Dental Hygienists' Work Cognition and Demand for Related Legislation (치과위생사 업무인지와 법률화 필요 요구도 조사 연구)

  • Objectives: This study aimed to identify the importance of the directivity of reflecting on a realistic task when aiming to reorganize a relevant law for dental hygienists through examining dental hygiene students' perceived need for a relevant law on dental hygiene related work. Methods: A survey was conducted targeting dental hygiene students from March 28 to April 30, 2018. The following findings were obtained. The results were summarized as follows. The collected data were analyzed using the SPSS WIN 21.0 statistical program. Results: With reference to the influence of the need for a work-related legislation on dental hygienists' awareness of their legal rights, findings revealed that the latter was higher when there was higher involvement in precision impression procedures, higher involvement in occlusal adjustment in the middle stage, and higher perceived need for legislation on a comprehensive dental hygiene course (all p<0.05). Conclusions: Based on these findings, it is considered necessary to pursue a national solution for modifying the relevant legal system to provide institutional support for dental hygienists' work. Additionally, the worry in the whole dentistry in order to establish dental hygienists' task.

Contents analysis of the community dental hygiene practice outcome evaluation (지역사회치위생학 현장(보건소)실습 성과평가 내용분석)

  • Objectives: The purpose of the study is to evaluate the contents analysis of the community dental hygiene practice in the dental hygiene students and suggest the outcome based evaluation index of community dental hygiene practice. This study will provide the basic data for the community nursing and social welfare practice. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 82 dental hygiene professors and 254 dental hygienists in community health centers after receiving informed consent based on institutional review board from 5th Dec 2014 to 30th Jul 2015. A total of 49 professors and 134 dental hygienists gave the complete answers. The study instrument was adapted from the literature review. The questionnaire consisted of evaluation, purpose of evaluation, and evaluation format. Data were analyzed using SPSS 20.0 program. The contents analysis was carried out through input, process, output, and outcome. Results: The practice outcome evaluation was conducted in 62.9% of the dental hygiene departments and 32.9% of the community health centers. Most of the dental hygiene professors chose "To know what students learned(27.3%)" and "To ensure student's role and behavior in practice(27.3%)." as the purpose of evaluation. The public dental hygienists chose "To score the practice grade(42.1%)." The evaluation method was done anonymously. Conclusions: The outcome based evaluation in community dental hygiene practice was the best method to evaluate the practice education for the competency of the dental hygiene students.

Dental hygiene freshmen satisfaction with their major and its influence perception of occupational consciousness (치위생(학)과 신입생의 전공만족이 직업의식에 미치는 영향)

  • Objectives : The study was to examine satisfaction with their major study influences their perception of occupational consciousness among dental hygiene freshmen. Methods : The total of dental hygiene freshmen were conveniently recruited from four schools located in Gyeongsangnam-do, Ulsan and Busan city. A questionnaire was used to collect information about general characteristics and the perception of occupational consciousness and major study satisfaction. The statistical analysis was done by using the SPSS 18.0 program. Results : Dental hygiene freshmen who showed a positive their major satisfactory showed higher perception of occupational. The social recognition and position of job-consciousness was lowest at the score 2.55, harmony with a colleague is close to efficiency in duty of job-consciousness was highest at the score 3.54. Conclusions : We need a modifying and complement of the career guidance programs for dental hygiene freshmen.

Knowledge about hepatitis B among dental hygiene students in one college (일부 M지역 치위생과 학생들의 B형간염에 대한 지식도 조사)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate knowledge and differences about hepatitis B among dental hygiene students in Masan university. The study surveyed by means of self-administered questionnaire consisted 193 of them. The converted score of knowledge of hepatitis B among 1st and 2nd grade students was 61.3(${\pm}22.4$) and 73.1(${\pm}18.3$) point respectively if 100 point for all statements were correctly answered. They have a good understanding of knowledge of hepatitis B except air bone infection and transmission by fomites. There is no differences of knowledge about hepatitis B according to socio-economic factor like father's education, mother's education and income. In conclusion, dental hygiene students should be educated more about hepatitis B.

The effects of CPR education on CPR knowledge and self-efficacy for dental hygiene students from different regions

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate the knowledge and self-efficacy of dental hygiene students after cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) education. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by 260 dental hygiene students in the period between 5 November 2015 and 30 December 2015. The data analysis was performed by SPSS win 22.0 program for frequency analysis, chi-square analysis, and dichotomies multiple response analysis. Results: Self-efficacy and knowledge increased after CPR education. Most of the dental hygiene students are statistically significant difference in self-efficacy depending on CPR knowledge. Conclusions: Based on the results of this study, we suggest that the theory and practice of CPR, if taught to dental hygiene students, will boost their self-efficacy, and enable them to perform it correctly when faced with and emergency situation.

  • Objectives : The purpose of the study is to investigate the clinical practice stress reduction and to improve clinical practice satisfaction in dental hygiene students. Methods : The subjects were 354 dental hygiene students in Gwangju and Jeonnam. A self-reported questionnaire was filled out from June 3 to 21, 2013. The questionnaire included stress management in the clinical practice. Results : As for clinical practice stress, there was a significant relevance between satisfaction in major and clinical practice. Clinical practice stress coping had a significant relevance to clinical practice satisfaction and clinical practice stress. Conclusions : In order to reduce clinical practice stress in dental hygiene students and to enhance clinical practice satisfaction, it is important to develop clinical practice stress management program and to develop the appropriate measurement tool for stress.

Comparison of knowledge in hepatitis B in nursing and dental hygiene students in Busan (부산지역 간호과와 치위생과 학생의 B형간염에 대한 지식 연구)

  • Objectives : The purpose of the study is to investigate and compare the knowledge of hepatitis B in nursing and dental hygiene students in Busan. Methods : A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by 361 students in nursing and dental hygiene departments in Busan from August 25 to September 4, 2013. Data were analyzed by SPSS version 13.0 for descriptive statistical analysis, ${\chi}^2$-test, and t-test and set at p<0.05. Results : Knowledge in hepatitis B consisted of 25 questions including severity of hepatitis B, general knowledge, infection routes, and symptoms and treatment. There was no significant difference between nursing and dental hygiene students in knowledge; nursing students showed an average of $18.21{\pm}2.809$ and dental hygiene showed $17.71{\pm}3.23$. The average score was $17.96{\pm}3.03$ out of 25 questions. Conclusions : There is no significant difference between nursing and dental hygiene students in knowledge of hepatitis B. It is necessary to emphasize the education of hepatitis B periodically in addition to regular curricula.

Determining priorities for evaluation accreditation to assess dental hygiene education programs (치위생교육인증평가를 위한 평가인증 우선순위 결정)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to review the systems used to evaluate dental hygiene education and to establish priorities for the evaluation index for accreditation to enhance competitiveness and facilitate quality control of dental hygiene education. Methods: A survey of priorities for accreditation evaluation was developed based on input from professors at 43 universities. Data were analyzed using the Analytic Hierarchy Process method with Expert Choice 2000 software. Results: The relative importance of each evaluation area, ranked in descending order, was as follows: vision and operating system; administration and finances; facilities and equipment; educational outcomes; professors; educational process; and students. The importance of the evaluation part was highest in field training at the education process part and scholarship at the student part. The importance after applying complex weights was highest in establishing a development plan for the vision and operating system. Conclusions: Practical accreditation evaluation based on objectivity and validity is needed to control the quality of dental hygiene education. Therefore, priorities in accreditation evaluation standard must be determined to establish a basis for quality improvement in education at dental hygiene departments.

Major Satisfaction and Professionalism according to DISC Behavior Patterns of Dental Hygiene Students

  • Objective: This study was performed to verify how DISC behavior patterns affect the major satisfaction and professionalism of dental hygiene students and provide basic data for dental hygiene students to have increased major satisfaction and maximize their strength by understanding their DISC behavior pattern. As a result, the following conclusion was obtained. Methods: The data was collected From November 1, 2018 to November 14, 2018, 218 dental hygiene students. Data was collected using self-reported questionnaires. Statistical analysis was performed with IBM SPSS ver. 21.0. Mean (standard deviation) and one-way ANOVA & pearson correlation were performed. Results: The most frequent DISC behavior patterns of dental hygiene students was steadiness types (49.0%) followed by influence types (34.5%), conscientiousness types (9.0%), and dominance types (7.5%). There were no significant difference in professionalism and major satisfaction according to DISC behavior patterns in dental hygiene students. There was a correlation between major satisfaction and professionalism of dental hygiene students. Conclusion: In conclusion, in order for dental hygiene students to establish positive professionalism through increased major satisfaction, it is necessary to make various efforts such as providing consultation and education that corresponds to each student's DISC behavior patterns. These efforts will provide the students career vision and encourage them to improve their academic achievement and find employment that fits their vocational aptitude.

Relation between clinical learning environment and clinical performance competency in dental hygiene students (치위생대학생의 현장실습교육환경과 임상수행능력 간의 관계)

  • Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the relation between factors related to the clinical performance competency of dental hygiene students and their clinical learning environment. Methods: The study conducted a survey of dental hygiene students from October 18 to 30, 2023. The data were analyzed using one way analysis of variance, t-test, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: The total practicum lasted ≤10 weeks, 11-15 weeks, and ≥16 weeks for 41.7%, 33.5%, and 24.8% of the students, respectively. Half of them had experience at only one clinical institution. Clinical learning environment had an average score of 3.46 points, whereas the average clinical performance competency of the participants was 3.60 points. The major influencing factors on clinical performance competency were identified as preceptor' s guidance (β=0.277), work participation opportunities (β=0.213), and perceived importance of clinical practice (β=0.136). Conclusions: Efforts are required to provide students with prior education on the importance of clinical practice, improve the clinical learning environment with a focus on preceptor's guidance and work participation opportunities. And standardize various elements to resolve differences in the practice of clinical institutions across regions.
