  • The ride-through control of a doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) for the voltage sags on wind farms utilizing crowbar circuits by which the rotor side converter (RSC) is disabled has being reported in many literatures. An analysis and calculation of the transient current when the RSC is switched off are of significance for carrying out the low voltage ride through (LVRT) of a DFIG. The mathematical derivation is highlighted in this paper. The zero-state and zero-input responses of the transient current in the frequency domain through a Laplace transformation are investigated, and the transient components in the time domain are achieved. With the characteristics worked out from the linear resolving without modeling simplification, the selection of the resistance in the linear crowbar circuit and the value conversion from a linear circuit to a nonlinear one is proposed to setup the attenuation rate. In terms of grid code requirements, the theoretical analysis for the time constant of the transient components attenuation insures the controllability when the excitation of the RSC is resumed and it guarantees the reserved time for the response of the reactive power compensation. Simulations are executed in MATLAB/SIMPOWER and experiments are carried out to validate the theoretical analysis. They indicate that the calculation method is effective for selection of the resistance in a crowbar circuit for LVRT operations.

  • Serious environmental problems have been caused by the greenhouse effect due to carbon dioxide($CO_2$) or nitrogen oxides($NO_x$) generated by the use of fossil fuels, including oil and liquefied natural gas. Many countries, including our own, the United States, those of the European Union and other developed countries around the world; have shown growing interest in clean energy, and have been concentrating on the development of new energy-saving materials and devices. Typical non-fossil-fuel sources include solar cells, wind power, tidal power, nuclear power, and fuel cells. In particular, organic solar cells(OSCs) have relatively low power-conversion efficiency(PCE) in comparison with inorganic(silicon) based solar cells, compound semiconductor solar cells and the CIGS [$Cu(In_{1-x}Ga_x)Se_2$] thin film solar cells. Recently, organic cell efficiencies greater than 10 % have been obtained by means of the development of new organic semiconducting materials, which feature improvements in crystalline properties, as well as in the quantum-dot nano-structure of the active layers. In this paper, a brief overview of solar cells in general is presented. In particular, the current development status of the next-generation OSCs including their operation principle, device-manufacturing processes, and improvements in the PCE are described.

  • The heavy reliance on fossil fuels, especially oil and gas has triggered the global energy crisis. Continued use of petroleum fuels is now widely recognized as unsustainable because of their depleting supplies and degradation to the environment. To become less dependent on fossil fuels, current world is shifting paradigm in energy by developing alternative energy sources mainly through the utilization of renewable energy sources. In particular, bioenergy recovery from wastes with the help of microorganism is viewed as one of the promising ways to mitigate the current global warming crisis as well as to supply global energy. It has been proved that microorganism can generate power by converting organic matter into electricity using microbial fuel cells (MFCs). MFC is a bioelectrochemical device that employs microbes to generate electricity from bio-convertible substrate such as wastewaters including municipal solid waste, industrial, agriculture wastes, and sewage. Sustainability, carbon neutral and generation of renewable energy are some of the major features of MFCs. However, the MFC technology is confronted with a number of issues and challenges such as low power production, high electrode material cost and so on. This paper reviews the recent developments in MFC technology with due consideration of electrode materials used in MFCs. In addition, application of biocathodes in MFCs has been discussed.

  • An analysis model considered the manufacturing factors and the pellet size has been developed in order to predict the performance characteristics of thermoelectric modules as generators. Since the electrical internal resistance has a significant role in the performance of thermoelectric modules, the variations of electrical internal resistance with operating temperature are experimentally measured. The modified electrical internal resistance calculated from an experimental correlation is applied to the analysis model. To verify the modified analysis model, the output voltage, output current and output power are compared with experimental results for the operating temperature conditions of $T_h=85^{\circ}C$ and ${\Delta}T=40^{\circ}C$. The modified analysis shows a good agreement with the experimental results in terms of the output voltage, current, and power.

  • Medical X-ray has been brought many changes according to the rapid development of high technology. Especially, for high-voltage generator which is the most important in X-ray generation the traditional way is to use high-voltage electric transformers primarily. However, since it is large and heavy and the ripple rate of DC high-voltage applied to X-ray tube is too big, it has a disadvantage of low X-ray production efficiency. To solve these problems, the studies about high-voltage power supply are now proceeding. At present, the high-voltage generator that generates high-voltage by making high frequency using inverter control circuit consisting of semiconductor device is mainly used. High-voltage generator using inverter has advantages in the diagnosis using X-ray including high performance with short-term use, miniaturization of power supply and ripple reduction. In this study, the X-ray high-voltage device with inverter type using pulse width modulation scheme to the control of tube voltage and tube current was designed and produced. For performance evaluation of produced device, the control signal analysis, irradiation dose change and beam quality depending on the load variation of tube voltage and tube current were evaluated.

  • The bi-directional converter interfaces the low voltage battery to the inverter do link of FC generation system. When power flows from the low voltage side(battery: 48[V]) to the high voltage side(dc link: 380[V]), the circuit works in discharge mode (boost) to power the high voltage side load; otherwise, it works in charge mode (buck) to charge the low voltage side battery. In this paper, the 1.5[kW] active clamp current-fed full bridge converter employing MOSFETs is operated to discharge the battery whereas a voltage-fed half bridge converter employing IGBTs is operated to charge the battery.

  • Background: A technique developed to produce artificial intergranular stress corrosion cracks in structural components was applied to thick, forged alloy 600 base and alloy 182 weld metals for use in the qualification of nondestructive examination techniques for welded components in nuclear power plants. Methods: An externally controlled procedure was demonstrated to produce intergranular stress corrosion cracks that are comparable to service-induced cracks in both the base and weld metals. During the process of crack generation, an online direct current potential drop method using array probes was used to measure and monitor the sizes and shapes of the cracks. Results: A microstructural characterization of the produced cracks revealed realistic conformation of the crack faces unlike those in machined notches produced by an electrodischarge machine or simple fatigue loading using a universal testing machine. Conclusion: A comparison with a destructive metallographic examination showed that the characteristics, orientations, and sizes of the intergranular cracks produced in this study are highly reproducible.

  • The supercritical $CO_2$ (S-$CO_2$) Brayton cycle has recently been gaining a lot of attention for application to next generation nuclear reactors. The advantages of the S-$CO_2$ cycle are high efficiency in the mild turbine inlet temperature region and a small physical footprint with a simple layout, compact turbomachinery, and heat exchangers. Several heat sources including nuclear, fossil fuel, waste heat, and renewable heat sources such as solar thermal or fuel cells are potential application areas of the S-$CO_2$ cycle. In this paper, the current development progress of the S-$CO_2$ cycle is introduced. Moreover, a quick comparison of various S-$CO_2$ layouts is presented in terms of cycle performance.

To use this hybrid generation system stably and effectively, we established a system which can acquire, analyse and save data and monitored remotely using internet. We constructed the signal conditioning circuit and used many kinds of converters to measure physical quantities such as wind velocity, intensity of illumination and temperature as well as many kinds of voltage and current for AC and DC. we acquired data from computer with data acquisition board, developed server program and client program which can download data that is monitored and saved in realtime at remote place. We analysed the measured data in relation to many conditions such as time and weather conditions.
