  • This paper presents qualification process of the T700/701K turbo-shaft engine for Korean Utility Helicopter(KUH). The T700/701K is the rear-drive variant of the GE's T700-701C/D engine which was qualified for military applications in the world. The main scope of the development is the modification from a front-drive engine to a rear-drive one, the performance enhancement of the power turbine and the incorporation of two channel FADEC(Full Authority Digital Engine Control) system for more reliable operation. Therefore, T700/701K engine must be qualified by Korean government in order to perform a flight in the country. Reflecting the influence of developing scope, the main requirements including performance and control are verified by test and analysis, while the requirement for module or component that is same to that of T700-701C/D are verified by similarity.

A Fault Tolerant Control Technique for Hybrid Modular Multi-Level Converters with Fault Detection Capability

  • In addition to its modular nature, a Hybrid Modular Multilevel Converter (HMMC) assembled from half-bridge and full-bridge sub-modules, is able to block DC faults with a minimum number of switching devices, which makes it attractive for high power applications. This paper introduces a control strategy based on the Root-Least Square (RLS) algorithm to estimate the capacitor voltages instead of using direct measurements. This action eliminates the need for voltage transducers in the HMMC sub-modules and the associated communication link with the central controller. In addition to capacitor voltage balancing and suppression of circulating currents, a fault tolerant control unit (FTCU) is integrated into the proposed strategy to modify the parameters of the HMMC controller. On advantage of the proposed FTCU is that it does not need extra components. Furthermore, a fault detection unit is adapted by utilizing a hybrid estimation scheme to detect sub-module faults. The behavior of the suggested technique is assessed using PSCAD offline simulations. In addition, it is validated using a real-time digital simulator connected to a real time controller under various normal and fault conditions. The proposed strategy shows robust performance in terms of accuracy and time response since it succeeds in stabilizing the HMMC under faults.

Development and Evaluation of Smart Secondary Controls Using iPad for People with Hemiplegic Disabilities

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate smart secondary controls using iPad for the drivers with physical disabilities in the driving simulator. Background: The physically disabled drivers face problems in the operation of secondary control devices that accept a control input from a driver for the purpose of operating the subsystems of a motor vehicle. Many of conventional secondary controls consist of small knobs or switches that physically disabled drivers have difficulties in grasping, pulling or twisting. Therefore, their use while driving might increase distraction and workload because of longer operation time. Method: We examined the operation time of conventional and smart secondary controls, such as hazard warning, turn signal, window, windshield wiper, headlights, automatic transmission and horn. The hardware of smart secondary control system was composed of iPad, wireless router, digital input/output module and relay switch. We used the STISim Drive3 software for driving test, customized Labview and Xcode programs for interface control of smart secondary system. Nine subjects were involved in the study for measuring operation time of secondary controls. Results: When the driver was in the stationary condition, the average operation time of smart secondary devices decreased 32.5% in the normal subjects (p <0.01), 47.4% in the subjects with left hemiplegic disabilities (p <0.01) and 38.8% in the subjects with right hemiplegic disabilities (p <0.01) compared with conventional secondary devices. When the driver was driving for the test in the simulator, the average operation time of smart secondary devices decreased 36.1% in the normal subjects (p <0.01), 41.7% in the subjects with left hemiplegic disabilities (p <0.01) and 34.1% in the subjects with right hemiplegic disabilities (p <0.01) compared with conventional secondary devices. Conclusion: The smart secondary devices using iPad for people with hemiplegic disabilities showed significant reduction of operation time compared with conventional secondary controls. Application: This study can be used to design secondary controls for adaptive vehicles and to improve the quality of life of the people with disabilities.

A Frequency Synthesizer for Ka band compact Radar using DDS (DDS를 이용한 Ka 대역 소형 레이다용 주파수합성기)

  • In this paper, we designed a frequency synthesizer using DDS (Direct Digital Synthesizer) for Ka-band compact Radar. DDS is applied to generate various waveform and to cover high-speed frequency sweep. In order to reduce size, waveform generator and Ka band frequency up-converter are integrated in one module. Proposed frequency synthesizer provides LFM(Linear Frequency Modulation) waveform and Phase modulated FMCW (Frequency Modulation Continuous Wave) waveform. It is observed that fabricated synthesizer performs $0.191{\mu}sec$ frequency switching time and -89.16 dBc/Hz phase noise at offset 1 kHz.

A Design for Solid-State Radar SSPA with Sequential Bias Circuits (순차바이어스를 이용한 반도체 레이더용 SSPA 설계)

  • In this paper, we present a design for solid-state radar SSPA with sequential bias. We apply to variable extension pulse generator to eliminate signal distortion which is caused by bias rising/falling delay of power amplifier. There is an optimum impedance matching circuit to have high efficiency of GaN-power device by measuring microwave characteristics through load-pull method. The designed SSPA is consisted of pre-amplifier, drive-amplifier and main-amplifier as a three stages to apply for X-Band solid-state radar. Thereby we made a 200W SSPA which has output pulse maximum power shows 53.67dBm and its average power is 52.85dBm. The optimum design of transceiver module for solid-state pulse compression radar which is presented in this dissertation, it can be available to miniaturize and to improve the radar performances through additional research for digital radar from now on.

  • In this paper, we design and implement a digital LCD stopwatch function of the remote control. The central controller and LCD stopwatch is implemented based on the clock signal of the crystal oscillator of 8MHz by using ATmega8 processor in the AVR representative series of ATMEL, Communication module basic, ZBS-using the ISM 2.4GHz frequency band at 100. Stopwatch of remote control that has been proposed, it is possible to solve the three problems. First, it is possible to solve the sight deviation between broadcast camera and panelists glance to large LCD stopwatch monitors. Second, it is possible to avoid the trouble of broadcasting cameras cross replacement, Third, it is possible to minimize the inconvenient of the viewer corresponding to the operation of the horizontal movement of the broadcast camera.

Design and Implementation of Multi-Channel WLL RF-module for Multimedia Transmission (멀티미디어 전송을 위한 무선가입자용 RF-모듈의 설계 및 제작)

  • In this paper, the RF-modules composed of front-end, frequency synthesizer, modulator/demodulator and power control multi channel WLL personal system for W-CDMA using 10 [MHz] RF channel bandwidth has been implemented and considered. The measured transmission power is 250 [mW] which is very close to the required value. The measured flatness of power at the final output stage is ${\pm}1.5[dB]$ over the required bandwidth of the receiver. In addition, it is found that the chip rate transmitting spread signal is set to 8.192 [MHz], the required rate. The frequencies of RF_LO signal and LO signal of the modulator and the demodulator measured by a frequency synthesizer are satisfied with design requirements. The operating range of the receiving strength signal indicator and AGC units shows 60 [dB] respectively. Also the measured phasor diagram and eye pattern for deciding the RF modules compatible with baseband digital signal processing part are shown good results.

  • In this paper, we propose a new ECAD software for efficiently analyzing and debugging of digital architecture implemented in Verilog HDL or VHDL codes. This software firstly elaborates HDL codes so as to extract internal architecture structure, then generates several graphical aids such as hierarchical schematics by applying placement and routing algorithm, object tree to show configuration of each module, instance tree to show hierarchical structure of instances, and SPD (Signal Propagation Diagram) to show internal interconnections. It is more important function that same objects in different views(HDL codes, object tree, instance tree, SPD, waveform etc.) can be highlighted at the starting any object. These functions are sure to improve efficiency of manual job to fix bugs or to analyze HDL codes.

Design and Implementation of High-quality Video Service with Adaptive Transport for Multi-party Collaborative Environments (다자간 원격 협업을 위한 적응형 전송 기능을 가진 고화질 영상 서비스의 설계 및 구현)

  • To construct seamless collaborative environments, what all participants intent should be delivered, and visual elements such gesture, facial expression, and ambiance should be shared with all participants. In this paper, we propose high-quality video service to support DV(digital video) and HDV(high-definition DV) based on Access Grid(AG) which is a prevalent collaborative system. The proposed service is designed for employing versatile media tools and codecs with SDP(session description protocol) and SAP(session announcement protocol). We also design network-adaptive video transmission module to mitigate the impact of network fluctuation. This periodically monitors multicast performance and controls frame rate on sender side considering network condition. The experimental results over the test bed show that proposed service enhances quality of AG video service and provides seamless high-quality video transport by mitigating the impact of network fluctuation.

A Bluetooth Scatternet Formation Algorithm based on Hardware Implementation (하드웨어 구현을 기반으로 한 블루투스 스캐터넷 형성 알고리즘)

  • Bluetooth has been reputed as a wireless ad-hoc networking technology supplying scalable and extensible networks between digital devices. For that kind of networks, scatternet is a most essential part in bluetooth. But past researches on bluetooth scatternet has proposed only possibilities of scatternet algorithm based on simulation results. And many of the researches failed in guaranteeing extensibility and flexibility and had many difficulties in real hardware implementation. In this paper, we proposed node ring scatternet(NRS) algorithm guaranteeing extensible and flexible networks. NRS algorithm is designed for hardware implementation using real commercial bluetooth module. That algorithm is divided into initial formation and reformation. For initial formation, we proposed limited SEEK/SCAN algorithm. For reformation, we proposed DIAC algorithm and Reserved Recovery Node algorithm. And we proposed SFMP(Scatternet Formation & Management Protocol) in protocol stack for real implementation. NRS algorithm is operated in SFMP. Finally, we performed real hardware experiments and evaluated the proposed algorithm. In that experiments, we succeeded in forming scatternet up to 20 nodes. In comparison with other similar algorithm, proposed algorithm have the improvement in scatternet formation delay and success rate.
