A 4-week Repeated Oral Dose Toxicity Study of CJ-10882 in Dogs

  • The present study was conducted to investigate the potential subacute toxicity of CJ-10882 by a 4-week repeated oral dose in dogs. The test article was administered once dally by gavage to dogs at dose levels of 0, 2, 10, and 50 mg/kg/day for 4 weeks. During the test period, clinical signs, mortality, body weights, food consumption, ophthalmoscopy, urinalysis, hematology, serum biochemistry, gross finding, organ weight, and histopathology were evaluated. Several clinical sign were observed in treated dogs at 50 mg/kg, including salivation and vomiting. Increase in the serum level of ALT and albumin observed in the female 50 mg/kg group was considered as a toxic effect related to the test article since the histopathological change in Liver was accompanied. There were no treatment-related effects on mortality, food and water consumption, ophthalmoscopy, urinalysis, hematology, serum biochemistry, necropsy findings and organ weights in any treatment group. Based on these results, target organ was not observed and the no-observed-adverse-effect level (NOAEL) was 10 mg/kg/day and the absolute toxic dose was 50 mg/kg for both male and female dogs.

아침결식 예방을 위한 초등학교 영양교육 프로그램의 개발 및 평가 (Development and Evaluation of an Elementary School Nutrition Education Program to Prevent Breakfast Skipping)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate a nutrition education program to prevent breakfast skipping for elementary school children. Subjects were 102 5th grade students (51 boys, 51 girls) as the "education group" and 200 5th grade students (102 boys, 98 girls) as the "non-education group." The nutrition education program consisted of 4 lessons over an 8-week period. Teaching materials, including flash animation, panel, PowerPoint, and a bingo game, were developed for this education program. After education, there was significant increase in the percentage of students who had eaten breakfast every day, understood that breakfast has a great effect on health, and will eat breakfast every day in the education group compared to non-education group. Parents' positive behavior toward daily breakfast preparation and the percentage of parents who had their children eat breakfast every day increased significantly. The students of the education group responded positively to the questions of the benefit and importance of nutrition education. The flash animation received high marks, especially in terms of understanding of contents, content clarity, emphasis of the core content, delivery of necessary knowledge, and applicability of breakfast. This study shows the effectiveness of a 4-lesson nutrition education taught during an 8-week time period to induce changes in recognizing the importance of breakfast and in behavior toward breakfast consumption.

팔물군자탕(湯八物君子) 가미방(加味方)이 자성(雌性)생쥐의 생식능력에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of P almulgunjatang gamibang on the Ovarian Functions in Female Mice)

  • Purpose: These experiments were undertaken to evaluate the effect of administration of Palmulgunjatang gamibang on ovarian functions in female mice. Methods: We administered the Palmulgunjatang gamibang to 6-week-old female CF-1 mice for 4, 8, or 12 days. After administration of Palmulgunjatang gamibang with different concentration, the female mice were injected PMSG and hCG for ovarian hyperstimulation. The mice were divided into 3 different groups for each experiment. To compare the differences, we set a control group treated with plain water at the same volume by the same way. Results: In case of 4-day, 8-day, 12-day administration of Palmulgunjatang gamibang, the mean number of total ovulated oocytes and the number of morphologically normal oocytes were increased compared with control group. We were also examined the embryonic developmental competence in vitro. In case of 4-day administration of Palmulgunjatang gamibang, the rates of blastocyst formation from 2-cell stages were higher than control group. Conclusion: From our results suggested that the medication of Palmulgunjatang gamibang has beneficial effect on reproductive functions of female mice via promotion of cell proliferation.

치료적 중재 사이 낮잠이 뇌졸중 환자의 운동학습에 미치는 효과 (Effect of Nap between Therapeutic Interventions on Motor Learning in Patients with Stroke)

  • Purpose : The purpose of this research was to determine the effects of nap between therapeutic interventions on motor learning in patients with stroke. Method : Thirty stroke patients with hemiplegia were participated in this study. After the screening by questionnaire about nap time, the patients were assigned to nap or non-nap group. Therapeutic interventions for 30 min were provided two times per day for 5 days per week and the serial reaction time tasks were conducted 2 times before and after a nap per day for 3 days per week. Between the therapeutic interventions, a nap for 60~120 minutes was allowed to the nap group while non-nap group was not. Intervention programs were carried out during the total 15-day. Result : Compared with the non-nap group, the reaction-precision level of nap group was increased (p<.05) for the non-affected upper extremity in the serial reaction time tasks. Conclusion : This study demonstrated that nap between therapeutic interventions has positive effects on motor learning in patients with stroke.

EFFECT OF WORK CRUSHING SUGARCANE ON PREGNANCY AND LACTATION IN CATTLE AND BUFFALOES

  • The suitability of female cattle ($Brahman{\times}Holstein$) and buffaloes (Murrah / Jafarabadi) for work on a sugarcane crusher was tested. The animals were fed chopped sugarcane tops and elephant grass supplemented with rice bran and urea-molasses blocks. In experiment 1, six cattle and six buffaloes, (with three animals seven to eight months pregnant at the start of the experiment in each group), worked individually, alternate weeks for 90 minutes a day for 6 d/week. Within the 90 min, cattle did more work than buffaloes (p < 0.05), and non-pregnant animals did more than pregnant animals, but cattle crushed significantly (p < 0.05) more cane per day than buffaloes. During work animals lost weight, but gained the weight back during resting weeks, when fodder intakes were higher. There were no significant differences in live weight change and fodder intakes between pregnant and non-pregnant animals during the six weeks. In experiment 2, four pairs of lactating cows and buffaloes crushed sugarcane for 3 h/d, 6 d/week for three weeks. Work done was higher in cattle than buffaloes, but cane crushed was marginally lower. All animals lost weight during work, particularly in the first week, but gained weight during the week after work. Daily milk yield was lower during the working weeks ($-0.55{\pm}0.15kg$) than in the week before work. Butter fat yield showed no significant change. One buffalo showed ovarian activity and oestrus behaviour during the work. Two cows showed ovarian activity within one month after the work. It was concluded that pregnant and lactating cows and buffaloes can effectively operate a cane crusher, however a temporary reduction in milk yield can be expected in the working period, and ovarian activity may be suppressed.

DITI 및 전기신경전도검사(EN0G 및 EMG)를 이용한 구안와사(Bell's palsy) 환자에 대한 임상적 고찰 (Clinical Study of Bell's Palsy with DITI and Nerve Conduction Test(EN0G and EMG))

  • The clinical data and thermographic imaging were analyzed on the 38 cases of Bell's palsy who were treated admission in the Oriental Medicine Hospital of Wonkwang University from January 2002 to May 2003. 38 patients with Bell's palsy were within one week after the onset of the paralysis, and thermal type in the DITI were hypo or hyper generally. Nerve conduction test(ENOG and EMG) examined in two weeks after onset. We studied interaction effect between thermal type and paralysis grade on admission day. We studied each main effect ; paralysis grade on admission day - nerve conduction test, nerve conduction test - thermal type, thermal type - paralysis grade after 4 weeks, paralysis grade on admission day - paralysis grade after 4 weeks, sasang constitution - nerve conduction test. The following results were obtained that interaction effect between thermal type and paralysis grade on admission day showed no significance, each main effect ; paralysis grade on admission day - nerve conduction test, paralysis grade on admission day - paralysis grade after 4 weeks, showed significance, each main effect ; nerve conduction test - thermal type, thermal type - paralysis grade after 4 weeks, sasang constitution - nerve conduction test, showed no significance.

흰쥐 심근의 역 사다리 효과에 있어서 생후 연령에 따른 $Na^+\;-Ca^{2+}$ 교환의 역할에 관한 연구 (Studies on the Roles of $Na^+\;-Ca^{2+}$ Exchange according to Postnatal Age in the Negative Staircase Effect of the Rat Heart)

  • Recent reports revealed that the $Na^+-Ca^{2+}$ exchangers and feet structures of sarcoplasmic reticulum(SR) are located in close vicinity in the specific compartment. Therefore, we investigated the possibility that the $Na^+-Ca^{2+}$ exchanger may decrease the tension development by transporting the $Ca^{2+}$ out of the cell right after it released from SR, on the basis of this anatomical proximity. We exammined the negative force-frequency relationship of the developed tension in the electrically field stimulated left atria of postnatal developing rat(1, 3 day, 1 week and 4 week old after birth). Cyclopiazonic $acid(3{\times}10^{-5}\;M)$ treatment decreased the developed tension further according to postnatal age. $Monensin(3{\times}10^{-6}\;M)$ treatment did not increase the maximal tension in 4 week-old rat, preserving negative staircase, while the negative staircase in the younger rat were flattened. $Ca^{2+}$ depletion in the buffer elicited more suppression of the maximal tension according to the frequency in all groups except the 4 week-old group. The % decrease of the maximal developed tension of 4 week-old group at 1 Hz to that of 0.1 Hz after $Na^+$ and $Ca^{2+}$ depletion was only a half of those of the yonger groups. Taken together, it is concluded that the $Na^+-Ca^{2+}$ exchange transports more $Ca^{2+}$ released from SR out of the cell in proportion to the frequency, and this is responsible for the negative staircase effect of the rat heart.

유산소운동과 생활양식 프로그램 병행이 비만 여자청소년의 비만유래 대사증후군에 미치는 효과 (Effects of Aerobic Exercise Plus Lifestyle Modification Program on Obese-Induced Metabolic Syndrome in Obese Adolescent Girls)

  • 본 연구는 비만 여자중학생을 대상으로 12주간 유산소운동군(AEG), 유산소운동과 생활양식수정 병행 실시군(ALG), 대조군(CG)으로 구분하여 이들의 신체구성과 대사증후군 유병률 및 대사증후군 위험인자에 미치는 효과를 규명하기 위해 실시하였다. 프로그램 실시 전 연구대상자 전체의 대사증후군 유병률이 48.1%로 나타났으나, 프로그램 실시 후 AEG, ALG에서 각각 33.3, 27.8%의 대사증후군 유병률이 개선되었다. 대사증후군 위험인자는 AEG와 ALG에서 허리둘레, TG, 혈당 및 수축기혈압이 CG보다 더 개선되었다. 그러나 HDL-C와 이완기혈압의 변화는 집단간에 차이가 없었다. 또한 대사증후군의 모든 항목의 변화에서 AEG와 ALG간에 차이가 나타나지 않았다. 따라서 유산소운동과 생활양식수정 병행 실시군의 이 같은 긍정적인 변화는 생활양식수정 실시의 추가적인 효과가 나타나지 않았음으로 유산소운동의 단독효과인 것으로 생각된다.

  • Background: Cassia tora L., an annual or perennial plant of the Fabaceae family, is traditional medicine with various biological activities, including anti-constipation and, anti-inflammation. Chemical compounds such as anthraquinone glycoside and naphthalene derivatives have been isolated from this plant. Cassia tora L. is a common contaminant of agricultural commodities, but is toxic to cattle and poultry. Methods and Results: To investigate the potential toxicity, Cassia tora L. aqueous extract (CO) was administered orally to rats for 26 weeks at 0 (control), 300, 1,500 and 3,000 mg/kg/day (n = 10 for male rats for each dose). The positive control comprised animals orally administered anthraquinone 100 mg/kg/day. There was no treatment-related mortality. An increase in the kidney weight was observed at 3,000 mg/kg/day of CO and anthraquinone 100 mg/kg/day. Macrophage infiltration in the colon was observed at CO 1,500 and 3,000 mg/kg/day and anthraquinone 100 mg/kg/day, but there were no significant toxicological changes in the incidence and severity of the finding. Conclusions: The oral no-observed-adverse-effect level (NOAEL) of CO was 3,000 mg/kg/day in male rats and no target organs were identified. In addition, 300 mg/kg was found to be the no-observed-effect level (NOEL) for systemic toxicity under the conditions of the study.

동일 축사내에서 Aluminum Sulfate 처리와 단백질 수준에 따른 육계의 생산성과 암모니아 가스 발생 및 깔짚내 수용성 P의 함량에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Dietary Protein Levels and Addition of Alumincum Sulfate to Litter on Broiler Performance, Ammonia Production and Soluble Phosphorus Content of Litter)

  • In this study, broilers were raised up to 6 weeks of age in a single room to determine if different levels of dietary protein or addition of aluminum sulfate[alum, $Al_2$(SO$_4$)$_3$ㆍ14$H_2O$] to the litter affected growth performance, production of ammonia(NH$_3$) and soluble phosphorus(SP) content of the litter.The experimental treatments consisted of six treatments in a 2x3 factorial arrangements: T$_1$=23% protein + 0.2% alum to litter; T$_2$=21% protein + 0.2% alum to litter; T$_3$=19% protein + 0.2% alum to litter; T$_4$=23% protein + no alum; T$_{5}$=21% protein + no alum; T$_{6}$=19% protein + no alum. For broiler performance, there was no effect of alum addition to the litter, but the dietary protein levels significantly affected feed intake from days 22 to 42(P<0.05) and day 0 to 42(P< 0.05), weight gain during all periods(P<0.05 or 0.01), and feed:gain from day 0 to 21(P<0.05) and day 0 to 42(P<0.05). Alum addition to the litter did not affect body weight at 21 and 42 days, but dietary protein levels has a significant effect on it at both 21(P<0.0l) and 42 days(P<0.05).
