Performance Evaluation of 2-Dimensional Light Source using Mercury-free Flat Fluorescent Lamps for LCD Backlight Applications

  • Recently, 2-dimensional flat light sources have been attracting much attention for its use in LCD backlight applications because of its high luminous efficiency and uniformity. A long-gap discharge, mercury-tree flat fluorescent lamp has been developed, which shows a high brightness ($>5000\;cd/m^2$) and high luminous efficacy (60 lm/W). Additionally, it has a wide operating margin and stable driving condition with the aid of an auxiliary electrode. For driving the lamp, a narrow pulse power to maintain the glow discharge state is required. Since there has been no research for this kind of lamp driving, this paper proposes a newly developed short-pulse, high-voltage lamp-driving scheme. The proposed lamp system uses a ballast with a coupled-inductor in order to raise the short pulse voltage up to the lamp ignition level and to obtain energy-recovery action during the glow discharge mode. The operation principles are presented and also the system performances such as the lighting efficiency, spatial and angular uniformities are evaluated by hardware experiments. The results show that the proposed lighting system is a good candidate for the next-generation of LCD backlight systems.

  • This paper was development a discharge lamp ballast in order to wave improvement of high power factor and high efficiency. The discharge lamp ballast consists of a power factor correction circuit and a correction circuit on switching frequency of inverter. Instead of passive power factor circuit, active power factor circuit is adopted. Because it has the advantage of size, weight, total harmonic distortion, out DC voltage regulation, and power factor. The power factor circuit with MG34262 is controlled by variable frequency discontinuous mode. Results experiments, discharge lamp ballast is showed to have excellent for the proposed electronic ballast's operation and characteristics.

  • Discharge of the flat lamp lighting source research are requested very much. For improving brightness, life time, efficiency of flat lamp, plasma diagnosis of the flat lamp lighting source to understand property of lighting source is very important, distance of discharge electrode is 5.5mm and width is 16.5mm, we measured electron temperature and electron density measured with single langmuir probe in flat lamp, we tested the discharge from 100 Torr to 300 Torr pressure, the Pulse is rectangular pulse with frequency 20kHz and Duty ratio 20%. Resultly, electron temperature decreases and electron density increase as increase the gas pressure and electron temperature decreases and electron density increase as increase the voltage.

  • A prototype electrodeless sulfur lamp was developed and investigated the spectroscopic characteristics. The emission spectra of $S_2$ in the microwave-discharged eletrodeless sulfur lamp (ESL) were studied at various input power. The emission spectra of the ESL shift to longer wavelength with increasing of the input power. We have shown that this is due to the self reversal effect in the high pressure gas discharge. We also show that the self reversal effect increases as the rotation of the discharged bulb. The spectral distribution of the ESL shifts about 45 nm toward visible region from UV region due to the rotation of the lamp bulb.

  • In this study, several experiment is executed to analyze properties of Electrodeless Discharge Lamp using H-Discharge. 1. The operating frequency of this lamp is $2.45{\sim}2.65$[MHz] 2. The color of light is mild-white. And, it is shifted in the direction of red in low temperature. 3. In ambient temperature under $10^{\circ}C$, luminous efficiency is decreased precipitously. Therefore, research for improvement discharge-characteristic in low temperature need. 4. Discharge-characteristic stable between $160{\sim}240$[V]. And, luminous output is inverse proportion to coil-voltage. 5. When input-voltage is decreased continuously unstable section exist.

  • This paper presents that what's the right EOLL(End of Lamp Life) phenomenon on fluorescent lamp and how to detect it according to the lamp status. In normal end of life situation for fluorescent lamps is emitter depletion of the cathodes. So, in most cases, the discharge will extinguish and the lamp will not start. But if the ballast is capable of sustaining the discharge, a new condition arise. Especially, the T4 and T5 lamp which has a short distance from cathode to socket of lamp future must have the EOLL Protection function.
