  • This study seeks to the morphological changes in the oxide skin of the Al-10wt.%si alloy melts. These changes depend on the oxidation time and the temperature of the molten alloy, as well as the effects of adding Mg, Cu and Ni. Thess affects observed by X-ray diffractometer(XRD) and scanning electron microscope(SEM)' Very litte oxide skins on Al-10wtwt.%Si alloy melts can be detected by XRD because it is less than the measuring capabillity of the XRD, or the formation of noncrystalline oxide skins oxide skins canbe deteced by SEM. The addition of 1%Mg and 1%Cu-1%Mg-2.5%Ni to this base alloy crystallized the structure of the oxide skins and increased the oxidation in proportion to the length of time, but adding 3% had hardiy anyaffect at all on the crystal structure of the oxide skins.

  • The specimens used were Ag-25 Pd-15 Cu ternary alloy and Au addition alloy. These alloys were melted and casted by induction electric furnace and centrifugal casting machine in Ar atmosphere. These specimens were solution treated for 2hr at $800^{\circ}C$ and were then quenched into iced water, and aged at $350{\sim}550^{\circ}C$ Age- hardening characteristics of the small Au-containing Ag-Pd-Cu dental alloys were investigated by means of hardness testing. X-ray diffraction and electron microscope observations, electrical resistance, ergy dispersed spectra and electron probe microanalysis. Principal results are as follows : Hardening occured in two stages, i.e., stage I in low temperature and stage II in high temperature regions, during continuous aging. The case of hardening in stage I was due to the formation of the $L1_0$ type face-centered tetragonal PdCu-ordered phase in the grain interior and hardening in stage I was affected by the Cu concentration. In stage II, decomposition of the ${\alpha}$ solid solution to a PdCu ordered phase($L1_0$ type) and an Ag-rich ${\alpha}2$ phase occurred and a discontinuous precipitation occurred at the grain boundary. From the electron microscope study, it was conclued that the cause of age-hardening in this alloy is the precipitation of the PdCu ordered phase, which has AuCu I type face-centered tetragonal structure. Precipetation procedure was ${\alpha}{\to}{\alpha}+{\alpha}_2+PdCu {\to}{\alpha}_1+{\alpha}_2+PdCu$ at Pd/Cu = 1.7 Ag-Pd-Cu alloy is more effective dental alloy as ageing treatment and is suitable to isothermal ageing at $450^{\circ}C$.

  • In this study, the properties of Zr-14Cu-7.5Ni-2.6Al wide ribbon with amorphous structure and properties were analyzed using Hall effect, SEM-EDX, and XRD. Made by melt spinning method, this Zr-14Cu-7.5Ni-2.6Al based alloy ribbon is not more than 96 ㎛ thick and 100 mm wide. This amorphous alloy exhibited tensile strength of 1,641 MPa, yield strength of 1,541 MPa, elongation of 1% and elastic modulus of 98GPa. The bulk concentration, resistivity, and mobility values are midway between general heavy doping ceramics and metals, and they are about 100 times weaker than ordinary metals, so they are close to Si and have good electrical conductivity. In addition, folding tests were conducted at extreme temperatures, withstanding 150,000 times at -20℃, 300,000 times at 24℃, and 150,000 times at 60℃, with no folding defects observed. These results demonstrate the excellent durability and reliability of the Zr-14Cu-7.5Ni-2.6Al wide ribbon alloy and suggest the possibility of developing electronic products using this alloy.

  • CuNi alloy films are deposited by co-sputtering of dual targets (Cu and Ni, respectively). Effects of the co-sputtering conditions, such as powers applied to the targets, deposition pressures, and substrate temperatures, on the structural and electrical properties of deposited films are systematically investigated. The composition ratio of Ni/Cu is almost linearly decreased by increasing the DC power applied to the Cu target from 25.6 W to 69.7 W with the RF power applied to the Ni target unchanged(140 W). it is noted that the chamber pressure during deposition and the film thickness give rise to a change of the Ni/Cu ratio within the films deposited. The former may be due to a higher sputtering yield of Cu atom and the latter due to the re-sputtering phenomenon of Cu atoms on the surface of deposited film. The film deposited at higher pressures or at lower substrate temperatures have a smaller crystallite size, a higher electrical resistivity, and much more voids. This may be attributed to a lower surface mobility of sputtered atoms over the substrate.

  • This paper reports the results of an investigation into the effect of Cu additions upon the nano-crystallization behaviour of an Al-Y-Ni alloy. 1 at.% Cu was added to a base alloy of Al/sub 88/Y₄Ni/sub 8/ either by substitution for Al to form Al/sub 87/Y₄Ni/sub 8/Cu₁, or by substitution for Ni to form Al/sub 88/Y₄Ni/sub 7/Cu₁. Consistent with previous findings in the literature, the substitution of Cu for Al was found to increase the thermal stability of the amorphous phase whereas the substitution of Cu for Ni was found to decrease its thermal stability. Comparing the microstructures of these alloys after heat treatment to produce equivalent volume fractions of Al nanocrystals showed average grain sizes of 14 nm, 12 nm and 9 nm for the alloys Al/sub 88/Y₄Ni/sub 8/, Al/sub 87/Y₄Ni/sub 8/Cu₁respectively. The effect of Cu in refining the size of the nanocrystals was attributed to enhanced nucleation increasing the number density of the nanocrystals, rather than diffusion limited or interface limited growth.

  • The effect of electroless Ni and Cu plating on $LaNi_5$, $AB_5$ type hydrogen storage alloy was investigated by the various electrochemical techniques such as constant current charge-discharge test, cyclic voltammeoy, and a.c. impedance spectroscopy. Scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction test were conducted for phenomenological logical analyses. Cyclic Voltammetry results show that activation characteristics, cycle life and reaction ,rate were improved through electroless Ni and Cu plating. Compared with bare $LaNi_5$ the charge transfer resistance of electrode was greatly reduced as charge-discharge cycle increases. Therefore, electroless Ni and Cu plating on $LaNi_5$ alloy tends to accelerate the early activation, increasing the cyclic lift of electrode.

  • Freeze drying of a porous Cu-Sn alloy with unidirectionally aligned pore channels was accomplished by using a composite powder of CuO-$SnO_2$ and camphene. Camphene slurries with CuO-$SnO_2$ content of 3, 5 and 10 vol% were prepared by mixing with a small amount of dispersant at $50^{\circ}C$. Freezing of a slurry was done at $-25^{\circ}C$ while the growth direction of the camphene was unidirectionally controlled. Pores were generated subsequently by sublimation of the camphene during drying in air for 48 h. The green bodies were hydrogen-reduced at $650^{\circ}C$ and then were sintered at $650^{\circ}C$ and $750^{\circ}C$ for 1 h. XRD analysis revealed that the CuO-$SnO_2$ powder was completely converted to Cu-Sn alloy without any reaction phases. The sintered samples showed large pores with an average size of above $100{\mu}m$ which were aligned parallel to the camphene growth direction. Also, the internal walls of the large pores had relatively small pores. The size of the large pores decreased with increasing CuO-$SnO_2$ content due to the change of the degree of powder rearrangement in the slurry. The size of the small pores decreased with increase of the sintering temperature from $650^{\circ}C$ to $750^{\circ}C$, while that of the large pores was unchanged. These results suggest that a porous alloy body with aligned large pores can be fabricated by a freeze-drying and hydrogen reduction process using oxide powders.

  • Joint properties of vehicle ECU (Electric Control Unit) module which was manufactured by using Sn-Cu-Cr-Ca alloy were investigated. A new solder which has a middle melting temperature about $231^{\circ}C$ was fabricated as the type of 300um solder ball and paste type. The prototype modules were made by reflow process and measured spreadability, wettability shear strength and estimated interface reaction. The spreadability of the alloy was about 84% from the measurement of contact angle of the solder ball and the wetting force was measured 2mN. The average shear strength of the module which was manufactured by using the solder paste, was 1.9 $kg/mm^2$. Also, the thickness of IMC(intermetallic compound) was evaluated with various aging temperature and time in order to understand Cr effect on Sn-0.7Cu solder. $Cu_6Sn_5$ IMC was formed between Cu pad and the solder alloy and the average thickness of the $Cu_6Sn_5$ IMC was measured about 4um and it was about 50% of thickness of $Cu_6Sn_5$ IMC in Sn-0.7Cu. It is expected to have a positive effect on reliability of the solder joint.

  • The dynamic magnetostriction characteristics of an Fe-based nanocrystalline FeCuNbSiB alloy are investigated as a function of the dc bias magnetic field. The experimental results show that the piezomagnetic coefficient of FeCuNbSiB is about 2.1 times higher than that of Terfenol-D at the low dc magnetic bias $H_{dc}$ = 46 Oe. Moreover, FeCuNbSiB has a large resonant dynamic strain coefficient at quite low Hdc due to a high mechanical quality factor, which is 3-5 times greater than that of Terfenol-D at the same low $H_{dc}$. Based on such magnetostriction characteristics, we fabricate a new type of transducer with FeCuNbSiB/PZT-8/FeCuNbSiB. Its maximum resonant magnetoelectric voltage coefficient achieves ~10 V/Oe. The ME output power reaches 331.8 ${\mu}W$ at an optimum load resistance of 7 $k{\Omega}$ under 0.4 Oe ac magnetic field, which is 50 times higher than that of the previous ultrasonic-horn-substrate composite transducer and it decreases the size by nearly 86%. The performance indicate that the FeCuNbSiB/PZT-8/FeCuNbSiB transducer is promising for application in highly efficient magnetoelectric energy conversion.
