  • This study analyzes the problems in reading program of public libraries and provides some suggestions for the program development and management. For this analysis, I sampled and examined 350 news articles to reading programs done in the public libraries between 2013 and 2015. The result shows that 41.4% of the collected articles were the news about the reading programs in Seoul Metropolitan areas. While the articles about simple reading programs occupied 69.9%, the mixed activity programs reached a significant amount in total. In addition, 51.3% of program participants was under the elementary children and their parents, but only 9.0% program participants came from low socioeconomic status classes. 86 reading programs (28.4%) were designed for one-day events without a long-term policy. Based on such analyses, this study provides three suggestions: utilizing public relation teams and communicating mass media to advertize reading programs to local residents, developing systematic reading programs in users' needs, managing the reading programs for all kinds of local residents.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a diagnostic tool to strengthen the reading competencies of children and adolescents with disabilities, analyze its validity and reliability, and present basic data for the development of a diagnostic program. For this study, it was conducted on literature and case studies, the Delphi Method, and a preliminary survey of actual disabled children/adolescents. As a result of the study, there were limitations in validity and reliability analysis due to the small number of samples, but basic data was secured along with the development of a prototype diagnostic tool for the reading ability of children and adolescents with disabilities. It was proposed to develop the future reading competency diagnostic program by expanding it to the web and mobile platforms, considering various variables such as the characteristics of each disability type, a plan for data collection and utilization through big data, diagnostic procedures, and precautions during the diagnosis.

  • In the comprehension of English texts, Korean students generally try to translate English into Korean in accordance with the word order of Korean language. As a result, the comprehension of English texts is made in a regressive way, which results in slower reading. In order to enhance the reading speed, it is necessary for students to practice progressive reading. Also, while reading English texts, most readers' eyes tend to look at one word at a time, which actually cuts down on the reading speed. Reading by the sense group of as many words as possible at a glance, however, can help a reader more efficiently in less time. This research aims at developing the Powerpoint program for progressive reading by the sense group according to the student's level. In this program, as for methodology, the technique of rooking it fade-away is introduced to force a reader's eyes to move fast. Through this technique, it is possible to make a line of the texts disappear on the screen and make another line appear, which enables a reader to sweep the words across each and every line of the reading material smoothly without regression.

  • Bookmagic is a new reading program that encourages children of 5-15 ages to enjoy reading. Bookmagic provides free downloadable resources such as pre-reading and after-reading activities, booklists, posters and awards. Since a number of reading programs have already been developed, published and used, Bookmagic is not a toally new project. However, it is distinguished by the process of creating the program. While most of the reading programs available in Korea were developed by individual occupations(academic experts, private enterprises, civic organisations, associations of librarians or teachers), Bookmagic was designed by a team of various professionals including a picture book author, an academic researcher, a primary school teacher, a school librarian and two public librarians. Working in a partnership with other professionals, participant librarians had a unique opportunity to develop expertises on reading education as a creator of a program rather than as a deliverer.

To this end, a survey was conducte d on university libraries. As a result of the survey, 78% of university libraries were conducting leisure reading, and 72% of them provided separate space. Separate manpower was provided only in 30% of libraries, and book lists were provided mainly by best sellers. Regarding the need for leisure reading (4.28) and the role of university libraries (4.32), librarians responded that it was a necessary service for university libraries, and university library librarians that currently provide spaces and program s were more aware of the need.

  • This study attempts to seek a solution, in terms of brain science, to stimulate reading activities of men to whom no attention has been given from the field of reading. In order to do so, brain pattern, reading tendency, reading preference, reading effectiveness and influence of reading were analyzed. As a result of the analysis, first, it showed that respondents' characteristics did not affect brain patterns, but school and social influences on reading were found to affect brain patterns. Second, reading propensity according to gender was observed to be different in terms of personal health, personal self - esteem, and cultural artistry. On the other hand, reading effectiveness was found to be different in terms of reading engagement and the willingness to continue reading whereas reading propensity according to the brain pattern was different in books related to humor and family matters. Third, reading satisfaction, reading engagement and willingness to continue reading all were observed to affect the reading activities of men. Suggesting measures to stimulate reading activities of men based on such findings, first, implementing dynamic reading education programs and finding reading models for men are needed. Second, when selecting books for reading program operations, books should be recommended according to gender rather than being selected en bloc by libraries. Third, since reading education at home shows high influences on both male and male-type brain pattern, the starting point of reading education should be made at homes. In particular, fathers, who can become a role model for men, need a reading role model, and reading education programs for fathers are also required.
