Many researchers have studied on the precipitation control after solution treatment to improve the damping capacity without decreasing the strength. However, studies on the damping capacity and microstructure changes after deformation in the solid solution strengthening alloys were inadequate, such as the Al-Zn series magnesium alloys. Therefore, in order to investigate the effect of annealing condition on microstructure change and damping a capacity of AZ61 magnesium alloy. In this study, it was confirmed that the microstructure changes affect the damping capacity and hardness when annealed AZ61 alloy. AZ61 magnesium alloy was rolled at $400^{\circ}C$ with rolling reduction of 30%. These specimens were annealed at $350^{\circ}C$ to $450^{\circ}C$ for 30-180 minutes. After annealing, microstructure was observed by using optical microscopy, and damping capacity was measured by using internal friction measurement machine. Hardness was measured by Vickers hardness tester under a condition of 0.3 N. In this study, static recrystallization was observed regardless of the annealing conditions. In addition, uniform equiaxed grain structure was developed by annealing treatment. Hardness is decreased with increasing grain size. This is associated with Hall-Petch equation and static recrystallization. In case of damping capacity, bigger grain size show the larger damping capacity.
The effect of oil supply pressure on the performance of vapor cavitated short squeeze film dampers is examined. Vapor cavitation is characterized by film rupture occurring as a result of evaporating oils. The pressure of vapor cavity in the film is almost zero in absolute pressure and nearly constant. Pan's model about the shape of vapor cavity is utilized for studying the effect of vapor cavitation on the damping capability of a short squeeze film damper. As the level of oil supply pressure is increasing, vapor cavitation is suppressed so that the direct damping coefficient increases and the cross coupled damping coefficient decreases. Futhermore, the analysis of the unbalance responses of a rigid rotor supported on cavitated squeeze film dampers shows that a significant reduction in rotor amplitude and force transmissibility is possible by controlling the oil supply pressure into short squeeze film dampers.
In this paper, vibration reduction techniques of a voice coil motor (VCM) actuator are presented for AFM imaging system. The damping coefficient of the actuator driven by VCM with a flexure hinge is quite low and it cause the about 30dB peak amplitude response at the resonance frequency. To decrease this peak response, we design and apply elliptical band-stop filters to xy and z axis VCM actuator. Frequency response of each actuator with filter is measured to verify the effect of the filters. As a sensor, capacitive sensor is used. Vibration reduction rate of the xy actuator with the filter is also measured while real AFM scanning condition. As another method, closed loop control with the capacitive sensor is applied to the xy axis actuator to add an electrical damping effect and vibration reduction rate measured. These vibration reduction rates with each method are compared. In the case of z axis actuator, the frequency response of force (gap) control loop is measured. For comparison, the frequency response using a conventional PID controller is also obtained. Finally, the AFM image of a standard grid sample is measured with the designed controller to analyze the effect in the AFM imaging.

This study describes an evaluation of the vibration-level reduction effect of natural rubber inserted between two aluminum blocks, in which the modal parameters are predicted using two different damping systems. A numerical model with two degrees of freedom was established for both the cases. One was an eigenvalue problem analysis using a state space method and general viscous damping, whereas the other was a method using hysteretic damping. The modal parameters obtained from these two approaches were compared with those obtained from the finite element method using a commercial package. As a result, the natural frequencies observed in the complex frequency response curve were consistently less than the average of four percents. The damping ratios also showed good agreement within a reasonable range. However, the hysteretic damping system showed a relatively larger difference for all modal parameters. This suggests that the analysis procedure makes it easier to predict the vibration transmission characteristics of the shape and configuration of any cushioning layer.

The precast-buckling restrained braces(PC-BRB) reinforced with engineering plastics that can compensate for the disadvantages in the manufacturing process of the existing buckling restrained brace. In this study, to examine the applicability of PC-BRB to actual structures, example structures similar to school facilities were selected and the reinforcement effect was analyzed analytically according to the damping design procedure of PC-BRB. Load-displacement curve through the incremental loading test appeared similar to the bilinear curve. Applying test result, Analytical model of PC-BRB model was constructed and applied to the example structure. As a result of the analysis, the PC-BRB showed stable hysteresis behavior without lowering the strength, and the inter story drift ratio and the shear force were reduced due to the damping effect. In addition, the reduction ratio of the shear force was similar to the reduction ratio assumed when designing the damping device.
This paper aims at assessing the seismic performance of Tuned Mass Dampers (TMDs) based on sets of recorded ground motions. For the simplest configuration of a structure-TMD assembly, in a comprehensive study characteristic response quantities are derived and statistically evaluated. Optimal tuning of TMD parameters is discussed and evaluated. The response reduction by application of a TMD is quantified depending on the structural period, inherent damping of the stand-alone structure, and ratio of TMD mass to structural mass. The effect of detuning on the stroke of the TMD and on the structural response is assessed and quantified. It is verified that a TMD damping coefficient larger than the optimal one reduces the peak deflection of the TMD spring significantly, whereas the response reduction of the main structure remains almost unaffected. Analytical relations for quantifying the effect of a TMD are derived and subsequently evaluated. These relations allow the engineer in practice a fast and yet accurate assessment of the TMD performance.
The ability of baffles in increasing the sloshing damping is investigated in this study by theoretical, numerical, and experimental methods. Baffles Installed as separators in containers, can change the dynamic properties of sloshing. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of baffle placement. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of placing baffles in order to provide appropriate frequencies and damping and to present a practical baffle arrangement in the design ofsloshing. In this regard, an experimental setup is designed to study the fluid sloshing behavior and damping properties in cylindrical tanks filled up to an arbitrary depth. A new combination of annular and sectorial baffles is employed to evaluate fluid sloshing in the tank. The results show that the proposed baffle arrangement has a desired effect on the damping and fluid sloshing frequencies and optimally satisfies the anticipated design requirements. In addition, the theoretical frequencies exceed empirical frequencies at the points far from baffles, while at the points close to baffles, the empirical ones are higher than theoretical ones. Also, at the depths near the bottom of container sloshing frequencies are not affected by sectorial baffles, although the theoretical curve predicts a reduction in the fundamental frequency of sloshing. Finally, the results of finite volume and finite element methods which compared with experimental data, indicated a good agreement between different approaches.

This paper presents a solution of the vibration reduction in the hollow shafts by using magentorehological( MR) elastomer. Proposed active damping structure is built by embedding the MR elastomers whose elastic modulus is controllable by an applied magnetic field. MR elastomers consist of synthetic rubber filled with micron-sized magnetizable particles. For reduction of vibration, dynamic damper of hollow shaft is designed by using MR elastomer and equipped in the hollow shaft for the application to drive shaft. Experiment results are shown through the experiments to confirm the effect of MR elastomer dynamic damper for vibration reduction. Thus, the designed damping structure can be applied to vibration absorber used in drive shafts as well as the propeller shafts.
Negative stiffness, previously emulated by active or semi-active control for cable vibration mitigation, is realized passively using a self-contained highly compressed spring, the negative stiffness device (NSD).The NSD installed in parallel with a viscous damper (VD) in the vicinity of cable anchorage, enables increment of damper deformation during cable vibrations and hence increases the attainable cable damping. Considering the small cable displacement at the damper location, even with the weakening device, the force provided by the NSD-VD assembly is approximately linear. Complex frequency analysis has thus been conducted to evaluate the damping effect of the assembly on the cable; the displacement-dependent negative stiffness is further accounted by numerical analysis, validating the accuracy of the linear approximation for practical ranges of cable and NSD configurations. The NSD is confirmed to be a practical and cost-effective solution to improve the modal damping of a cable provided by an external damper, especially for super-long cables where the damper location is particularly limited. Moreover, mathematically, a linear negative stiffness and viscous damping assembly has proven capability to represent active or semi-active control for simplified cable vibration analysis as reported in the literature, while in these studies only the assembly located near cable anchorage has been addressed. It is of considerable interest to understand the general characteristics of a cable with the assembly relieving the location restriction, since it is quite practical to have an active controller installed at arbitrary location along the cable span such as by hanging an active tuned mass damper. In this paper the cable frequency variations and damping evolutions with respect to the arbitrary assembly location are then evaluated and compared to those of a taut cable with a viscous damper at arbitrary location, and novel frequency shifts are observed. The characterized complex frequencies presented in this paper can be used for preliminary damping effect evaluation of an adaptive passive or semi-active or active device for cable vibration control.

Visco-elastic damping material for reducing heavy-weight floor impact noise and vibration in reinforced concrete structures was tested according to its thickness in the damping layer. The effect of damping material was compared with 20, 15, 10 and 5mm thickness. The wave propagation characteristics was measured for suggestion of an efficient method to reduce the floor impact noise. The method was proposed using the flexural wave propagation characteristics. The result showed that reduction of the thickness of damping layer made a slight difference; the natural frequency moved to higher frequency and the amplitude increased at low frequencies with 5mm thickness of damping material.
