This paper investigates schemes to improve TCP performance in multipath forwarding networks. In multipath routing, packets to the same destination are sent to multiple next-hops in either packet-level or flow-level forwarding mode. Effective bandwidth is increased since we can utilize unused capacity of multiple paths to the destination. In packet-level multipath forwarding networks, TCP performance may not be enhanced due to frequent out-of-order segment arrivals at the receiver because of different delays among paths. To overcome this problem, we propose simple TCP modifications. At the sender, the fast retransmission threshold is adjusted taking the number of paths into consideration. At the receiver, the delayed acknowledgment scheme is modified such that an acknowledgment for an out-of-order segment arrival is delayed in the same way for the in-order one. The number of unnecessary retransmissions and congestion window reductions is diminished, which is verified by extensive simulations. In flow-level multipath forwarding networks, hashing is used at routers to select outgoing link of a packet. Here, we show by simulations that TCP performance is increased in proportion to the number of paths regardless of delay differences.
We theoretically analyze and experimentally demonstrate a polarization-diversified four-channel optical demultiplexer (DeMUX) comprising a hybrid mode conversion-type polarization splitter rotator (PSR) and delayed Mach-Zehnder interferometer optical DeMUX for use in coarse wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM)-based optical interconnect applications. The Si wire-based device fabricated by a complementary metal-oxide semiconductor-compatible process exhibited nearly the same filter spectral response irrespective of the input polarization state under the PSR. The device had an extremely low insertion loss of <1.0 dB, polarization-dependent loss of <1.0 dB, and interchannel imbalance of <0.5 dB, suppressing unwanted wavelength and polarization crosstalk from neighboring channels of <-20 dB at each peak transmission channel grid.
In this paper, we designed a Delayed Dual Core Lock-Step (D-DCLS) processor where two cores operate same instructions with delay and the result is compared to mitigate soft errors and common mode failures in automotive electronic systems. Because D-DCLS does not know which core an error occurred in, each core must be recovered to the point before the error occurred, but complex hardware modifications are required to return all intermediate values on the pipeline stage. In this paper, in order for easy hardware implementation, all register values are saved to a buffer whenever a branch instruction is executed. When an error is detected, the saved register values are automatically restored, and then 'BX LR' instruction is executed to return to the last branch point. The proposed D-DCLS processor was designed using Verilog HDL and was confirmed to continue normal operation after automatically recovering error.
A singular pertubation theory is applied to obtain an approximate solution for suboptimal control of nuclear reactors with spatially distributed parameters. The inverse of the neutron velocity is regarded as a small perturbing parameter, and the model, adopted for simplicity, is a cylindrically symmetrical reactor whose dynamics are described by the one group diffusion equation with one delayed neutron group. The Helmholtz mode expansion is used for the application of the optimal theory for lumped parameter systems to the spatially distributed parameter systems. An asymptotic expansion of the feedback gain matrix is obtained with construction of the boundary layer correction up to the first order.
The switching mechanism of multi-domain vertical alignment mode LCD and delayed on response time phenomenon in special conditions are investigated. A modified DCC (Dynamic Capacitance Compensation), DCCII has been developed for the fast response time performance in PVA TFT-LCD TVs. DCCII applies a pre-tilt voltage to addressed pixels during the previous frame in addition to an overshoot voltage. In result, the response time less than 8 msec, has been obtained for all moving images through the DCCII technique.

We propose a variable structure control design method for a class of multivariable uncertain state-delayed systems which can be represented by polytopic models. In terms of LMIs, we derive a sufficient condition for the existence of a linear sliding surface guaranteeing the asymptotic stability of the sliding mode dynamics. We parameterize the sliding surface by using the solution of the LMI existence condition. We also give a switching feedback control strategy guaranteeing stable sliding mode. By using a numerical example, we show that our method supplements the existing results and it can be better than the existing results.

In this paper, the theoretical development to stabilize a class of uncertain time-delay systems via sliding mode control is presented. The system under consideration is described in state space model containing state delay, uncertain parameters and disturbance. The main idea is to reduce the state of delayed system, by employing the generalize linear transformation, into an equivalent one with no delay inside, which is easier to analyze its behavior and stability. Then, the sliding control approach is employed to find the stabilizing control law. Finally, a numerical simulation is illustrated to show the algorithm for applying the proposed theorems and the efffetiveness of the designed control law in stabilizing the controlled systems.
Experimental investigation on flame spread of blended fuel droplet arrays has been conducted for droplet diameters of 1.0mm and 0.75mm using high-speed chemiluminescence images of OH radical. The flame spread rate is measured with blended fuel composition, droplet diameter, and droplet spacing. Flame spread is categorized into two: a continuous mode and an intermittent one. There exist a limit droplet spacing, above which flame does not spread, and a droplet spacing of maximum flame spread, which is closely related to flame diameter. It is seen that flame spread rate is mainly dependent upon the relative position of flame zone within a droplet spacing. In case of large droplet, the increase of % volume of Heptane induces the shift of limit droplet spacing to a larger spacing since volatile Heptane plays a role of an enhancer of flame spread rate. In case of small droplet, the increase of % volume of Heptane leads to the shift of limit droplet spacing to a smaller droplet spacing. This is so because of the delayed chemical reaction time by the rapid increase of mass flux of fuel vapor for small droplet.

IEEE 802.11 Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) became a prevailing technology for the broadband wireless Internet access, and new applications such as Voice over WLAM (VoWLAN) are fast emerging today. For the battery-powered VoWLAN devices, the standby time extension is a key concern for the market acceptance while today's 802.11 is not optimized for such an operation. In this paper, we propose a novel Idle Mode operation, which comprises paging, idle handoff, and delayed handoff. Under the idle mode operation, a Mobile Host (MH) does not need to perform a handoff within a predefined Paging Area (PA). Only when the MH enters a new PA, an idle handoff is performed with a minimum level of signaling. Due to the absence of such an idle mode operation, both IP paging and Power Saving Mode (PSM) have been considered the alternatives so far even though they are not efficient approaches. We implement our proposed scheme in order to prove the feasibility. The implemented prototype demonstrates that the proposed scheme outperforms the legacy alternatives with respect to energy consumption, thus extending the standby time.
The flow around a high-speed train with three underbody structures in the bogie area is numerically investigated using the improved delayed detached eddy simulation method. The vortex structure, pressure distribution, flow field structure, and unsteady velocity of the wake are analyzed by vortex identification criteria Q, frequency spectral analysis, empirical mode decomposition (EMD), and Hilbert spectral analysis. The results show that the structures of the bogie and its installation cabin reduce the momentum of fluid near the tail car, thus it is easy to induce flow separation and make the fluid no longer adhere to the side surface of the train, then forming vortices. Under the action of the vortices on the side of the tail car, the wake vortices have a trend of spanwise motion. But the deflector structure can prevent the separation on the side of the tail car. Besides, the bogie fairings do not affect the formation process and mechanism of the wake vortices, but the fairings prevent the low-speed fluid in the bogie installation cabin from flowing to the side of the train and reduce the number of the vortices in the wake region.
