  • This paper proposed an Inter-Carrier-Interference (ICI) Canceling Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) receiver for 5G mobile system to support 500 km/h linear motor high speed terrestrial transportation service. A receiver in such high-speed train sees the transmission channel which is composed of multiple Doppler-shifted propagation paths. Then, a loss of sub-carrier orthogonality due to Doppler-spread channels causes ICI. The ICI Canceler is realized by the following three steps. First, using the Demodulation Reference Symbol (DMRS) pilot signals, it analyzes three parameters such as attenuation, relative delay, and Doppler-shift of each multi-path component. Secondly, based on the sets of three parameters, Channel Transfer Function (CTF) of sender sub-carrier number 𝒏 to receiver sub-carrier number 𝒍 is generated. In case of 𝒏≠𝒍, the CTF corresponds to ICI factor. Thirdly, since ICI factor is obtained, by applying ICI reverse operation by Multi-Tap Equalizer, ICI canceling can be realized. ICI canceling performance has been simulated assuming severe channel condition such as 500 km/h, 2 path reverse Doppler Shift for QPSK, 16QAM, 64QAM and 256QAM modulations. In particular, for modulation schemes below 16QAM, we confirmed that the difference between BER in a 2 path reverse Doppler shift environment and stationary environment at a moving speed of 500 km/h was very small when the number of taps in the multi-tap equalizer was set to 31 taps or more. We also confirmed that the BER performance in high-speed mobile communications for multi-level modulation schemes above 64QAM is dramatically improved by the use of a multi-tap equalizer.

  • It is important to localize trains precisely for the purpose of controlling them and there have been many studies designed to accomplish this without the need for wayside systems. Since trains run on fixed railway lines, it is possible to search in one direction to localize them. Moreover, it is also possible to know the shape of the line in advance. In the case of high speed trains, their speed and, therefore, their Doppler frequency is relatively high and the railway line is either linear or circular with a large radius. In this study, we utilize these features and propose a train localization method using the Doppler frequency of the signals transmitted from two points (base stations). We derive localization equations for a linear line, circular line, and mixed line (linear plus circular) respectively. Though Doppler radars are usually used to measure speed, the proposed method obtains the location information and the speed successively using the ratio of the doppler frequencies of two signals without knowing the location information or the speed. Computer simulations are performed to show the variation of the estimation error according to the train's location and the measurement error level. The conditions required to obtain the target error level and the increase in the estimation error according to the measurement error are compared between the proposed and conventional methods. The results show the superior performance and robustness of the proposed method.

  • In cellular mobile radio systems with frequency reuse, the interference signals degrade the channel estimation and signal detection performance due to the low signal-to-interference ratio near coverage boundaries. When the preamble pilot sequences from different cells are orthogonal or located in disjointed positions, they can be used for multi-cell channel estimation and interference cancellation. In time-varying channels caused by Doppler spread, data pilot symbols are needed for channel estimations. However, data pilot symbols are usually located in identical positions for the overhead reduction, which degrades the channel estimation performance. In this paper, we demonstrate a significant amount of performance improvement is achieved by multiplying different pseudonoise(PN) sequences to the data pilot symbols from adjacent interference cells. In particular, for detection scheme using maximal ratio combining(MRC) and inter-cell spatial demultiplexing(ISD), quantitative performance gain of spectral efficiency for different values of Doppler frequency and interference power is presented.

  • Bearing and frequency measurements of TMA (Target Motion Analysis) in passive line array SONAR have lower bearing rate and frequency doppler, and are not detected or tracked continuously because of various ocean environments. This is a main reason to effect the TMA performance and it takes a long time to get TMA solutions. We propose the bearing and frequency TMA(BFTMA) using accumulative batch estimation to solve the TMA problem of line array passive SONAR. The accumulative batch estimation structure is based on MLE (Maximum Likelihood Estimation) but used accumulative measurements. The accumulative batch estimation is applied for the BFTMA with nonlinear Kalman filter to estimate the target range, speed and course. Simulation and sea data analysis were carried out to verify the performance and applicability of the proposed techniques.

  • In OFDM systems, mobile channel degrades the system performance seriously. Therefore, channel estimation technique is required to compensate for the degradation from the channel effects. However, conventional channel estimations in frequency domain induce ICI which is induced from Doppler frequency. In addition, a linear interpolation method causes inaccurate channel estimation. In order to minimize the effect of the interference and interpolation error, the proposed method combines LS method and Kalman filtering algorithm. Channel impulse response is adaptively tracked by Kalman filtering based on the information from LS estimator. Simulation results are presented to verify the performance of the proposed channel estimation over mobile channel environment. Simulation results show that the proposed method can effectively compensate for channel degradation.

  • This paper presents channel estimation of an asynchronous W-CDMA reverse link using the interpolation and moving average algorithm in frequency-selective Rayleigh fading channel. The proposed algorithm is an interpolated decision-directed (IDD) block-wise moving average (BWMA) algorithm. The IDD-BWMA algorithm performs two- stage processes. The first stage performs data decision to make a virtual pilot channel by using linear interpolation channel estimation scheme. Then, the second stage performs the channel estimation of the “block-wise moving average” type by using a virtual pilot channel obtained in the first stage. By using Monte-Carlo computer simulations, we show that the proposed channel estimator is superior to other estimation schemes such as the WMSA(K=1) and DD-RAKE at higher Doppler frequencies, especially.

  • This study aims to evaluate the accuracy of retrieved horizontal winds with different quality control methods from three Doppler lidars deployed over the complex terrain during the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic games. To retrieve the accurate wind profile, this study also proposes two quality control methods to distinguish between meteorological signals and noises in the Doppler velocity field, which can be broadly applied to different Doppler lidars. We evaluated the accuracy of retrieved winds with the wind measurements from the nearby or collocated rawinsondes. The retrieved wind speed and direction show a good agreement with rawinsonde with a correlation coefficient larger than 0.9. This study minimized the sampling error in the wind evaluation and estimation, and found that the accuracy of retrieved winds can reach ~0.6 m s-1 and 3° in the quasi-homogeneous wind condition. We expect that the retrieved horizontal winds can be used in the high-resolution analysis of the horizontal winds and provide an accurate wind profile for model evaluation or data assimilation purposes.

  • The performance of underwater acoustic communication is greatly affected by multipath propagation and Doppler spread. This paper proposes a new communication technique, the Triangle Spread Carrier (TSC) technique, by modifying the existing Sweep Spread Carrier (SSC) technique that is strong in a multipath propagation environment. The proposed TSC technique is a form in which the up-chirp and down-chirp signals have repeated carriers, and each correlation function characteristic is used to estimate and correct the Doppler shift frequency of the receiving signal. To demonstrate the performance of the proposed TSC technique, we present the results of simulations using underwater channel simulators and sea trial conducted in the East Sea. When demodulating using only the estimated Doppler shift frequency as a result of the sea trial, the uncoded bit error rate was up to 0.194, but when the proposed method was applied, the uncoded bit error rate was reduced to 0.001.

  • This paper presents the performance evaluation of channel estimation algorithm using RLS algorithm lot W-CDMA reverse link over Rayleigh fading channels. By obtaining BER(Bit Error Rate) performance through computer simulations, the RLS(Recursive Least Square) algorithm is compared with the existing WMSA(Weighted Averaging)(K=1,3) and constant gain algorithm. The channel structure, modulation and pilot patterns are applied to the ARIB (Association of Radio Industries and Business) and 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) ITU-R proposal for the IMT-2000. The BER performance of RLS algorithm with linear interpolation is similar to that of WMSA(K=1) and slightly superior to that of constant gain algorithm at low Doppler frequencies. Also, RLS algorithm performance is better than that of the WMSA(K=1,3) and constant gain algorithms about 4dB at BER=2.0$\times$$10^{-2}$ and Doppler frequencies $F_D$=320Hz. With increasing Doppler frequency, therefore, the BER performance of RLS algorithm with linear interpolation is superior to WMSA(K=L.3) and constant rain algorithms.

  • When measuring the radiating noise of an underwater moving source, the range information between the acoustic source and the receiver is an important evaluation factor, and the measurement standards such as a receiver position, a moving source depth and a speed are set. Although there is a method of using the cross correlation as a method of finding the range of the underwater moving source, this method requires a time synchronization process. In this paper, we proposed the method to estimate the range by comparing the Doppler frequency difference of the theoretically calculated multipath signal with the Doppler frequency difference of the multipath signal estimated from the received signal. The proposed method does not require a separate time synchronization process. Simulations were performed to verify the performance, and the ranging error of the proposed method reduced by about 95 % than that of the conventional method.
