This paper presents some proposed methods for discontinuum analysis with rock discontinuities data acquisited in tunnel design stage. The limit equilibrium method for rock block sliding and falling proposed in this paper can consider the tunnel excavation and support stage, and, to the extent, the standard deviations and means of joint set orientation. Simple Distinct Elemet modelling methods are recommended in estimating the stability of tunnels in jointed rock masses. Because, the simple models are likely to show more consistent and clear than very complex model with finite joint length and joint deviation parameters.
In this study, the load transfer mechanism of tendon-grout interface of rock anchors has been examined through a series of static pull-out tests conducted on the model rock anchors constructed in the natural and artificial rock masses of granite and concrete, respectively. Several rock masses with horizontal discontinuities have been prepared to study the effects of weak planes on the shear stress distribution in tendon-grout interface. As a result, for the rock anchors constructed in the rock mass without discontinuities, stress concentration occurs on the upper part of the tendon-grout interface. On the contrary, as the frequency or the number of discontinuities increases, the shear stress distribution along the depth tends to be uniform. Also, an experimental equation about shear stress distribution between tendon-grout interface can be made by the regression of test results. The shear stresses computed from the experimental results between the rock surface and the depth of 2~3 times the tendon diameter are smaller than those from theory. Below the depth, the reverse can be observed.

Discontinuities considerably affect the mechanical and hydraulic properties of rock mass. These properties of the rock mass are influenced by the geometry of the discontinuities to a great extent. This paper aims to render an account of the geometrical parameters of several discontinuity sets related to the surrounding rock mass of Rudbar Lorestan Pumped Storage Power Plant powerhouse cavern making use of the linear and areal (circular and rectangular) sampling methods. Taking into consideration quite a large quantity of scanline and the window samplings used in this research, it was realized that the areal sampling methods are more time consuming and cost-effective than the linear methods. Having corrected the biases of the geometrical properties of the discontinuities, density (areal and volumetric) as well as the linear, areal and volumetric intensity accompanied by the other properties related to four sets of discontinuities were computed. There is an acceptable difference among the mean trace lengths measured using two linear and areal methods for the two joint sets. A 3D discrete fracture network generation code (3DFAM) has been developed to model the fracture network based on the mapped data. The code has been validated on the basis of numerous geometrical characteristics computed by use of the linear, areal sampling methods and volumetric method. Results of the linear sampling method have significant variations. So, the areal and volumetric methods are more efficient than the linear method and they are more appropriate for validation of 3D DFN (Discrete Fracture Network) codes.
One of the problems that should be solved in Text-To-Speech (TTS) is discontinuities at unit-joining points. To cope with this problem, a smoothing method using a low-pass filter is employed in this paper, In the proposed soothing method, a filter coefficient that controls the amount of smoothing is determined according to contort information to be synthesized. This method efficiently reduces both discontinuities at unit-joining points and artifacts caused by undesired smoothing. The amount of smoothing is determined with discontinuities around unit-joins points in the current synthesized speech and discontinuities predicted from context. The discontinuity predictor is implemented by CART that has context feature variables. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, a corpus-based concatenative TTS was used as a baseline system. More than 6075 of listeners realized that the quality of the synthesized speech through the proposed smoothing is superior to that of non-smoothing synthesized speech in both naturalness and intelligibility.

This paper provides a novel extended Moving Least Squares(MLS) difference method for the potential problem with weak and strong discontinuities. The conventional MLS difference method is enhanced with jump functions such as step function, wedge function and scissors function to model discontinuities in the solution and the derivative fields. When discretizing the governing equations, additional unknowns are not yielded because the jump functions are decided from the known interface condition. The Poisson type PDE's are discretized by the difference equations constructed on nodes. The system of equations built up by assembling the difference equations are directly solved, which is very efficient. Numerical examples show the excellence of the proposed numerical method. The method is expected to be applied to various discontinuity related problems such as crack problem, moving boundary problem and interaction problems.
Random properties of discontinuities were attributed to the limitation of test methods and lack of obtained data. Therefore, the uncertainties are pervasive and inevitable in rock slope engineering as well as other geotechnical engineering fields. The probabilistic analysis has been proposed to deal properly with the uncertainty. However, previous probabilistic approaches do not take account of the condition of kinematic instability but consider only kinetic instability. In this study, in order to overcome the limitation of the previous studies, the geometric characteristics as well as the shear strength characteristics in discontinuities are taken account into the probabilistic analysis. Then, the new approach to evaluate the probability of failure is suggested. The results of the deterministic analysis which was carried out to compare with the result of the probabilistic analysis, are somewhat different from those of the probabilistic approach. This is because the selected and used data in the deterministic approach do not take account of the random properties of discontinuities.

The stability condition of rock slopes is greatly affected by the geometry and strength parameters of discontinuities in the rock masses. Rock slopes Involving movement of rock blocks on discontinuities are failed by one or combination of the three basic failure modes-plane, wedge, and toppling. In rock mechanics, practically all the parameters such as the joint set characteristics, the rock strength properties, and the loading conditions are always subject to a degree of uncertainty. Therefore, a reasonable assessment of the rock slope stability has to include the excavation of the multi-failure modes, the consideration of uncertainties of discontinuity characteristics, and the decision on stabilization measures with favorable cost conditions. This study was performed to provide a new numerical model of the deterministic analysis, reliability analysis, and reliability-based optimization for rock slope stability. The sensitivity analysis was carried out to verify proposed method and developed program; the parameters needed for sensitivity analysis are design variables, the variability of discontinuity properties (orientation and strength of discontinuities), the loading conditions, and rock slope geometry properties. The design variables to be optimized by the reliability-based optimization include the cutting angle, the support pressure, and the slope direction. The variability in orientations and friction angle of discontinuities, which can not be considered in the deterministic analysis, has a greatly influenced on the rock slope stability. The stability of rock slopes considering three basic failure modes is more influenced by the selection of slope direction than any other design variables. When either plane or wedge failure is dominant, the support system is more useful than the excavation as a stabilization method. However, the excavation method is more suitable when toppling failure is dominant. The case study shows that the developed reliability-based optimization model can reasonably assess the stability of rock slopes and reduce the construction cost.

Long-term shear behavior of the rock discontinuities should be analyzed and its stability should be evaluated to ensure the long-term stability of a high-level radioactive waste disposal repository. The long-term shear behavior of the discontinuities can be modeled with creep and RSF models. The shear creep test, velocity step test, and slide-hold-slide test can be performed to determine their model parameters or analyze the shear behavior by experiments under various conditions. Testing apparatuses for direct shear, triaxial compression, and biaxial shear were mainly used and improved to reproduce the thermo-hydro-mechanical conditions of local bedrock, and it was confirmed that the shear behavior could vary. In order to design a high-level radioactive waste disposal site in Korea, the long-term behavior of rock discontinuities should be investigated in consideration of rock types, thermo-hydro-mechanical conditions, metamorphism, and restoration of shear resistance.

This study was carried out to increase the efficiency of site investigation through the evaluation of the applicable methods of investigation for cutting slope design. In an effort to find out the applicability of the method employed during the slope investigation, some tests were carried out on 6 subjects i.e location of weak zones, characteristics of discontinuities, distribution of strata, in situ tests for geo-technical properties, laboratory test and estimation of weathering. The method was highly applicable and produced expected results during the test of weak zones, discontinuities and distribution of strata. In order to apply the method to in- situ test for geo-technical properties and laboratory test on soil and rock slope, a statistic analysis of the existing data were required in advance. However its design applicability on rock slope was good although actual cases of application were not many due to limitation of the cases for investigation. The method was frequently referenced but not actually applied for anti seismic design test and estimation of weathering.
This paper presents the results of sensitivity analysis based on an example study to verify a newly developed reliability-based model for rock slopes considering uncertainties of discontinuities and failure modes-plane, wedge, and toppling. The parameters that are needed for sensitivity analysis are the variability of discontinuity properties (orientation and strength of discontinuities), the loading conditions, and the rock slope geometry. The variability in orientation and friction angle of discontinuities, which can not be considered in the deterministic analysis, has a great influence on the rock slope stability, The stability of rock slopes including failure modes is more influenced by the selection of dip direction of cutting rock face than any other design variables, The example study shows that the developed reliability-based analysis model can reasonably assess the stability of rock slope.
