ginseng seeds. Since endosperm of the ripened ginseng seeds contain more than 60% lipids, lipids can be said to be the most abundant reserve material in ginseng seeds; they are more abundant than carbohydrates, protein, or any other component. During the moisture stratification, ginseng seeds absorb quantities of water. Lipids, protein and starch stored in the seeds become soluble by hydrolysis and the contents of sugar, inorganic phosphorus, phospho-lipid, nucleic acid-phosphorus, protein phosphorus, and soluble nitrogen increase. By sowing time, the middle of November, embryo of the seeds grows to 4.2-4.7mm and the water content of the seeds amounts to 50-60% of the total seed weight. Also, by this time, much budding material has been accumulated. On the other hand, dry stored ginseng seeds undergo some changes. The water content of the seeds decreases to 5% and there is an observable change in the carbohydraes but the content of lipid and nitrogen compounds did not change as much as carbohydrates.

  • This study was conducted to determine the effects of seed storage method ($-20^{\circ}C$, $2^{\circ}C$ dry, $2^{\circ}C$ wet 30 days, $2^{\circ}C$ wet 60 days, stratification and room temperature) and shading treatment(control, 50%, 80%) on seed germination, seedling growth of endangered species, Iris dichotoma and Iris setosa. As a result, seed germination rate of I. dichotoma was the highest at 75% when seed were stored at $2^{\circ}C$ wet 60 days and then sown under non-shading condition. The seed of I. dichotoma belong to intermediate seed. Seed germination rate of I. setosa was the highest at 95% when seed were stored at $2^{\circ}C$ wet 60 days and then sown under 80% shading condition. The seed of I. setosa belong to recalcitrant seed. Seedlings of I. dichotoma and I. setosa showed not only the best seedling quality but also seedling vigor index in seed stored at $2^{\circ}C$ wet 60 days under non-shading condition, with the growth characteristics of plant height (6.4, 7.2 cm), number of leaves (3, 4), leaf width (4.6, 3.2 mm), leaf length (5.7, 6.8 cm), fresh weight (aerial/root part; 144/260, 97/153 mg), dry weight (aerial/root; 31/20, 17/17 mg) and seedling vigor index and modified seedling vigor index (13,895/9,479, 13,256/8,668). In this research, I. dichotoma and I. setosa seed were stored at $2^{\circ}C$ wet 60 days, and then sown in non-shading condition, seed germination rate was more than 75%, 90%, respectively, and production of superior quality seedlings.

  • This study was carried out to develop an effective seed propagation method for Thalictrum rochebrunianum var. grandisepalum (H. Lev.) Nakai by analyzing seed dormancy types and germination characteristics. Seeds were collected between September to October at Gangwon province, and well-selected seeds were used while being dry-stored at 4±1℃. The seed size ranged 4.52 × 1.58 ㎜ and the weight of thousand seeds were 1,603.5 ± 0.02 ㎎. The moisture content was 7.2%. Seeds were achene type, and morphology characters showed an elliptical shape and rough texture, and light brown in color. Moist-chilling treatment was conducted for dormancy breaking because the seeds had an undeveloped embryo of liner type. The embryo had developed during a moist-chilling period, constantly, and fully developed in 10 weeks. Consequently, it seemed to be non-deep complex or intermediate complex type of morphophysiological dormancy, and embryo dormancy was broken by wet-chilling for 10 weeks. After 10 weeks of wet-chilling treatment, seed germination began. Germination percentage was higher in dark condition raher than light condition and recorded the maximum at 25℃ in the dark (16.3%). A pre-soaking treatment with a combined plant growth hormones promoted germination and shortened T50. Specifically, seed germination of 84.5% was achieved by pre-soaking of seeds with a combined solution of 500 ㎎/L GA3 and 10 ㎎/L kinetin for 24 h after a wet-chilling treatment for 10 weeks. Thus the effect of plant growth hormones coupled with chilling temperature on seed breaking dormancy provide asubsequent growth of seedlings for successful plantation.

  • Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) is one of cool-season adapted perennial grass species and has been cultivated worldwide as a important forage and lawn grass. In this study, we evaluated the seed production of new tall fescue cultivar, 'Purum', which was cultivated in Korea. Agronomic aspects of tall fescue were determined using seed production and forage nutritive value of straw at the National Institute of Animal Science, RDA from 2012 to 2013. The heading date according to the seeding time displayed 2~3 days differences. The harvested seed yields were the largest (1,711 kg/ha) when seeding date at September $17^{th}$, whereas it decreased when planted ten days earlier or later than at that time. The thousand-grain weight of gathering seeds was 2 g, and the germination rate was 80 to 83% showing no significant differences among the different seeding times. The yield of fresh weight and dry matter were the largest (63,556 kg/ha and 16,926 kg/ha, respectively) when planted at September $17^{th}$. The dry matter yield was gradually decreased with delaying seeding time as 10 days period. However, nutritive values of straw did not showed significant differences.

  • The relationship between ADP-glucose pyrophosphorylase (AGP) activity and the characteristics of related pod setting in developing seed of soybean cv. Pungsannamulkong, Iksannamulkong, Geumjeongkong #1 and Danpaheuk was studied. AGP activity during the accumulate of the majority of dry matter in all cultivars suggested that this enzyme might be associated with this process. At the Vn and R1 stages, AGP activity of full-grown leaves of Pungsannamulkong, Iksannamulkong, Geumjeongkong #1 was the highest and then decreased progressively. However AGP activity of Danpaheuk was the lowest and also had lower seed weight. So regulation of matter accumulation in developing soybean seeds may also depend on AGP activity. AGP capacities as expressed by AGP activity seem to have a good predicting value for the dry matter of leaf and seed at R1 to R5 stages in our series of R3 stage genotypes. Western blots probed with antibody specific to the subunit of potato AGP revealed a single 60KD immunoreactive band that changed in intensity during the growth cycle in association with changes in total AGP activity.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of sowing date on yield component and yield in sprout-soybean. Six sprout-soybean cultivars were planted on three sowing dates in 2000 and 2001. 100-seed weight, number of seeds per pod, number of seeds, number of pods per plant, and ratio of empty pods distinct differences between sowing dates and cultivars. All yield components except the 100-seed weight and number of seeds per pod diminished recording where the sowing day will be late. The ratio of pods with two or three seeds was 77.5 from 80.9 percents. The ratio of two-seed pods were affected by sowing date. The yield of soybean of May 25 sowing was 290 kg/10a followed by June 15 and July 5 sowing with 269 kg/10a and 221 kg/10a, respectively Late sowing greatly decreased the yield of Doremikong, while yields of Tawonkong were more a less stable. In 2000, yield showed positive correlation with number of branches, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per plant, dry weight, leaf area, and oil content. While yield of 2001 showed positive correlation with number of nodes on main stem, stem thickness, number of pods per plant, dry weight, and leaf area.

  • This studies were conducted to basic information on growth characteristics and root yield in progeny the derived from different bolting years and to establish optimum seed production time in Angelica gigas. Plant height of early and mid-growing stages had decreased with each year increase in bolting year, but showed no significance in late growing stage at different bolting years. Root characteristics including root length, root diameter and dry root weight was slightly good and it had high root/ shoot ratio in third year seed production. respectively. Bolting rate showed that first year seed 38.1%, second year seed 10.4% and third year seed 1.2%, respectively. Therefore, optimum seed production time revealed third year seed for reduce bolting rate. Root yield at different bolting years showed average 1,690kg per hectare as fresh root weight on first year seed, 2,860kg on second year and 2,940kg on third year seed, respectively. A significant positive correlation was appeared between bolting rate and plant height in mid-growing stage. On the other hard, there was highly significant negative correlation between bolting rate and root yield.

  • In order to investigate vigor of rice seed pregerminated, some organic and inorganic component content, response of ecotypes, and effect of gibberellin treatment, under different levels of hastening of germination, were examined. Protein content was high in dried seed, the larger size in length of pregerminated seed, the less protein content, but lipid content was a reverse tendency to protein one. Potassium content was low in dried seed, the larger size in length of pregerminated seed, the more potassium content, but increase dramatically at above 10 mm in length of sprout. Magnesium content showed a same tendency to potassium one. The ability of regermination was high in early maturing cultivar, but almost lost in the pregerminated seeds with above 5 mm in length of sprout. The regermination percentage of dried seed was lower than that of pregerminated seed with 0.1∼0.5 mm in length, but was similar to that of pregerminated one with 1∼3 mm in length of sprout. The effect of gibberellin on regermination percentage was highest at 10 ppm and showed high with small sized one of pregerminated seed. The effect of gibberellin on plant height, fresh weight, and dry weight showed a same tendency to regermination percentage.
