  • Many quality engineering practitioners continue to have a considerable interest in implementing the concept of response surface methodology to real situations. Recently, dual response surface approach is extensively studied and recognized as a powerful tool for robust design. However, existing methods do not consider the information provided by customers and design engineers. In this regard, this article proposes a flexible optimization model that incorporates that information via desirability function modeling. The optimization scheme and its modeling flexibility are demonstrated through an illustrative example by comparing the proposed model with existing ones.

  • Robust design is an approach to reducing performance variation of quality characteristic values in quality engineering. Product array approach which is used in the Taguchi parameter design has a number of advantages by considering the noise factor. Taguchi has an idea that mean and variation are handled simultaneously to reduce the expected loss in products and processes. Taguchi has used the signal-to-noise ratio (SN) to achieve the appropriate set of operating conditions where variability around target is low in the Taguchi parameter design. Many Statisticians criticize the Taguchi techniques of analysis, particularly those based on the SN. In this paper we propose a substantially simpler optimization procedure for robust design using desirability function without resorting to SN.

  • The hypothetical nature of stated preferences can lead to a hypothetical bias that might work as a normative pressure, influencing survey responses. This paper aims to test the impact of social desirability bias by comparing economic estimates based on both subjective and objective valuation questions. The case study is about an urban riverine restoration project in Deajeon, South Korea. As valuation methods both contingent valuation and choice experiments were comparatively applied. Based on a nationally representative sample of 1,000 respondents, the test results offered contrasting conclusions between two test approaches. Accroding to the estimation results based on the conventional valuation, the marginal willingness to pay estimates are 10,500 KRW from CV; and 18,600 KRW for improving water quality, 2,200 KRW for the inside view, 8,900 KRW for the outside view, and 5,800 KRW for biodiversity from CE. A segmentation-based approach is a conventionally used method, which showed a limited impact of social desirability on willingness to pay estimates. The alternative parameterization-based approach measures a model-wide impact of social desirability, proving a significant bias. Although the study positioned a cheap-talk statement before the valuation section of the survey questionnaires, which might have pre-screened the bias, the overall implications of the results suggest a caution in reducing and observing hypothetical bias. There might remain a significant and substantial hypothetical bias even after cheap-talk, particularly in situations with strong social desirability, so that the potential role of objective valuation questions is guaranteed.

  • Taguchi parameter design, the product-array approach using orthogonal arrays is mainly used. However, it often requires an excessive number of experiments. An alternative approach, which is called the combined-array approach, was suggested by Welch et. al. and studied by others. In these studies, only single quality characteristic was considered. We propose how to simultaneously optimize multiple quality characteristics using desirability function when we used the combined-array approach to assign control and noise factors. An example is illustrated to the combined-array approach.

  • The desirability function approach by Derringer and Suich (1980) and the generalized distance approach by Khuri and Conlon (1981) are two major approaches to multiresponse optimization for improvement of quality of a product or process. So far, the desirability function method has been the only tool for multiresponse optimization in the situations where there are the goal regions for the respective responses. For such situations, we propose a multiresponse optimization method based on the generalized distance approach.

  • This paper considers robust design strategies for off-line quality control, with the use of experimental design and response surface methodology, in situations where all products have multiple quality characteristics. These strategies can be developed using the desirability concept of desirability functions to determine the settings of the design factors, not only to get the average performances on target but also to minimize variability around the target values.

  • There is more than a single quality characteristic and they are often of varying or mixed target types. The purpose of this paper is to develop general strategies for solving the multiple response robust design problem. The desirability function provides an important tool to solve problems that have different types of target since the desirability values all the range between zero and one. Several combinations of arithmetic averages, geometric averages, and standard deviations are used in the various strategies to find the best design point.

  • This research was conducted to enhance the value of low quality sweet persimmon by processing paste by combining low quality sweet persimmon and red-bean. In order to make sweet persimmon paste containing red-bean, the following procedures were executed : 1) the sweet persimmon was cleaned by water 2) the fruit stalk was removed 3) it was peeled, sliced, pitted and crushed 4) steamed and peeled red-bean paste was mixed 5) sweetening materials(starch syrup, sugar and dextrin) and salt were mixed 6) boiled and stored in refrigerator. Sweet persimmon was peeled, stem and seed was removed to make the paste. When mixing sweet persimmon paste and red-bean paste in the ratio of 6 : 4, sensory point of taste and overall desirability were higher than mixing in 5 : 5 and 4 : 6 but texture was lower. The sweet persimmon paste containing red-bean was softened and the sugar content was increased from 41.4$^{\circ}$Brix to 53.1$^{\circ}$Brix when 10% dextrin was added. The overall sensory evaluation was higher in sweet persimmon paste containing red-bean than commercial red-bean paste when 10% dextrin was added. The overall desirability also shown a significant difference between them. Even though findings were statistically insignificant, sweet persimmon powder with red-bean paste increased in texture and overall desirability compared with commercial red-beans paste. Sweet persimmon powder paste containing red-bean significantly decreased in flavor, color, taste and overall desirability compared with sweet persimmon paste containing red-bean. As a result of this study, the best combination for the quantity of sub-materials to make sweet persimmon paste was 600g of sweet persimmon, 400g of red-bean, starch syrup 120g, sugar 60g, salt 4g and dextrin 100g.

  • The importance of offset program has been increased, recently. Most research focused on the technology valuation and improvement of offset program. Research related with assessment of offset companies and development of differentiated strategies for cultivating them although they are important actor in offset program. Hence, this paper aims to propose the framework for assessing offset companies and providing the differentiated strategies using Desirability Function and IPA. Additionally, by applying the proposed framework to real offset companies, the applicability and usefulness of it are verified. The framework consists of extracting performance measures, assessment of it using Desirability Function and AHP and strategic planning based on IPA.

  • Purpose : This investigation was carried out to understand how various gender role identity in adolescence affect sexual intercourse. In addition, it was done to support and encourage gender role identity which can protect themselves from physical, psychological, social sexuality. Method : From 2003 7.1 to 7.19, questionnaire made by Lee BS(2002) was distributed to 1172 girl high school students in Seoul. Its reliability was as high as 0.80 and it was analysed by SPSS. Result : In the 3 kinds of gender role identity, girls who had sexual relations showed higher feminity and masculinity and did not show any difference in social desirability. in the 4 kinds of gender role identity, girls with sexual experience showed higher frequency in oder of androgyny and undifferentiated. In 8kinds, bisexuality was higher and girls with experience showed undifferentiated of low social desirability. There were no difference between the gender role identity and the age of the first sexual experience. The factors that affected gender role identity were school, grade, economic standard and whether they have a girlfriend or boyfriend. Conclusion : Programs that focus on problem solving of sexual education for androgyny of sexually high experienced and undifferentiated of low social desirability, should be provided.
