  • In this paper, several modal identification techniques for output-only structural systems are extensively investigated. The methods considered are the power spectral method, the frequency domain decomposition method, the Ibrahim time domain method, the eigensystem realization algorithm, and the stochastic subspace identification method. Generally, the power spectral method is most widely used in practical area, however, the other methods may give better estimates particularly for the cases with closed modes and/or with large measurement noise. Example analyses were carried out on typical structural systems under three different loading cases, and the identification performances were examined throught the comparisons between the estimates by various methods.

  • An efficient domain/boundary decomposition method is applied for heat transfer problems with non-linear thermal radiation boundaries. The whole domain of solids or structures is considered as set of subdomains, an interface, and radiation interfaces. In a variational formulation, simple penalty functions are introduced to connect an interface or radiation interfaces with neighboring subdomains that satisfy continuity conditions. As a result, non-linear finite element computations due to the thermal radiation boundaries can be localized within a few subdomains or radiation interfaces. Therefore, by setting up suitable solution algorithms for the governing finite element equations, the computational efficiency can be improved considerably. Through a set of numerical examples, these distinguishing characteristics of the present method are investigated in detail.

  • In general, transform domain adaptive filters show faster convergence speed than the time domain adaptive filters, but the amount of calculation increases dramatically as the filter order increases. This problem can be solved by making use of the subband structure in transform domain adaptive filters. In this paper, to increase the convergence speed on the generalized subband decomposition FIR adaptive filters, a structure of the adaptive filter with subfilter of dyadic sparsity factor in wavelet transform domain is designed. And, in this adaptive filter, the equivalent input in transform domain is derived and, by using the input, the convergence properties for the LMS algorithm is analyzed and evaluated. By using this sub band adaptive filter, the inverse system modeling and the periodic noise canceller were designed, and, by computer simulation, the convergence speeds of the systems on LMS algorithm were compared with that of the subband adaptive filter using DFT(discrete Fourier transform).

  • Damage of reinforced concrete panel subjected to blast load using parallel and domain decomposition is analyzed. The numerical results are sensitive to the mesh size because blast waves are generated during the extremely short term. In order to investigate the effect of mesh size on the blast wave, the analysis results from various wave mesh size using AUTODYN, the explicit finite element analysis program, were compared with existing experimental results. The smaller mesh size was, the higher accuracy was. However, in this case, the analysis was inefficient. Therefore, in order to increase numerical efficiency, the parallel analysis using decomposed method based on Euler and Lagrangian description was performed. Finally, the decomposed method using both the structure domain based on Lagrange description and the blast wave domain based on Euler description was more efficient than the decomposed method using only the Lagrange mesh on structure domain.

  • A new coupling method of Element-Free Galerkin Method(EFGM) and Boundary Element Method(BEM) using the domain decomposition method is presented in this paper. This proposed methodology is that the problem domain is decomposed into sub-domains being modeled by the EFGM and BEM respectively and the respective EFGM and BEM domains share a partially overlapped region over an entire domain. Then, the each sub-domain is separately computed and the variables on common region are iteratively updated until converging. It is an important note that in the developed coupling method, there is no need to combine the coefficient matrices of EFGM and BEM sub-domains, in contrast with the other conventional coupling methods. In the first part of this paper, a theory of EFGM and BEM is summarized, and then a brief introduction of domain decomposition method is described. Then, a new coupling method is presented. Also, patch test and Some numerical examples are studied to verify stability, accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method, in which numerical performance of the method is compared with that of conventional method such as EFGM-BEM variational coupling method, EFGM and BEM.

  • In this paper, we analyze the reconstruction error in the modeling of flow field on BFS(Backward Facing Step). In order for the mathematical modelling of a density on the field, the spatial and temporal modes are extracted by POD(Proper Orthogonal Decomposition) method. After formulating the modeling error, we summarize the relationship between the energy strength and the reconstruction errors. Moreover the allowable modeling error limits in the flow control point of view are confined by analysing in the frequency domain as well as time domain of the reconstructed data.

  • Modulated components of a speech signal are frequently used for speech coding, speech recognition, and speech synthesis. Time-frequency representation (TFR) reveals some information about instantaneous frequency, instantaneous bandwidth and boundary of each component of the considering speech signal. In many cases, the extraction of AM-FM components corresponding to instantaneous frequencies is difficult since the Fourier spectra of the components with time-varying instantaneous frequency are overlapped each other in Fourier frequency domain. In this paper, an efficient method decomposing speech signal into AM-FM components is proposed. A variable bandwidth filter is developed for the decomposition of speech signals with time-varying instantaneous frequencies. The variable bandwidth filter can extract AM-FM components of a speech signal whose TFRs are not overlapped in timefrequency domain. Also, amplitude and instantaneous frequency of the decomposed components are estimated by using Hilbert transform.

  • Conventional fractal image compression methods have many problems in searching time for matching domain block. Proposed method is an improved method of Fisher's Quadtree Decomposition in terms of time, compression ratio, and PSNR. This method determines range block in advance using QR algorithm. First, input image is partitioned to $4{\times}4$ range block and then recomposition is performed from bottom level to specified level. As a result, this proposed method achieves high encoding and decoding speed, high compression ratio, and high PSNR than Fisher's Quadtree Decomposition method.

  • A coupled thermal/structural analysis of mechanical ablation is performed based on domain/boundary decomposition and finite element method. The ablative material non-linearity and boundary non-linearity can be easily localized within a few subdomains and/or on the boundary interfaces. An enthalpy method is applied to simplify the effect of heat of pyrolysis in the ablative subdomains. In addition, maximum in-plane shear stress is considered as a surface recession criterion for the mechanical ablation simulation. The basic characteristics of the proposed method are examined carefully through numerical experiments.
