Silicon nitride samples with aligned whisker seeds were prepared with different amounts of yttria and alumina as the sintering additives. Their sintering behaviors and the microstructural developments between $1850^{\circ}C$ and $2050^{\circ}C$ were examined. The sample with larger amount of the sintering additives showed faster densification and grain growth. Even though addition of the aligned whisker seeds slightly retarded densification of silicon nitride, it improved the flexural strength and the fracture toughness. Both the flexural strength and the fracture toughness of silicon nitride with the aligned whisker seeds were increased as the amount of the sintering additives was increased.

Cellulose nanofibers from microfibril cellulose (MFC) was prepared by hydrobromic acid (HBr) treatment at different concentrations. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite films at various loading level of nanofibers were manufactured by a film casting method. The analysis of degree of polymerization (DP), crystallinity ($X_c$) and molecular weight ($M_w$) of cellulose after acid treatment was conducted. The mechanical and thermal properties of the cellulose nanofibers reinforced PVA films were characterized using tensile tests and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The DP and $M_w$ of MFC by HBr hydrolysis considerably decreased, but $X_c$ showed no significant change. After acid hydrolysis, the diameter of cellulose nanofibers was in the range of 100 to 200 nm. The thermal stability of the films was steadily improved with the increase of nanofiber loading. There was a significant increase in the tensile strength of PVA composite films with the increase in MFC loading. Finally, 5 wt.% nanofiber loading exhibited the highest tensile strength and thermal stability of PVA composite films.
Some physical properties of Ni-Cr based alloy for porcelain veneering were compared after repeated casting without the addition of any new alloy. The specimen were cast in a centrifugal caster with an oxygen-propane torch at optimum temperature. The obtained results were as follows: 1. The yield strength and hardness of the second generation were no significant differences compared with first generation but the yield strength and hardness of the third generation slightly decrased. 2. The ultimate tensile strength and elongation appeared to decrease slightly in second, third generations. 3. The tensile fractured facets of the first generation specimen were normal in all specimen, but in the second generation there were six tensile specimen out of ten, in the third there were four tensile specimen out of ten.

Ti-6Al-4V extra low interstitial (ELI) alloy has been widely used as an orthopedic implant material because of its excellent biocompatibility, corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. However, V-free titanium alloys such as Ti-6%Al-7%Nb and Ti-5%Al-2.5%Fe have recently been developed because of the toxicity of V. Hydroxyapatite (HA) is used as a coating material on Ti or Ti biomaterials due to its good biocompatibility. However, HA coated on Ti alloy causes a problem for tissue by peeling off during usage. Therefore, such peeling off during long time usage can be suppressed by adding HA in Ti or Ti alloy composites. The aim of this study was to manufacture an ultra fine grained (UFG) Ti-Nb-HA bulk alloy, which is usually difficult to fabricate using melting and casting technology, by rapid sintering process using high energy mechanical milled (HEMM) powder.
To improving the mechanical properties of Mg alloys at high temperature, we investigated the mechanical properties at high temperature and the change of microstructure of Mg-6 wt%Zn-0.4 wt%Mn and Mg-6 wt%Zn-0.4 wt%Mn-1 wt%Ag alloys on age treatment that have a stable MgZn phase at high temperature and $AgMg_4$ improving yield stress. In order to predict thermodynamic data of Mg alloys, a phase diagram and precipitation phase were calculated using a thermodynamic program, and it was confirmed that the MgZn and $AgMg_4$ phase existed as main precipitation in this alloys. The experimental data examined using DSC and XRD were comparable with the calculated data for reliability. In order to analysis the microstructure and precipitate phase during aging treatment, it was measured by SEM/EDS and TEM. Lastly, mechanical properties of the MgZn and $AgMg_4$ phase were measured by a tensile test at high temperature.

Loss of fracture resistance due to thermal aging degradation is a potential limiting factor affecting the long-term (80+ year) viability of nuclear reactors. To evaluate the effects of decades of aging in a practical time frame, accelerated aging must be employed prior to mechanical characterization. In this study, a variety of chemically and microstructurally diverse austenitic stainless steels were aged between 0 and 30,000 h at 290-400 ℃ to simulate 0-80+ years of operation. Over 600 static fracture tests were carried out between room temperature and 400 ℃. The results presented include selected J-R curves of each material as well as K0.2mm fracture toughness values mapped against aging condition and ferrite content in order to display any trends related to those variables. Results regarding differences in processing, optimal ferrite content under light aging, and the relationship between test temperature and Mo content were observed. Overall, it was found that both the ferrite volume fraction and molybdenum content had significant effects on thermal degradation susceptibility. It was determined that materials with >25 vol% ferrite are unlikely to be viable for 80 years, particularly if they have high Mo contents (>2 wt%), while materials less than 15 vol% ferrite are viable regardless of Mo content.
Ion beam assisted crystallization behavior of sol-gel derived $PbTiO_3$ thin films, deposited on bare silicon(100) substrates by spin-casting method, has been investigated. Ar ion bombardment was directly conducted on the spincoated film surface with or without heating the film from room temperature to $300^{\circ}C$. Ion dose was changed from $5{\times}10^{15}$ to $7.5{\times}10^{16}$$Ar^-/cm^2$. Formation of (110) oriented perovskite phase was obseerved with ion dose above $5{\times}10^{16}\; Ar^+/cm^2$. Crystallization of $PbTiO_3$ thin film could be enhanced with increasing the Air ion dose, or heating the substrate during ion bombardment. Crystallization of the $PbTiO_3$ films by ion bombardment was related to the local heating effect during ion bombardment.
Several aluminum based alloys were fabricated by a twin roll strip casting mill. As-cast microstructures and microsegregations of these aluminum alloys were investigated by means of optical microscope, scanning electron microscope and electron probe micro analysis. Clear distinction on microsegregation among the alloy systems was observed, that is, A1235 and A8011 alloys showed diffused segregation in the middle of the strip, while A3003 and A5086 alloys revealed a centerline segregation consisted of lamellar structure. Above center line segregation was resulted from enrichment of the alloying elements such as Mn, Fe, Cu, Si and eutictic reaction in central region of the alloy strip.
We have prepared new water-swollen chitosan-$Ag^+$ complex membranes and studied their permeation and separation behavior for propylene and propane gases. The $Ag^+$ containing chitosan complex membranes were prepared from chitosan and $AgNO_3$ aqueous solution. The $AgNO_3$ and water content in the membrane were controlled by adjusting $AgNO_3$ concentration of casting solution. The permeation properties of propylene and propane were investigated as a function of $AgNO_3$ concentration, and various operation conditions. High permeability of above 17 barrer and high selectivity of above 170 could be obtained with the membranes prepared from 3 M $AgNO_3$ aqueous solution. Periodic regeneration test confirmed these membranes could be very useful for the separation of propylene/propane and other olefin/paraffin separation.

It is expected that an intelligent broadcasting service (IBS) will be able to provide broadcast programs based on user preference and program-associated information (metadata) in order to assist users in easy navigation of the program content being broadcast. In this way, users will be able to access program content anytime, anywhere, and in the manner they wish. This type of IBS will be a basis for future broadcasting services such as customized broadcasting or personal casting. In this paper, we introduce an agent-based multimedia broadcasting framework using the Foundation for Intelligent Physical Agents (FIPA) and MPEG-7 technologies within MPEG-21. We use a FIPA implementation called FIPA open source as a platform for exchanging user preferences and program information as FIPA messages between a server and its clients. The user preference is modeled as the User Preference description scheme in MPEG-7 multimedia description schemes. We discuss a framework structure and implementation for the IBS.
