  • Relationships between immigrant mothers' Korean language ability and preschoolers' language development in multi-cultural families were studied with 91 mothers and their children. Language capacity of mothers and children was measured by receptive and expressive vocabulary test, sentence comprehension test and two kinds of reading tests. Results showed that mothers' level of comprehension was relatively low but their reading ability was higher than that of elementary school first-grade Korean students. Comprehension of children in multi-cultural families with non-immigrant counterparts showed a lower level of language ability. Mother's level of expressive vocabulary, receptive vocabulary and reading ability correlated with children's language development. These results indicate a relationship between children's delayed language development in multi-cultural families and mother's low proficiency in Korean language.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop the program of traditional living culture for people to sustain viable rural community in Korea. The study was conducted by literature review, survey, interview, and delphi method. The results of this study were as follows; First, the program was developed to response to educational roles and functions. Second, the program was developed to utilize elder people for viable community as programs practitioners. Third, the factors of traditional cultural program for endogenous development were human resources, community organization and community participation, and natural and cultural resources. Forth, the program was developed to view the community resources as a systems because the culture was communicated through relationship rather than heritage. The re-valorization of cultural resources by the programs will provide local people with strategic capacity for endogenous development and for the harnessing of extra-focal forces in a market economy.

  • Although the antioxidant capacity of carotenoids and their role in regulating membrane fluidity have been well studied, their ability to confer resistance to hypoosmotic shock is poorly understood. In this work, we analyzed the effect of a mixture of carotenoid pigments obtained from an Antarctic microorganism belonging to the genus Pedobacter on liposomal resistance to hypoosmotic conditions. Intercalation of pigments into liposomal structures resulted in an improvement of membrane resistance by decreasing the percentage of calcein released in comparison to that by liposomes without pigments. Due to these properties, such pigments could be useful for biotechnological applications.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the structural safety of cultural altar since its bearing capacity has been questioned due to weathering damages and sectional defections. This evaluation process consists two stages; which the first is field investigation and the second is structural modeling and analysis. Based on field investigation, all of the structural members supporting the altar were carefully examined and all the findings were accounted for the development of the structural modeling using the Midas computer program. Using a 3D scanner, the weight of the Buddha statue was applied to the structural modeling. Then, according to the allowable stress design method of KBC2016, the structural safety was evaluated. Based on this result, replacements of several structural members were recommended to increase the structural safety and value of cultural property.

  • The concept of community capacity is regarded as the ability of people and communities to do works associated with the determinant factors and indicators of the circumstances of socio-economic, environmental and physical contexts. Building capacity of communities to effectively analyze our problematic issues and planning of community development is often required to scrutinize current status of community of socio-economic and infrastructural capacity development with GIS. We consider community development as a planned effort to build assets that increase the capacity of communities. Spatial asset mapping is the process enabling to identify and make inventories of tangible and intangible assets. This mapping requires developing a capacity inventory that collects individual organizational and community capacities in view of human, socio-cultural, natural, financial, digital, and physical capacity. The purpose of this research is not only designed to suggest a new concept capacity building, but also proposes a more creative framework of asset-based community cap linking to parcel-based spatial asset mapping and capacity mapping process.

  • The buildings of architectural and cultural heritage are mostly built with stone or brick wall elements, which are connected using limestone or limestone cement mortar, without a full knowledge of the mechanical properties of masonry structures. The compatibility of heritage masonry buildings with valid technical specifications and the rules for earthquake resistance implies the need for construction work such as repairs, strengthening or reconstruction. By strengthening the masonry buildings, ductility and bearing capacity are increased to a level, which, in the case of the earthquake design, allows for some damage to happen, however the structure retains sufficient usability and bearing capacity without the possibility of collapse. Comparison between traditional and modern techniques for seismic strengthening of masonry buildings is given according to their effects, benefits and disadvantages. Recent Croatian provisions provided for heritage buildings enabling deviation of technical specifications are discussed.

  • This study aims to find out the key factors that could influence on regional development strategy to use cultural resources. The methods employed are Meta-analysis with 61 case studies in order to draw related factors and Analytic Hierarchy Process with 68 experts in order to analyze the relative importance of important factors. The main findings are as follows: 26 critical factors are drawn from the case studies and they could be classified into four categories, named as 'the capacity building to excavate and utilize cultural resources which are having potential power', 'the establishment of institutional basis for making projects good progress', 'the boosting of internal capability of locals in the process of project', and 'the preparation of cultural governance and multidirectional networking strategies among persons concerned or stakeholder'. The analysis of relative importance of factors shows that among others, 'the capacity building to excavate and utilize cultural resources which are having potential power' is the most fundamental factors to achieve policy goals. There are few studies that have drawn factors from multi-case studies. In this respect, it is far from being complete but meaningful to a little more enhance the generalization of research findings.
