  • The purpose of this study is to identify the influence of family support on hope of the patients with stroke. Subjects were 53 in-patients with stroke in two general hospitals and one oriental medicine hospital located in Seoul and Kwang-Ju. The instruments used for this study : The family support scale developed by Kang Hyun Suk(1985). The hope scale developed by Nowotny(1989). The Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA. Pearson's correlation and simple regression. Data had been collected from December 24, 1998 to January 31, 1999. The results of this study were as follows The mean score of family support was 43.94 and the mean score of the hope was 80.89. The relationship between family support and the hope of the patients with stroke revealed a significant correlation (r= .560, p= .0001). The variables influencing family support and the hope of the patients with stroke were as follows : There was significant difference between family support and general characteristic factor, which was family chief caregiver (p= .002). There was no significant difference between hope and general characteristic factors. but There were significant differences between one of the subscales of hope, 'confidence in the outcome' and general characteristic factors, which were age(p= .021), perceived disability effect(p= .027). There were significant differences between one of the subscales of hope 'possibility of future', and general characteristic factors, which were age(p= .016), education(p= .018). There was significant difference between one of the subscales of hope. 'spiritual belief', and general characteristic factors, which was religion(p= .002). There was significant difference between one of the subscales of hope, 'active involvement', and general characteristic factors, which was family chief caregiver (p= .012). It was found that the higher the degree of perceived family support, the higher the degree of hope. Clearly, the perceived family support can contribute significantly and positively to hope of the patients with stroke. Therefore, nurses should plan interventions to inspire hope level of patients with stroke by family support. The above results may be used as the basic data to seek more efficient way of elevating nursing practice and qualify for the patients with stroke.

  • This study was designed to identify the relationship between perceived pain, family support and quality of life in patients with ankylosing spondylitis. The purpose of this study was to contribute to the theoretical understanding of the relationship of these three variables and eventually to more effective adaptation of patients to their situation. The subjects for this study were the 68 patients who had been diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis and registered as out-patients in the Rheumatism Center of one university hospital in Seoul. The data were collected during the period from October 10, 1997 to December 20, 1997, Pain was measured using the perceived pain scale(VAS : Visual Analog Scale)developed by Calm(1993), family support using the scale developed by Kang Hyun Suk (1985) and Quality of Life using the scale developed by Ro Yoo Ja(1988). The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, Frequencies, Pearson correlation coefficient, using the SPSS program. The results of this can be summarized as followings. 1. The mean perceived pain score was 5. 13 with a range of 2 to 10. 2. The mean perceived family support score was 41.08$\pm$5.34 with a range of 20 to 50. 3. The mean perceived quality of life score was 134.07$\pm$19.82 with a range of 83 to 176. 4. Significant statistical difference was found between family support and quality of life (r=.331, p<0.001). A significant negative statistical difference was found between the family support and quality of life and pain(r=-.250, p<0.05, r=-.460, p<0.001). 5. General characteristics related to pain were exercise (t=4.72, p<0.0006). 6. General characteristics related to family support were age(F=2.65, p<0.0246), educational level (F=2.84, p<0.0282) and exercise (t=3.24, p<0.0452). 7. General characteristics related to quality of life were educational level (F=3.03, p<0.0392) and exercise (t=3.12, p<0.0465). It was found that the higher the level perceived pain, the lower the degree of perceived family support and the quality of life. It was also found that the higher the degree of perceived family support, the higher the degree of perceived quality of life. Accordingly, the conclusions from this study are that reduction of pain is achieved through the family support. Therefore, it is proposed that family support is an appropriate nursing intervention to improve the quality of life of patients with ankylosing spondylitis.

  • Purpose: This study aims to investigate the degree of burnout of 119 rescuers, to determine factors influencing their burnout, and to provide basic data for development of intervention programs to prevent the burnout. Methods: Subjects of this study were all 119 rescuers working at fire stations located in Busan and Gyeongnam. The data were collected from May 1, 2010 to June 30, 2010. The collected data were analyzed with SPSS/WIN 17.0. Results: When the difference in the degree of burnout by general characteristics was investigated, the means of burnout were significantly different depending on age, period of service, position, license, annual salary, desire to work continuously and types of working hours. Job stress, job satisfaction, social support, self efficacy and self esteem showed a statistically significant correlation with burnout. The degree of burnout became higher with more job stress and lower job satisfaction, social support, self efficacy and self esteem. As a significant factor affecting the degree of burnout of 119 rescuers, job stress showed 47.3% of explanatory power. The explanatory power of all of job stress, job satisfaction, self efficacy, types of working hours, annual salary and license was 62% and the power of job stress was the highest. Conclusion: From these results, job stress, job satisfaction and self-efficacy were found to be factors affecting the burnout of 119 rescuers. Therefore, intervention programs to reduce job stress and to improve job satisfaction, social support, self efficacy and self esteem should be developed to lower the degree of burnout of 119 rescuers. In addition, further researches to analyze works of 119 rescuers and legal and institutional strategies to improve their treatment are necessary and supplementary training in various practices by different circumstances based on standardized protocols should be conducted.

The questionnaire was composed of total 60 items, which were general characteristics of 18 items, family support of 11 items and quality of life of 31 items. Kang's(1984) scale of family support and Tae's(2000) scale of quality of life were used. The data were analyzed with SPSS WIN 10.0 program using frequency, mean±SD, t-test, ANOVA and Pearson's correlation analysis. Results: Forty three cancer patients answered the questionnaire. Twenty three patients was a male and 20 a female. Mean scale of family support according to general characteristics was 3.87±0.71. Mean scale of quality of life according to general characteristics was 5.89±1.08 and relatively high. The better degree of education, the higher quality of life significantly and the less physical discomfort, the higher quality of life significantly. The quality of life when the patient burdens the spouse with treatment cost was significantly higher. A correlation between degree of family support and quality of life was r=0.488 and the higher family support that cancer patients perceived, the higher quality of life significantly(p<0.001). Conclusion: The higher family support that cancer patients perceived, the higer quality of life significantly. We suggest concrete and systemic program for family support.
