  • The newly designed mole drainage plower which is attached to tractor is tested for work capacity comparing with the pulling by man animal and winch. Besides. the effect of desalinization by the mole drainage in reclaimed tideland was observed. The results as obtained in this experiment are as follows: 1. The mole drainage plower of tractor attachment has higher work capacity by 3 to 5 times than that of winch 2. The suitable soil moisture content to carry out the layout of mole drains is from 21 to 25 percent. 3. The new design mole drainage plower requires th lowest cost as comparing with the other methods. 4. Carrying out the mole drainage in reclaimed tideland it is effective in desalinization from 2 to 3 times than the only use of irrigation water. 5. The reasonable depth and interval of mole drains may be 60cm and 3m respectively. 6. The desalinization by the mole drainage increases the yield of rice from 40 to 45 percent in reclaimed tideland.

  • Drainage concrete pavement, unlike water permeable concrete pavement, is to preclude the pavement from overflowing with water, such as rain water, from infiltrating into earth by placing a border in the middle layer which makes water to flow through the surface of the border to the conduit. Drainage concrete pavement enhances car wheel resistance to slippery and wet road surface and imbibes noise caused by friction on the road. Also, by using pigment, it adds to the beauty of the environment. Drainage concrete pavement can be used for sidewalks, roadways, parking lots and expressways.

  • The numbers of geogrid-reinforced walls are widely used in Korea. This papers present the results of two failure case histories of geogrid-reinforced segmental retaining walls. The geological background of the construction sites, detailed construction sequences, and the amount of rainfall were examined. The failure of these reinforced walls are caused by the improper drainage system and foundation treatment, too sharpened curvature of corner work, and too high height of wall.

  • In recent years. finite element methods have been used with increasing effectiveness in analysis of displacements and stresses within soil masses. However, one of the weakest links in the analytical representations used in these methods is the models of the material behaviour. Herein is discribed a modification to the finite element methods that allows solution problems with realistic stress-strain relation for soils. A finite element program for the precision prediction of the stress distribution within foundation has been developed using the elasto-plastic Work-Hardening model. The developed program is verified by comparing the results of this study with the tested results for Sacramento river sand. The main results obtained from the numerical examples are as follows: The vertical total stress increments are insensitive to drainage and constitutive equation of materials. The horizontal total stress increments are considerably affected by the drainage and constitutive equation of materials. The maximum shear stresses are affected by the drainage only in elasto-ptastic meterirals. The excess pore water pressures and the volumetric strains not only are considerably affected by the constitutive equation of materials. but also have almost similar distribution.

  • Hot-dip galvanizing process is used widely in industry to achieve corrosion resistant coatings. Poor drainage during this process often leads to problems such as icicle formation and bridging In this work, mild steel specimens were hot-dip galvanized. Influence of the addition of bismuth, aluminum and both (bismuth and aluminum) to the zinc bath on the zinc drainage were determined. Bismuth additions improved the drainage significantly. Zinc bath containing 0.1 wt.% Bi and 0.025∼0.05 wt.% Al showed uniformity of coatings. Industrial trials with this bath composition showed reduction in zinc consumption, reduction of ash and dross, and good luster of workpiece.

  • At present, there are several problems related with sand mat which is used as a way to accelerate consolidation settlement, act like an underground drainage layer and increase trafficability simultaneously. First of all, the unbalance oft he demand and supply of sand is the one of the biggest problems, which makes not only price advance of sand but also delays a term of total construction work. Secondly, the damage of ecosystem and scenery is triggered by thoughtless sand dredging or mining. So, the need that the sand for sand mat should be replaced with a new environmental friendly material has been increased. Fiber mat may be one of the proper materials that suits the need. Therefore, we intended to compare the drainage properties of sand mat with those of fiber mat by experimental model tests. On the basis of the test results, fiber mat took shorter period of consolidation than sand mat and it's amount of settlement showed a little bit bigger than the other. In conclusion, the substitutability of fiber mat for sand mat could be placed highly in view of drainage efficiency. Furthermore, when Fiber mat is used, it has an advantage that spoil soil of the construction site or nearby site can be used for the purpose of increasing trafficability in addition to a role of drainage layer.

  • This paper presents the results of a scale model test to the effect of heat exchanger drainage method in retaining wall of weathered granite soil. Purpose to rise in the temperature of the heat wires inside the weathered granite soil is preventing the collapse of the retaining wall and drainage smoothly moved to the drainage layer. Especially using a spray gun to simulate the rainfall since the rainfall drainage work is important for the rainfall effect on soil, find the difference about displacement of the retaining wall, change of volume water content, drainage, earth pressure and change in the strain of the geosynthetic was effected to heat exchanger within the soil. The result from applying the heat exchanger method decreased the earth pressure and displacement of the wall and increased drainage of water.

  • There are insufficient models that find problems and solutions for accident prevention through risk assessment and suggest safe work process and work instruction from foundation works to finish work for accident decrease. This paper presents a quantitative risk assessment model by analysis of risk factors in each process such as earth works, drainage works, pavement works, appurtenant works and etc based on accident examples and investigation on actual condition in roads construction work. In addition, the safety management system was developed to perform risk assessment of construction and use it for effective safety training for labor.

  • Hydraulic analysis in a dam that has a single outlet of water can be made through a simple comparison between the total precipitation and the volume of discharged water. In case of tailing dams this estimation could yield an error because several drainage facilities are worked independently as well as simultaneously. In this research, a capability of the drainage system in the tailing dam of the old Sangdong Mine was analysed by the means of GIS technic. As a result of this study, it was expected that in the normal working condition of the whole drainage system, the flooding of water over the dam should not occur in spite of the consecutive precipitation during one hour with an intensity of 80.31 mm/hr, a probable precipitation within 100 years. It was, however, revealed that, if the drainage system did not work completely, the water could flood over the dam when the total precipitation reached 251.1 mm.

  • This study aimed to monitor a pilot-scale vertical flow reactor (VFR) system being operated in long-term for water quality control of pH-neutral mine drainage containing Fe, Mn and As, discharged in D mine site. The treatment systems of VFR and zero manganese reactor (ZMR) consisted of sand/limestone, and steel slag/limestone, respectively. The systems were operated during about six months in order to evaluate their long-term treatment efficiency It was observed that both pH and alkalinity of mine drainage were remarkably increased and more than 98% of Fe, As and Mn ions was continuously removed during the tested period of time. In conclusion, the field results of this work demonstrated that the vertical flow reactor system can effectively treat mine drainage contaminated by Fe, As and Mn.
