  • Mullite-matrix and $Al_2O_3$-matrix composites were fabricated with 30 wt% hydroxyapatite (HA) and tricalcium phosphate (TCP), respectively, as additives to give bioactivity. A diphasic gel process was employed to lower the densification temperature of the mullite matrix to $1320^{\circ}C$. A polymer complexation process was used to synthesize a TCP powder that was fully densified at $1250^{\circ}C$, for application to the matrix. For the HA/mullite composite, HA decomposed during sintering by reactions with the matrix components of $Al_2O_3$ and $SiO_2$, resulting in a mixture of $Al_2O_3$, TCP, and other minor phases with a low densification of less than 88% of the theoretical density (TD). In contrast, the TCP/$Al_2O_3$ composite was highly densified by sintering at $1350^{\circ}C$ to 96%TD with no reaction between the components. Different from the TCP monolith, the TCP/$Al_2O_3$ composite also showed a fine microstructure and intergranular fracture, both of which characteristics are advantageous for strength and fracture toughness.

  • G $d_{0.2}$C $e_{0.8}$ $O_{1.9}$(CGO) for electrolyte and L $a_{0.5}$S $r_{0.5}$Mn $O_3$(LSM50) for cathode in Solid Oxide Fuel Cells(SOFC) were synthesized by citrate process. Specimens were prepared with sintering temperatures at 110$0^{\circ}C$, 120$0^{\circ}C$ and 130$0^{\circ}C$, which were fabricated by slurry coating with citric acid contents. Interfacial resistance was measured between cathode and electrolyte using AC-impedance analyzer. With various citric acid content, the degree of agglomeration for the initial particles changed. Also sintering temperature changed the particle size and the degree of densification of cathode. Factors affecting the interfacial resistance were adherent degree of the electrolyte and cathode, distribution of TPB(three phase boundaries, TPB i.e., electrolyte/electrode/gas phase area) and porosity of cathode. By increasing the sintering temperature, particle size and densification of the cathode were increased. And then, TPB area which occurs catalytic reaction was reduced and so interfacial resistance was increased.sed.sed.d.

  • To improve the performance of a launch vehicle, kerosene, a launch vehicle fuel, undergoes a densification process. Liquid nitrogen injection cooling is an effective densification method which has a simple system and is inexpensive. During the cooling process, however, nitrogen may dissolve in the kerosene, possibly resulting in changes to fuel properties. Therefore, it is essential to measure and eliminate the amount of dissolved nitrogen in the kerosene. In this study, the vacuum extraction principle is introduced to measure the content of dissolved nitrogen in the kerosene. In addition, the experimental results, which used a designed/manufactured nitrogen sampling device, are described. From the results, the validity of the nitrogen sampling device and the dissolved nitrogen measurement/elimination methods was demonstrated.

  • Tungsten is a high melting point metal unlike other steel materials, and it is difficult to manufacture because of its high melting temperature. In this study, pressure sintering process method was applied to manufacture the tungsten materials at low temperature. Therefore, it is necessary to densify the sintered material by using a sintering additive. Studies have been conducted on how the amount of titanium for sintering tungsten affects the mechanical properties of tungsten in this study. In order to secure the densification mechanism of tungsten powder during the sintering process, the characteristics of the sintered tungsten material according to the change of titanium content were evaluated. It was investigated the relationship between sintering parameters and mechanical properties for densification of microstructures. The sintered tungsten materials according to sintering additive content showed high sintered density (about 16.31g/cm3) and flexural strength (about 584 MPa) when the content of sintering additive was 3 wt%. However, as the content of the sintering additive increases, mechanical property of flexural strength is decreased, and the porosity is increased due to the heterogeneous sintering around titanium.

  • Thick oxide layer was fabricated by anodic reaction and complex oxidation performed by combining low temperature thermal oxidation (50$0^{\circ}C$, 1 hr at $H_2O$/O$_2$) and a RTO (rapid thermal oxidation) process (105$0^{\circ}C$, 1 min). Electrical characteristics of OPSL (oxidized porous silicon layer) were almost the same as those of thermal silicon dioxide prepared at high temperature. The leakage current through the OPSL of 20${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ thickness was about 100 - 500 ㎀ in the range 0 V to 50 V. The average value of breakdown field was about 3.9 MV/cm. From the XPS analysis, surface and internal oxide films of OPSL prepared by complex process were confirmed completely oxidized and also the role of RTO process was important for the densification of PSL (porous silicon layer) oxidized at low temperature.

  • In the present study, a high-strength polyethylene terephthalate (PET) sheet was fabricated through a densification process of low melting PET fiber (LMF) combined PET sheet. During the thermal heat treatment process of the combined LMF, individual PET fiber was connected, which in turn leads to the improvement of the interfacial bonding force between the fibers. Also, the densification of the PET sheet leads to reduce macrospore density and in return could enhance the binding force between the overlapped PET networks. Consequently, the asprepared LMF-PET sheet showed about 410% improved tensile strength and the same elongation compared to before compression. Besides, the enhanced bonding force can prevent the shrinkage of the PET fiber network and exhibited excellent dimensional stability.

  • Molybdenum (Mo) is one of the representative refractory metals for its high melting point, superior thermal conductivity, low density and low thermal expansion coefficient. However, due to its high melting point, it is necessary for Mo products to be fabricated at a high sintering temperature of over $1800-2000^{\circ}C$. Because this process is expensive and inefficient, studies to improve sintering property of Mo have been researched actively. In this study, we fabricated Mo nanopowders to lower the sintering temperature of Mo and tried to consolidate the Mo nanopowders through ultra high pressure compaction. We first fabricated Mo nanopowders by a mechano-chemical process to increase the specific surface area of the Mo powders. This process includes a high-energy ball milling step and a reduction step in a hydrogen atmosphere. We compacted the Mo nanopowders with ultra high pressure by magnetic pulsed compaction (MPC) before pressureless sintering. Through this process, we were able to improve the green density of the Mo compacts by more than 20 % and fabricate a high density Mo sintered body with more than a 95 % sintered density at relatively low temperature.

  • 3Y-TZP ceramics obtained by doping 3 mol.% of Y2O3 to ZrO2 to stabilize the phase transition are widely used in the engineering ceramic industry due to their excellent mechanical properties such as high strength, fracture toughness, and wear resistance. An additional increase in mechanical properties is possible by manufacturing a composite in which a high-hardness material such as oxide or carbide is added to the 3Y-TZP matrix. In this study, composite powder was prepared by dispersing a designated percentage of WC in the 3Y-TZP matrix, and the results were compared after manufacturing the composite using the different processes of spark plasma sintering and HP. The difference between the densification behavior and porosity with the process mechanism was investigated. The correlation between the process conditions and phase formation was examined based on the crystalline phase formation behavior. Changes to the microstructure according to the process conditions were compared using field-emission scanning electron microscopy. The toughness-strengthening mechanism of the composite with densification and phase formation was also investigated.

  • Permanent magnets of Nd-Fe-B group have kept a key post in the permanent magnet market and used in various parts. Tube Process is a process to produce permanent magnets using a deformable tube for denslfication of powder magnets. Advantage claimed for this process is that it can accomplish both densification and anisotropication in one step forming. In this paper. the simulation has been carried out for a full Tube Process in a closed Qe considering the compressibility of material, arbitrary curved shape and deformable body contact between Nd-Fe-B powder magnet and copper tube. The results show that the analysis of Tube Process is applicable with great help in the stage of preform design.

  • The effect of sintering atmosphere on the final properties and phase change of Ti (C, N) Cr3c2 ceramics was investigated. In the case of sintering in vacuum and N2 atmosphere, densely packed sintered body was obtained. In Ar atmosphere, however, densification was much decreased compared to sintering in vacuum and Na. XRD analysis showed that in vacuum atmosphere Cr3c2 phase was changed to Cr7c3 Phase whereas in N2 and Ar atmosphere phase change was not occurred. That is, for vacuum sintering, the formation of defects in Ti(C, N) structure occurred through de-nitridation process, and it promotes the diffusion of C in Cr3c2 and raises the densification effects. But in the case of N2 atmosphere, densification phenomenon was considered to be due to sintering mechanism that enabled formation of free carbon and removal of oxygen by free carbon and existence of carbon in the grain boundary.
