  • With the development of cardiac surgical technique, we need more prosthetic materials for repairing the intra- and extracardiac defects. Although bovine pericardial bioprosthesis treated with glutaraldehyde (GA) solution is one of the most popular materials, it has a drawback of later calcific degeneration. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of several materials and methods in reducing the calcific degeneration of bovine pericardium. Material and Method: Forty square-shaped pieces of bovine pericardia were fixed in 0.625% GA solution with 4 g/L MgCl$_2$ㆍ6$H_2O$ as a control group (group 1). Other 40 pieces pre-treated with 1 % SDS(group 2) and 40 pieces post-treated with 8% glutamate (group 3) and 2% chitosan (group 4) were also fixed in the same GA solution. Other 40 pieces pre-treated with 1% SDS and post-treated with 8% glutamate and 40 pieces post-treated with 2% chitosan were also fixed in the same GA solution (group 5, 6). The pericardial pieces were implanted into the belly of 40 Fisher 344 rats subdermally and were extracted 1 month, 2 months, 3 months, and 6 months after the implantation. With an atomic absorption spectrophotometry, we measured the calcium amount deposited and examined the tissue with microscope. Result: The calcium deposition in 1 month was less in group 2, 5, 6 than that in group 1 (p<0.05). It was most prominent in group 5 (p<0.01). This finding continued in 2 month. In 3 month, the calcium deposition was less in group 3 and 4 as well as group 2, 5, and 6 than in group 1. In 6 month, the calcium deposition in group 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 was less than that in group 1 and the difference was more than that of 1, 2, and 6 month. The microscopic calcium deposition was also less in group 2 and 5. Calcium deposition developed in the whole layer of pericardium, beginning with the surrounding the collagen fiber and progressing inwardly. Conclusion: Pre-treatment with SDS, post-treatment with glutamate or chitosan, and SDS pre-treatment and post-treatment with glutamate or chitosan were effective in reducing the calcium deposition in bovine pericardium. Moreover, the combined method of SDS pre-treatment and glutamate post-treatment was more effective than other methods.

  • CO2 capture and storage (CCS) is one of the promising technologies that can mitigate ever-growing emission of anthropogenic carbon dioxide and resultant climate change. Among them, chemical looping combustion (CLC) and calcium looping (CaL) are getting increasing attention recently as the prospective alternatives to the existing amine scrubbing. Both methods use metal oxides in the process and consist of cyclic reactions. Yet, due to their cyclic nature, they both need to resolve sintering-induced cyclic stability deterioration. Moreover, the structure of the metal oxides needs to be optimized to enhance the overall performance of CO2 capture and storage. Deposition of thin film coating on the metal oxide is another way to get rid of wear and tear during the sintering process. Chemical vapor deposition or atomic layer deposition are the well-known, established methods to form thin film membranes, which will be discussed in this review. Various effective recent developments on structural modification of metal oxide and incorporation of stabilizers for cyclic stability are also discussed.

  • Epitaxial graphene on metal substrates provides excellent platforms to study its atomic and electronic structures, and can be grown either by surface segregation of carbon or by chemical vapor deposition. The growth behaviors of the two methods, however, have not been directly compared each other. Here, we studied domain structures of graphene grown by three different methods, surface segregation, post-annealing with adsorbed ethylene, and high-temperature dose of ethylene, using scanning tunneling microscopy. The first two methods resulted in graphene regions with areas of $100nm^2$, whereas the third method showed large area graphene (> $10^4nm^2$) with regular hexagonal Moire patterns, implying that high-temperature dose of ethylene is preferable for further studies on graphene such as additional growth of organic molecules.

  • Various linear system solvers with multi-physics analysis schemes are compared focusing on the near-field region considering thermal-hydraulic-chemical (THC) coupled multi-physics phenomena. APro, developed at KAERI for total system performance assessment (TSPA), performs a finite element analysis with COMSOL, for which the various combinations of linear system solvers and multi-physics analysis schemes should to be compared. The KBS-3 type disposal system proposed by Sweden is set as the target system and the near-field region, which accounts for most of the computational burden is considered. For comparison of numerical analysis methods, the computing time and memory requirement are the main concerns and thus the simulation time is set up to one year. With a single deposition hole problem, PARDISO and GMRES-SSOR are selected as representative direct and iterative solvers respectively. The performance of representative linear system solvers is then examined through a problem with an increasing number of deposition holes and the GMRES-SSOR solver with a segregated scheme shows the best performance with respect to the computing time and memory requirement. The results of the comparative analysis are expected to provide a good guideline to choose better numerical analysis methods for TSPA.

• Anti-Reflective (AR) thin film coatings of $SiO_2$ (n= 1.48) and $TiO_2$ (n=2.17) were deposited by ion-beam assisted deposition (IBAD) with End-Hall ion source and conventional electron beam (e-beam) evaporation to investigate the effect of deposition method on the refractive indicies (n) of the fIlms. Green-light generation using a GaAs laser diode was achieved via excitation of the second harmonic. The latter resulted from the transmission of the fundamental guided-mode wave of 1064 nm through periodically poled $LiNbO_3$. Large differences in the refractive indicies of each of the layers in the multilayer coating may improve AR performance. IBAD of $SiO_2$ reduced its refractive index from 1.45 to 1.34 at 1064 nm. Conversely, e-beam evaporation of $TiO_2$ increased its refractive index from 1.80 to 2.11. In addition, no fluctuations in absorption at the wavelength of 1064 nm were found. The results suggest that films prepared by different deposition methods can increase the effectiveness of multilayer AR coatings.

  • The deposition of sewer solids during dry weather in combined sewer systems results in a loss of flow capacity that may restrict flow and cause a local flooding and enhanced solids deposition. In order to solve these problems and to manage sewer systems efficiently, development of estimation equations for solid sediments In sewer systems is needed. However, estimation of solid sediments has performed using specific methods such as computer model before the development of estimation equations. In this study, solid sediments in sewer systems were estimated using MOUSE model for Gunja drainage basin in Korea and the estimated results were verified using estimation equations developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. As results, the estimated values using MOUSE model are smaller than that of equations developed in 1977 but greater than that of equations developed in 1984. Although the comparison between simulated and measured solid deposition is difficult due to the absent of measurement data, the estimated values using MOUSE model is reliable and can be used to develop estimation equations for solid sediment in Gunja drainage basin.
