The Status of Domestic Hydrogen Production, Consumption, and Distribution (국내 수소 생산, 소비 및 유통 현황)

  • This paper deals with the survey of domestic hydrogen production, consumption, and distribution. The amount of domestic hydrogen production and consumption has not been identified, and we survey the amount of domestic hydrogen production and consumption by industries. The hydrogen production industries are classified into the oil industry, the petrochemical industry, the chemical industry, and the other industry. In 2004, the amount of domestic hydrogen production was 972,601 ton, which corresponded to 1.9% of the global hydrogen production. The oil industry produced 635,683 ton(65.4%), the petrochemical industry produced 241,970 ton(24.9%), the chemical industry produced 66,250 ton(6.8%), the other industry produced 28,698 ton(2.9%). The hydrogen consumptions of corresponding industries were close to the hydrogen productions of industries except that of the other industry. Most hydrogen was used as non-energy for raw materials and hydrogen additions to the process. Only 122,743 ton(12.6%) of domestic hydrogen was used as energy for heating boilers. In 2004, 47,948 ton of domestic hydrogen was distributed. The market shares of pipeline, tube trailers and cylinders were 84.4% and 15.6%, respectively. The purity of 31,848 ton(66.4%) of the distributed hydrogen was 99.99%, and 16,100 ton(33.6%) was greater than or equal to 99.999%. Besides domestic hydrogen, we also identify the byproduct gases which contain hydrogen. The iron industry produces COG( coke oven gas), BFG(blast furnace gas), and LDG(Lintz Donawitz converter gas) that contain hydrogen. In 2004, byproduct gases of the iron industry contained 355,000 ton of hydrogen.

  • We have been developing an underwater robot for harbour construction using a parallel mechanism The robot is attached to the rope of a crane, which curries a large stone into the undersea The robot's yaw and pitch are controlled by hydraulic cylinders but its roll is uncontrollable. We mount propellers in both side of the robot to generate the roll motion This paper studies on the control for the roll motion of a underwater robot. A gyro-sensor is used to measure the angle in a roll motion We develop the dynamic model to describe the robot's roll motion by a second order non-linear system and identify the model parameters by recursive least square and adaptive identifier. PD control, recursive model based control and adaptive model based control are applied with the dynamic model which computes the control input to compensate disturbances. This paper introduces the underwater robot system and presents the simulated and experimental results of the proposed controller.

Development of Transportational Guide System for Joining Small Wire with Gabion (개비온 끝단 소둔선 결합용 이송 가이드 장치 개발 연구)

  • Gabion can be used for the purpose of preventing overflow of river and side loss of road. However the manufacturing process of the gabion is manually controlled especially to the joining process at the terminal part of gabion with small diameter wire. In this paper automatic feeding guide system was designed and fabricated to make automation. The fabricated system was tested in the factory level. Pneumatic system was considered as the main idea of the feeding system. 3/2-way and 5/2-way manual control valve, eight double-acting cylinders were used. The system took 46.48 seconds during a cycle. Additional environmental noise and vibration were not detected when the machine operated at the working area. Based on the theoretical simulation and actual test the fabricated system was well controlled. The system was applied to the patent in 2006.

  • Block copolymers spontaneously assemble into various nanoscale structures such as spheres, cylinders, and lamellar structures according to the relative volumn ratio of each macromolecular block and their overall molecular weights. The self-assembled structures of block copolymer have been extensively investigated for the applications such as nanocomposites, photonic crystals, nanowires, magnetic-storage media, flash memory devices. However, the naturally formed nanostructures of block copolymers contain a high density of defects such that the practical applications for nanoscale devices have been limited. For the practical application of block copolymer nanostructures, a robust process to direct the assembly of block copolymers in thin film geometry is required to be established. To exploit self-assembly of block copolymer for the nanotechnology, it is indispensible to fabricate defect-free self-assembled nanostructure over an arbitrarily large area.

Study on the Clamping Force and the Friction Coefficient in a Bolt tightened up to the Plastic Range (소성역체결 볼트의 체결력과 마찰계수에 관한 연구)

  • When a bolt is tightened up to the range of plastic deformation, yielding may be governed by the combined stresses due to the axial force developed in the bolt and the frictional torque induced on the thread by the contact with the nut. Consideration is taken account of the fact that the unengaged portion of the thread has least sectional area, being subject to initial yielding. Once yielding has taken place some strain hardening effect may result. Incremental stress-strain relations are used to treat the continued yielding, which is equivalent to treat continued yielding as if summing up the effects of thin walled cylinders subject to plastic deformation. M10 bolts of fine threads are used for both computational and experimental purposes. Variation of axial forces and frictional torques vs. the frictional coefficients are presented together with other plots showing some characterist of bolt under plastic deformation. Finally, a design and control aid for the tightening(i.e., kind of nomograph) is presented, showing the relationships among the torque factor and frictional coefficients for that particular bolt used in the experiment.

Numerical simulation of fish nets in currents using a Morison force model

  • For complex flexible structures such as nets, the determination of drag forces and its deformation is a challenging task. The accurate prediction of loads on cages is one of the key steps in designing fish farm facilities. The basic physics with a simple cage, can be addressed by the use of experimental studies. However, to design more complex cage system for various environmental conditions, a reliable numerical simulation tool is essential. In this work, the current load on a cage is calculated using a Morison-force model applied at instantaneous positions of equivalent-net modeling. Variations of solidity ratio ($S_n$) of the net and current speed are considered. An equivalent array of cylinders is built to represent the physical netting. Based on the systematic comparisons between the published experimental data for Raschel nets and the current numerical simulations, carried out using the commercial software OrcaFlex, a new formulation for $C_d$ values, used in the equivalent-net model, is presented. The similar approach can also be applied to other netting materials following the same procedure. In case of high solidity ratio and current speed, the hybrid model defines $C_d$ as a function of Re (Reynolds number) and $S_n$ to better represent the corresponding weak diffraction effects. Otherwise, the conventional $C_d$ values depending only on Re can be used with including shielding effects for downstream elements. This new methodology significantly improves the agreement between numerical and experimental data.

Simulation for the Prediction of Indicated Performances of a Gasoline Engine Using GT-POWER (가솔린 기관의 도시성능 예측을 위한 시뮬레이션: GT-POWER를 이용한 경우)

  • As a preliminary study for the development of the gas fueled marine engine, prediction of indicated performances was carried out for a spark-ignition engine using commercial software, GT-POWER. The optimized models through a previous study were applied for the simulation of the intake and exhaust systems in a SI engine. The Spark-Ignition Wiebe model was used to calculate the burn rate in the cylinders and the modified Woschni model was used to calculate the heat transfer to the walls. The predicted performances, such as air delivery, cylinder pressures and indicated mean effective pressures under a range of operating conditions showed good agreement with the experiments.

  • As for the added mass moment of inertia of ships in torsional vibration, it seems that the works by T. Kumai[1,2] are the only systematic one available currently. The work[1] is for the calculation of the two dimensional correction factors with finitely-long elliptic cylinders as the mathematic model. In this work the authors recalculated the above factors, $J_{\tau}$, with the same mathematic model and the same problem formulation, and presented the numerical results in Fig. 1. The reason why the reinvestigation was done was that in Kumai's work he obtained the solutions of the Mathieu equations, which was derived from the problem formulation for the velocity potential, under the assumption that the dummy constant q involved in the equations was always far less than unity, whereas in fact it takes values within the region of $0<q{\leq}{\infty}$ in sequence. As a result the authors found two remarkable differences in general features of $J_{\tau}$(refer to Fg.3); one that the authors' numerical results are considerably higher than the results given in [2], and the other that for a given number of node those have properties of decreasing monotonically with increase of the beam-draft ratio while these rapidly decrease from a maximum value of near at B/T=2.00 with B/T becoming greater or less than ratio. It seems that the latter trend was resulted from the fact that the assumption of $q{\ll}1$ employed in [2] was more closely satisfied in the vicinity of B/T=2.00.

Effect of field-of-view size on gray values derived from cone-beam computed tomography compared with the Hounsfield unit values from multidetector computed tomography scans

  • Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of field-of-view (FOV) size on the gray values derived from cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) compared with the Hounsfield unit values from multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) scans as the gold standard. Materials and Methods: A radiographic phantom was designed with 4 acrylic cylinders. One cylinder was filled with distilled water, and the other 3 were filled with 3 types of bone substitute: namely, Nanobone, Cenobone, and Cerabone. The phantom was scanned with 2 CBCT systems using 2 different FOV sizes, and 1 MDCT system was used as the gold standard. The mean gray values(MGVs) of each cylinder were calculated in each imaging protocol. Results: In both CBCT systems, significant differences were noted in the MGVs of all materials between the 2 FOV sizes(P<.05) except for Cerabone in the Cranex3D system. Significant differences were found in the MGVs of each material compared with the others in both FOV sizes for each CBCT system. No significant difference was seen between the Cranex3D CBCT system and the MDCT system in the MGVs of bone substitutes on images obtained with a small FOV. Conclusion: The size of the FOV significantly changed the MGVs of all bone substitutes, except for Cerabone in the Cranex3D system. Both CBCT systems had the ability to distinguish the 3 types of bone substitutes based on a comparison of their MGVs. The Cranex3D CBCT system used with a small FOV had a significant correlation with MDCT results.

Current Effect on the Motion and Drift Force of Cylinders Floating in Waves (주상체(柱狀體)의 운동(運動) 및 표류력(漂流力)에 미치는 해류(海流)의 영향(影響))

  • A two-dimensional linear method has been developed for the motion and the second-order steady force arising from the hydrodynamic coupling between waves and currents in the presence of a body of arbitrary shape. Interaction between the incident wave and current in the absence of the body lies in the realm beyond our interest. A Fredholm integral equation of the second kind is employed in association with the Haskind's potential for a steadily moving source of pulsating strength located in or below the free surface. The numerical calculations at the preliminary stage showed a significant fluctuation of the hydrodynamic forces on the surface-piercing body. The problem is approximately solved by using the asymptotic Green function for $U^2{\rightarrow}0$. The original Green function, however, is applied for the fully submerged body. Numerical calculations are made for a submerged and for a half-immersed circular cylinder and extensively for the mid-ship section of a Lewis-form. Some of the results are compared with other analytical results without any available experimental data. The current has strong influence on roll motion near resonance. When the current opposes the waves, the roll response are generally negligible in the low frequency region. The current has strong influence on roll motion near resonance. When the current opposes the wave, the roll response decreases. When the current and wave come from the same direction, the roll response increases significantly, as the current speed increases. The mean drift forces and moment on the submerged body are more affected by current than those on the semi-immersed circular cylinder or on the ship-like section in the encounter frequency domain.
