  • Recently, friction stir welding of dissimilar materials has become one of the biggest issues in lightweight and eco-friendly bonding technology. In this study, a lightweight torsion beam axle, which is an automobile chassis component, was used in the welding to cast aluminum material. The friction stir welding process of A357 cast aluminum and FB590 high-strength steel as well as the effects of the process parameters were investigated and optimized using a novel definitive screening design (DSD). ANOVA was used to predict the importance of the process parameters with 13 degradation experiments using the proposed DSD. Also, FSWed experiments were conducted using an optical microscope analysis to investigate the tensile strength behavior in the weld area. In addition to determining the interaction between the tool's rotational speed and the plunge speed, results indicate that the influence of the plunge depth was the most significant.

  • Clad steel has good corrosion resistance and mechanical properties arising from the hot rolling of dissimilar metals, such as carbon steel and stainless steel. However both good corrosion resistance from the cladding plate material(stainless steel) and mechanical properties from the base plate material (carbon steel) are difficult to obtain because the different steels display opposite behaviors during the cladding process. In order to make clad steel for application in the hulls of ships, proper materials selection and heat-treatment conditions are necessary. In this study, mechanical properties of base plate materials with different chemical composition were evaluated according to heat condition of cladding plate material.

  • In this paper, joints of Cu-1Cr-0.1Zr alloy to STS316L were performed by friction welding method. Cu-1Cr-0.1Zr alloy is attractive candidate as nuclear power plant material and exibit the best combination of high sts good electrical and thermal conductivity of any copper alloy examined. The stainless steel is a structural material who alloy acts as a heat sink material for the surface heat flux in the first wall. So, in this paper, not only the develop optimizing of friction welding with more reliability and more applicabililty but also the development of in-process rear quility(such as strength and toughness) evaluation technique by acoustic emission for friction welding of such nuclear component of Cu-1Cr-0.1Zr alloy to STS316L steel were performed.

  • Merits, attributes and challenges associated with the application of analytical modeling in electronics and photonics materials science are addressed, based mostly on the author's research during his tenure with Bell Labs, University-of-California, Portland State University, and small business innovative research (SBIR) ERS Co., USA. The emphasis is on practically important, yet often paradoxical, i.e., intuitively non-obvious, material behaviors. It is concluded that when material reliability is crucial, ability to effectively quantify it is imperative, and that analytical modeling is the most suitable, although never straightforward, technique to understand, explain and quantify material behaviors, especially in extreme, extraordinary and paradoxical situations.

  • The dynamic propagation of an interface crack between two dissimilar functionally graded layers under anti-plane shear is analyzed using the integral transform method. The properties of the functionally graded layers vary continuously along the thickness. A constant velocity Yoffe-type moving crack is considered. Fourier transform is used to reduce the problem to a dual integral equation, which is then expressed to a Fredholm integral equation of the second kind. Numerical values on the dynamic energy release rate (DERR) are presented. Followings are helpful to increase of the resistance of the interface crack propagation of FGM: a) increase of the gradient of material properties; b) increase of the material properties from the interface to the upper and lower free surface; c) increase of the thickness of FGM layer. The DERR increases or decreases with increase of the crack moving velocity.

  • The characteristics on the extension of the CED(Crack energy density) concept to the interface kinked crack problems in a dissimilar material are examined. Each mode contributions of CED are found by symmetric and antisymmetric components and domain independent integrals. Finite element calculation is carried out to simulate the Interface kinked crack growth on bimaterial. The focus is the establishment of fracture criterion with CED and finding the orientation of crack extension. From the results, a prediction about the extension behavior of an interface kinked crack can be done. And we show that CED can be a parameter to indicate fracture criterion at an Interface kinked crack.

  • Dissimilar friction welding were produced using 15(mm) diameter solid bar in chrome molybedenum steel(KS SCM440) to carbon steel(KS S45C) to investigate their mechanical properties. The main friction welding parameters were selected to endure good quality welds on the basis of visual examination, tensile tests, Vickers hardness surveys of the bond of area and H.A.Z and microstructure investigations. The specimens were tested as-welded and post-weld heat treated(PWHT). The tensile strength of the friction welded steel bars was increased up to 100% of the S45C base metal under the condition of all heating time. Optimal welding conditions were n=2,000(rpm), $P_1=60(MPa),\;P_2=100(MPa),\;t_1=4(s),\;t_2=5(s)$ when the total upset length is 5.4 and 5.7(mm), respectively. The peak of hardness distribution of the friction welded joints can be eliminated by PWHT. Two different kinds of materials are strongly mixed to show a well-combined structure of macro-particles without any molten material and particle growth or any defects.

  • Abdi's numerical method(ref.13) for representing a stress singularity by shifting the mid-side nodes of isoparametric elements is reviewed. A simple technique to obtain the optimal position of the mid-side nodes in quadratic isoparametric finite element is presented. From this technique we can directly obtain the position of the side-nodes adjacent to the crack tip. It is also observed that the present technique provides good accuracy for the expression of the opening displacement and the determination of the mid-side nodes for more wide range of material properties than that obtained by Abdicant the finite element method is applied to determine stress intensity factors for pressurized crack perpendicular to and terminating at the interface of two bonded dissimilar materials. A proper definition for stress intensity factors of a crack perpendicular to bimaterial interface is provided. It is based upon a near-tip displacement solutions on the crack surface for interface crack between two dissimilar materials. Numerical testing is carried out with the eight-node and six-node elements. The results obtained are compared with the previous solutions.

  • Due to the electric power shortage in summer season and regulation of freon refrigerant, the application of gas absorption refrigeration and hot water systems are considerably increasing trend. But, this system consists of condenser, heat exchanger, supply pipe and radiator etc. which are easily corroded by acidity and dissolved oxygen and gases. In result, this system occurs scale attachment and corrosion damage like pitting and crevice corrosion. In this study, electrochemical polarization test of heat exchanger tubing material (copper, aluminium brass, 30% cupronickel(30% Cu-Ni)) was carried out in 60% lithium bromide solution at $95^{\circ}C$. As a result of polarization test, corrosion behavior by impressed potential and local corrosion. such as galvanic corrosion, pitting corrosion behavior, of tubing materials was investigated. The main results obtained are as follows: (1) The effect of pitting and crevice corrosion control of 30% cupronickel in 60% LiBr solution at $95^{\circ}C$ is very excellent. (2) Dissimilar metal corrosion of 30% cupronickel coupling to aluminium bronze is the most sensitive. (3) Current density behavior of tube materials by impressed potential is high in order of copper > aluminium brass > 30% cupronickel.
