  • Dust samples have been collected from streets, schools, subway stations and households in Daegu metropolitan city. Samples were sieved through a 100 ${\mu}m$ mesh and the concentration of 14 elements have been determined using by ICP after acid extraction. Results showed that Ca, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na and V were influenced by natural sources while Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn were influenced by anthropogenic sources. The measured values were remarkably higher in components from natural sources than in components from anthropogenic sources. In particular, school dust had higher levels of Ca and Pb and subway station dust had higher levels of Cu and Zn. The percentage composition of chemicals from subway stations, households, and schools were remarkably higher in components from anthropogenic sources than that from streets. It is well recognized that anthropogenic sources were affected by indoor dust. Results of pollution index of hazardous heavy metals indicated that schools, households, and subway stations were more contaminated than streets and urban areas typically had higher pollution index than rural areas. The correlation analysis among trace elements seem to suggest that there were correlations between components of soil/road dust resuspension, and components of waste incineration and fuel combustion.

  • To manufacture a flange for a compressor with a relief groove by using powder metallurgy in order to prevent deformation to the compressor in operation, powder material for the flange is charged into a mold; an ablative member having a melting point lower than that of the powder material is positioned at a place where a relief groove is to be formed; the flange is formed by compressing the powder material and the ablative member; and the formed flange is sintered at a temperature between the melting point of the powder material and the ablative member so as to melt and remove the ablative member. It made according to the new method has more excellent strength and airtight property than the conventional one. It is analyzed that the ablative member is melted and penetrated into the flange structure during the sintering process, which results in improvement of the airtight property and increase of the strength.

  • The paper presents the damage estimation of bridge structures in Daegu city based on the scenario-based earthquakes. Since the fragility curves for domestic bridge strucures are limited, the Hazus methodology is employed to derive the fragility curves and estimate the damage. A total of four earthuquake scenarios near Daegu city are assumed and structure damage is investigated for 81 bridge structures. The seismic fragility function and damage level of each bridge had adopted from the analytical method in HAZUS and then, the damage probability using seismic fragility function for each bridge was evaluated. It was concluded that the seismic damage to bridges was higher when the magnitude of the earthquake was large or nearer to the epicenter.

  • This study was carried out to investigate lead contamination in the leaves of roadside trees and the cause of yellow-brown symptom of leaves in Jinju and Daegu city. After the leaves were collected and dried in 105$^{\circ}C$ drying oven from September to October in 1974, the samples were used for analysis of the lead contents in 1976. The roadside trees in the two cities were mostly the four kinds of Ginkgo biloba L., Thuja orientalis L., Platanus orientalis L. var. acerifolia AIT. and Prunus pseudo-cerasus $LINDL{\times}Prunus$ subhirtella MIQ. The lead contents in the leaves of roadside trees in Daegu city was higher than that of Jinju city. The lead contamination of the evergreen trees of roadside was higher than that of the deciduous trees. In Jinju city the site of the highest contents of lead in the leaves was revealed with Jinju station(0.73ppm), the next site was revealed with the road(0.16ppm) between Namgang bridge and Jinju middle school, and the lowest site was generally beside the roads of suburbs (0.07ppm). Because of the low contents of lead in the leaves, it was found that the yellow-brown symptoms of leaves were not caused by the lead toxicity.
