Effects of Turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) Bioactivity Compounds and Lipid Peroxidation Inhibitory Action (울금(Curcuma longa L.)의 생리활성 및 지질과산화 저해능에 미치는 영향)

  • The aim was to determine the physiological activity and antioxidant activity by lipid peroxidation inhibitory action of turmeric (Curcuma longa L.). Bioactive compound of total carotenoid $1.581{\pm}0.005mg$ ${\beta}$-carotene equivalents (BCE)/g dry weight. Total phenol content was the highest in the ethyl acetate (EA) extract, followed by chloroform:methanol (CM, 2:1, v/v) and 70% methanol extracts. Antioxidant effects (nitrogen oxide radical scavenging activity, nitrite scavenging activity, ${\beta}$-carotene bleaching assay, and lipid peroxidation inhibition action) of 70% methanol, CM, and EA extract of turmeric. Turmeric extracts yield were 70% methanol 16.54%, CM 5.64%, and EA 4.14%, respectively. Antioxidant activity of the samples exhibited a dose-dependent increase. However, in the current study, none of the samples evaluated showed activity as strong as the BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole) and trolox. Further, nitrite scavenging activity was the highest for the EA extract. As a result of this experiment, indicating their commercial value and potential applications in food and nutraceuticals.

  • The aim of the present investigation was to assess the oxidation inhibition by nitrogen oxide scavenging activity and physiological activities. Bioactive compound of proanthocyanidin $69.000{\pm}2.737mg$ catechin equivalents (CE)/g dry weight. Antioxidant effects (nitric oxide radical scavenging activity, nitrite scavenging activity, ${\beta}$-carotene bleaching assay and lipid peroxidation inhibition activity) of distilled water (DW), 70% ethanol and n-butanol extract of turmeric (Curcuma longa L.). Turmeric extracts yield were DW 17.11%, 70% ethanol 15.26% and n-butanol 4.12%, respectively. Oxidation inhibition activity of the samples exhibited a dose-dependent increase. However, in the current study, none of the samples evaluated showed activity as strong as the BHA and trolox. Total flavonoid content was the highest in the n-butanol extract, followed by 70% ethanol and DW extract. Further, nitrite scavenging activity was the highest for the n-butanol extract. As a result of this experiment, the turmeric can be utilized as a valuable and potential natural oxidation inhibition for the functional food industry.

  • This study covers the historical aspects of the turmeric and curcuma only in detail on the medicinal uses, supported by references to the medical texts. And the result is as follows: 1. Turmeric and curcuma are rhizomatous herbaceous perennial plants of the ginger family, but both produced on the same herb. The rhizome is considered turmeric while the tuber is considered curcuma. 2. Turmeric is the round, oval, or ovate, and scutiform rhizome. 3. Curcuma is yellowish externally, internally more or less orange-yellow passing into reddish-brown. The tuber has a round and cuspidate appearance. The smell is aromatic, somewhat analogous to ginger. 4. Turmeric is somewhat analogous to curcuma in shape, but turmeric is pungent and bitter in taste, warm and intoxious in property, and yellow in color, acting on the spleen and liver channels and governing the gi of the blood while curcuma is pungent and bitter in taste, cold and intoxious in property, red in color, acting on the heart and pericardium channels and governing the blood. 5. Turmeric is referred to zedoary, sliced turmeric, old jaundice, precious aromatic, and ovate rhizoma, and curcuma is referred to radix curcuma, curcuma aromatica, and cicada-belly curcuma

Effects of the Physiological Activities and Oxidation Inhibitory Action of Turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) by Various Solvents (울금(Curcuma longa L.)의 용매 별 추출물이 생리활성 및 산화억제에 미치는 영향)

  • The aim of the present study was to evaluate of turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) on the physiological activities and oxidation inhibitory action. The effects of various solvents (distilled water DW, 70% ethanol and n-butanol) on the total phenolics content (TPC) of turmeric and their corresponding biological activity were studied. Bioactive compound of total saponin $7.506{\pm}0.349mg\;SE/g$ dry weight. Turmeric extracts yield were DW (17.11%), 70% ethanol (15.26%) and n-butanol (4.12%), respectively. Oxidation inhibitory action of the samples exhibited a dose-dependent increase. However, in the current study, none of the samples evaluated showed activity as strong as the BHA, ascorbic acid and EDTA. Results showed that extraction solvent had significant effects on TPC and oxidation inhibitory action (DPPH radical scavenging activity, ABTS radical scavenging activity, reducing power and ferric reducing antioxidant power) of n-butanol. Turmeric exhibited the antioxidant properties, which suggests that the plant material could be used for further studies as a potential source for bioactive and natural antioxidant.

Effects of Curcuma longa $L_{INNE}$ Pharmacopuncture at $ST_{36}$ on Adjuvant Induced Arthritis in Rats (강황(薑黃)약침이 CFA로 유발된 류마티스성 관절염에 미치는 영향)

  • Objectives : The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of Curcuma longa $L_{INNE}$ pharmacopuncture at $ST_{36}$ on Complete Freund's Adjuvant(CFA)-induced arthritis in rats. Materials and methods : Arthritis was induced by injecting CFA subcutaneously into the left knee joint and paw, and Curcuma longa $L_{INNE}$ pharmacopuncture(CLL-A. $0.0343{\mu}g/kg$; CLL-B. $0.171{\mu}g/kg$; CLL-C. $0.343{\mu}g/kg$) was injected at $ST_{36}$ each other day for 5 times beginning on day 10 after the CFA injection. Paw edema, withdrawal response, hematological, serological and histological observation were assessed. Results : In paw edema volume all 3 groups(CLL-A, CLL-B, CLL-C) showed significant decrease compared to the CFA control group. In withdrawal response to reaction time and withdrawal response to force all 3 groups(CLL-A, CLL-B, CLL-C) showed significant increase compared to the CFA control group. In serum AST, group CLL-C showed significant decrease compared to the CFA control group. In histological observations, in all 3 groups, more normal chondrocytes were observed compared to the CFA control group and safranin O stain showed high positive reaction in the cartilage tissue close to the bone tissue. Conclusions : The results suggest that Curcuma longa $L_{INNE}$ Pharmacopuncture at $ST_{36}$ has a suppressing inflammation effect on Freund's adjuvant arthritis in rats.

Effects of Turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) on Lipid Component and Protein Concentration in Dyslipidemic Rats (울금(Curcuma longa L.) 첨가 식이가 이상지질혈증 흰쥐의 지질성분 및 단백질 농도에 미치는 영향)

  • This study aimed to investigate the improvement effect of turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) on the lipid component, protein and electrolyte concentration in dyslipidemic rats. Sprague-Dawley rats (24 male) were divided into four groups, namely the ND (normal-nondyslipidemic diet), NT (normal-nondyslipidemic diet+5% turmeric), DD (control-dyslipidemic diet), and DT groups (dyslipidemic diet+5% turmeric). Rats were sacrificed at the end of 5 weeks after experiment diet. In this study, turmeric diet (NT, DT) groups in lipid composition as evidenced from the significantly reduction of serum total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-cholesterol), atherosclerotic index (AI), cardiac risk factor (CRF), triglyceride (TG), phospholipid (PL), free cholesterol, cholesteryl ester, blood glucose and non esterified fatty acid (NEFA), and elevation of high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-cholesterol) (p<0.05). The serum globulin concentration was significantly decreased (p<0.05), and the albumin concentrations were increased in turmeric diet than dyslipidemic rats. Concentrations of sodium (Na) and chlorine (Cl) in sera were lower in the DT group than DD group. Concentrations of total calcium (T-Ca), phosphorus (Pi) and potassium (K) in sera were higher in the ND, NT and DT groups than DD group. Therefore, it was concluded that the 5% turmeric diet used in the condition of this study had a beneficial effect on dyslipidemia.

Effects of Ethanol Extracts from Zingiber officinale Rosc., Curcuma longa L., and Curcuma aromatica Salisb. on Acetylcholinesterase and Antioxidant Activities as well as GABA Contents (생강, 울금, 강황 추출물의 항산화 효과, AChE 억제활성 및 GABA 함량)

  • This study investigated the cognition-related effects on antioxidant activities, ${\gamma}$-aminobutyric acid (GABA) contents, and AChE inhibitory activities in ethanol extracts from Zingiber officinale Rosc. (Korea), Curcuma longa L. (Korea), Curcuma longa L. (Myanmar), and Curcuma aromatica Salisb. (India). These extracts were investigated to determine the relationships among total polyphenols as well as DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities, GABA contents, and acetylcholinestrase (AChE) inhibitory activity. For the results, C. longa L. from Myanmar exhibited the highest contents of curcumin (97.1 ${\mu}g/mg$), total polyphenols (98.4 ${\mu}g/mg$), and GABA (1.31 ${\mu}g/mg$), as well as the strongest radical scavenging activities and AChE inhibitory activity. In addition, C. aromatica Salisb from India, which had the highest total polyphenol content (98.4 ${\mu}g/mg$) and strongest radical scavenging activities, exhibited relatively high AChE inhibitory activity similar to that of C. longa L. from Myanmar. On the other hand, Z. officinale Rosc. and C. longa L. from Korea showed low contents of curcumin (12.2 ${\mu}g/mg$) and polyphenols (85.7 ${\mu}g/mg$), as well as low AChE inhibitory activities. However, we could detect 1.11 ${\mu}g/mg$ of GABA in these extracts, which was similar to that of C. longa L. from Myanmar. Therefore, GABA content was not correlated with AChE inhibitory activity. Based on the results, AChE inhibitory activity is highly correlated with polyphenol contents in Zingibearceae family. Overall, among the Zingiberaceae tested, C. longa L. from Myanmar might be a strong candidate as a cognitive-enhancing ingredient.

Antibacterial Activity of Curcuma longa against Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus

  • Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has been emerging worldwide as one of the most important hospital and community pathogens. Therefore, new agents are needed to treat the MRSA. In the present study, we investigated antimicrobial activity of ethyl acetate, methanol, and water extracts of Curcuma longa L. (C. longa) aganist clinical isolates of MRSA. The ethyl acetate extract of C. long a demonstrated a higher antibacterial activity than the methanol extract or water extract. Since the ethyl acetate extract was more active than other extracts, we examined whether ethyl acetate extract may restore the antibacterial activity of β-lactams and alter the adhesion and invasion of MRSA to human mucosal fibroblasts (HMFs). In the checkerboard test, ethyl acetate extract of C. longa markedly lowered the MICs of ampicillin and oxacillin against MRSA. In the bacterial adhesion and invasion assay, MRSA intracellular invasion were notably decreased in the presence of 0.125 - 2 mg/ml of C. longa extract compared to the control group. These results suggest that ethyl acetate extract of C. longa may have antibacterial activity and the potential to restore the effectiveness of β-lactams against MRSA, and inhibit the MRSA adhesion and invasion to HMFs.

Efficacy and Safety of Extract Obtained from Pueraria thunbergiana Bentham and Curcuma longa L. on the Improvement of the Menopausal Symptoms (갈근강황추출물의 갱년기 증상 개선에 대한 유효성 및 안전성 평가)

  • Objectives: This clinical trial is performed to investigate the effect of improving the menopausal symptoms and the safety of extract obtained from Pueraria thunbergiana Bentham and Curcuma longa L. in menopausal women Methods: This study was randomized, double blinded, placebo-controlled clinical trial. 110 women with menopausal symptoms were assigned to treatment group (n=55) and control group (n=55). The results of this study were evaluated through changes in Kupperman Index score, Menopause-specific Quality of Life Questionnaire (MENQOL) score, degree of hot flashes and sweating, Body Mass Index(BMI), laboratory test results including female hormones. Results: In the treatment group compared to before baseline, there was significant difference in the Kupperman Index total score, score of each item in the Kupperman Index, MENQOL total score, hot flush and sweating visual analogue scale (VAS), hot flush score, and hot flush duration at one time. However, there was also a significant change compared to baseline in the control group, there was no significant difference between the treatment group and the control group. There was no significant change in female hormone levels in both group, and there were no adverse events associated with the clinical trial product. Conclusions: This clinical trial showed that extract obtained from Pueraria thunbergiana Bentham and Curcuma longa L. was helpful in improving menopausal symptoms in menopausal women without significant side effects.
